Hi - My question is regarding cabinet scribing. When installing cabinets and finding the walls not to be straight, I take the cabinet back out to the shop and make modification to the sides to get it to fit the wall. At the age of 66, this is not something I want to be doing. I've haven't tried this but couldn't I just take a similar size piece of 1/4" hard board or plywood( height and depth) and scribe that first and then transfer that to the cabinet? Thus eliminating any trips back to the shop with the cabinet. I guess if the floor has a some peaks and valleys this could come into play but let's just say that's not the case in this scenario. Thank you

Found this at harbor freight for 5.00( I'm almost embarrassed to say that). Veritas wanted 129.00 for their scribe. Sometimes it's the little things that make you happy.

There was a time when you needed a tool, you just had to make it yourself. Last week I had a gentleman stop and look at some of my hand tools at First Friday. He was telling me about a few wooden tools he had. I ran into him at the auction on Saturday night and he said I have something to show you. A trip to his vehicle and he produced these three very nice hand made wooden tools. He said they had hung in his fathers shop for as long as he could remember and when he passed away he took them down and brought them home. He offered them to me, he wanted them to go to someone who would appreciate them and keep them, not just sell them. WOW! There is a Wooden Scribe, a Wooden vise and A Wooden Caliper. The scribe. It is scribed with measurements. And the back side. Then the wooden vise The wooden caliper. His father was a carpenter/woodworker and probably made these in the early 1900's. So excited to add them to the collection and really cool to have some history to go along.

I like to carry my scribe in a pocket for easy access, but a sharp metal pointy thing in your pocket can also cause pain and bloodshed! Solution...grab a retractable ball-point pen and fit it with a scriber "refill". An appropriate length of drill rod sharpened to a point and tapered as needed to resemble the original ink cartridge...a ring of solder to hold the spring and presto! A retractable scribe that is safe to carry in a shirt pocket!
