June 2Jun 2 Author Popular Post first coat of finish on the top side. added a few more little spots of turquoise yesterday, mixed a paste of dust and poly, then scraped it into small cracks and holes. ended up with 34 total areas with turquoise accents. a sampling:
June 3Jun 3 I like the look of that!I work with pine a lot. It's perfect for that kind of thing. I will need to try that at some point.
June 6Jun 6 Author Popular Post got the table delivered and assembled yesterday, they love it. next: pair of matching benches. final dimensions, 91-1/2" long, 40" wide, 30" tall.there is 81-1/2" between legs on the sides, so i'll shoot for making the benches about 77-1/2" long, so you can tuck them under without too much banging of the legs.

Related to chair making - I just met Russ Filbeck at the Grizzly event in Springfield MO. He had his ladder back chairs there - would love to take one of his classes on chair making. I did buy his book so I can read up on the history and how-to. Was great to speak with him and also had a hands on opportunity to work on a shaker box and try one of his spokeshaves.

June 6Jun 6 Author Popular Post we figured you can easily seat 10 large adults (4 each side, 1 each end), and if they are more slight in build, and you have 4 chairs, then up to 14 adults (5 each side, 2 each end). and if you are talking wiggly kids, then 18 or more easily. imagine the clean up bill!! 18 little kids for a birthday party, cake and ice cream everywhere!! what fun!
June 7Jun 7 Clean up heck I am thinking about the grocery bill. Great build am awaiting the bench build. Will need some long timbers.
Thursday at 07:35 PM3 days Author Popular Post and today we start on the benches. selected the lumber, rough cut to 80" long (final will be 77"), got the edges squared up and mostly straight, planed down both sides (29/32" final thickness), and got the tops gluing up. wider than final width, plan to trim to 14" wide/deep. and now i can watch some soccer.....

Red oak?yes, all red oak.got the clamps off, scraped off excess glue, trimmed to final length and width, initial sanding at 80 done. need to chamfer corners and edges, and then more sanding at 120. ugh.also need to make the aprons.
Friday at 08:47 PM2 days Author the order of the boards was mostly determined by which ones fit well with others. trying to grain match was secondary.
Saturday at 04:39 PM1 day Author Popular Post first apron gluing up, do the other after lunch.the table apron is 3" deep, the bench apron is 4-1/2", little more strength, as i expect heavy loads on the bench over its life.
