Some epoxys will work with a second pour and blend so that it is not possible to tell it was added to.

today was epoxy day. mixed up a nice batch of epoxy and turquoise dust (8 oz of each A and B, 2 oz of dust, seemed to be a good ratio). stirred that very well for a few min, and then filled in 13 hole/knots from the underside. top side was taped off with clear packing tape. a few of the holes were very small, 1/4" or so, so i used a syringe to inject some epoxy to make sure they got filled up nicely.

takes at least 24 hours to cure up, i'll give it 48. the excess on the underside can be sanded off, and any leakage on the top side can also be sanded off. gonna look cool. then have to make the apron boards before making the legs, and at some point, stain and poly (golden oak and flat/matte poly).

had some excess epoxy, so poured that into a rectangular container, might try to make something out of it later. belt buckle?

after about 18 hours, i checked the epoxy pour this morning, many had leakage over night, so made up a second batch of epoxy and turquoise dust to fill in the voids, will let that cure until sunday and then check it and reveal things. this is the slow part. routing the edges is the fast part.

This is coming along nicely.

yet more sanding today, and some routing of the edges and corners. had one hiccup near one corner, had to do some aggressive sanding to get rid of a splinter. if you look closely, it doesn't match everything else.....so don't look closely. duh. it's "rustic", give me a little leeway.

little preview, this is the underside stained (golden oak on white oak).

need to make the aprons and legs next, get them stained and attached, and then flip the mess over and stain the top side (after a little more sanding).

like eating an elephant, one bite at a time, and eventually you are all done.

Do you have a plan for moving that it's final resting place????

yup.

attaching the aprons won't make it much heavier, so i'll do that in the shop.

the legs, L shaped, will attach to the outside of the aprons, with double headed hex bolts (4 per corner, staggered) holding the legs to the apron. i'll number them, so the holes line up later. then i'll have the guy who is getting this help me load into my truck, drive it over, carry inside, and assemble in the room it's going in. if they ever move, just reverse the process. still thinking how to include the hex wrenches under the table somewhere/somehow, so they are always available.

you can't just wing things, you have to spend time, while falling asleep, solving these problems before they become problems. i can turn it over by myself, but it's too big to carry to the truck.

Maybe a small block attached to the underside with holes drilled horizontally so the wrenches are a snug fit. Then maybe put a rare earth magnet in the end to give them a little more hold.

With what you've already done, this part is a piece of cake. Or a donut. Whichever you prefer!😁

That is gonna be lovely. Can't wait to see the rest.

Beautiful.

Great choice on the stain, it's going to make the grain really pop👍

she sent me a pic of another table with the color she liked, so i looked at my stash of stains, did a quick test on a scrap, sent a pic, got approval. got a fresh can of Golden Oak, i'm not sure how old the old can was.

Remember, there are triplets so however the wrenches are stored, they will be accessed!! 😉

today got the apron made and glued up.

let it cure overnight, then stain and pocket holes (to attached to the top, using fine thread screws).

did a quick test of the screws i have, they work fine in this hard oak.

you are probably thinking, "man, this project is moving so slowly....will it ever get done?"

hang in there, good things come to those who wait. i work as fast and as long as I want, not someone else's idea of progress. have other things that command my time too some days.

Change 1:

Instead of a block, how about a small box screwed to the bottom of the table? Still have the wrenches handy but little fingers won't be able to access them. Barbara has a good point. Rugrats get into EVERYTHING! I know this from personal experience. Being a former rugrat myself.
