steven newman Posted September 6 Author Report Posted September 6 Top was trimmed last night... Leaves a nice edge to layout and cut the Dovetail "Tails" As for that bit... Seems I stuck it here, so as not to get lost, again... Yard sales to raid, this morning...will see what this afternoon brings.. Stay tuned.... lew, Gunny, Grandpadave52 and 1 other 4 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted September 8 Author Popular Post Report Posted September 8 Ok..reason for that router and dovetail bit.. Is to cut/mill sockets for this joint.... I mark out where the socket needs to be, and how long...then set the router to where the router bit sits right there, matching the area I need milled out...then, measure and mark where the edge of the router base ends..mark a square line across the panel....clamp the guide fence ( aka Rip Fence) in place...run the router along the guide fence until I hit the "STOP!" line... 5 webframes = 5 sockets to be milled ...to do the last one.. I had to turn theguide fence 180 degrees.. 5 done...set the other side panel on top of this one, and this one was about 1/8" too wide...so. trimmed that off, and set it on top of the freshly routed panel.. So that once the bench gets freed up, I can set this clamped up stack into the vise, and transfer all the marking to cut the pins to... Bench is rather tied up, just now... The 2 scrap 1 x3s? are to be clamped to the Top Panel...both the strengthen the panel and to guard the baselines, as I usually abuse them.. Might need 2 saws? This one is a bit easier on my hands...but, places like that Half Tail... This little flush cut saw seems to work...tried to get the tails all sawn..but.. Right about here...my "Get up & Go"...got up and went...Busy weekend? Stay tuned....I just MIGHT be IN the Shop on a MONDAY? Gerald, lew, Fred W. Hargis Jr and 2 others 5 Quote
steven newman Posted September 10 Author Report Posted September 10 Monday, Monday...no errands to run...so... Tails were sawn, using a better saw.. Bishop No. 10. Comes with very fine cross cut teeth and Very course RIP teeth..all depends on how you set up the saw... Chop halfway down.. Leave a bit out on the edge...then flip over... And complete the chops...all the while just sitting down on the job.. Next task..a rebate along the back edge to house the Plywood back panel, or, is it to hide the plywood../ Breaktime! Almost every pass, I was hearing a clicking sound... Ooops...will glue that back into place during assembly work...Set this over on the tablesaw, after making a big mess.. Next task...involved transferring Lines...from one Pin Board to the other.. Took the bevel gauge and marked out....panels were lined up inside to inside face... Carried the layout lines down to the baseline.....moved the "pattern aside.. A wee bit tight? And then grabbed the saw, again... Again, used 2 scraps to support the piece while Mr Bishop went to work... LONG day in the shop...on a MONDAY? Hmmmm , we'll have to see what Tuesday will be like... Stay tuned.... Popular Post steven newman Posted September 10 Author Popular Post Report Posted September 10 Chop Shop Tuesday? First task of the day...Mill the last 5 sockets, and dry fit things...no glue or screws, yet 1-5/8" screws will be used..and the glue will be going into the sockets... Pins were chopped... Then traced around.. So...Today's Task will be to saw these tails, chop out the waste...and MAYBE see about a little assembly? Stay tuned...cussing while be involved, though....since I have added a touch of Fresh DNA to the project..via the corner of the Witherby chisel...sharp enough that I did not even feel it... Might be a busy day? lew, Gunny, Gerald and 3 others 6 Quote

steven newman Posted September 10 Author Report Posted September 10 (edited) Just think back to what your D.I. would sound like....at Day 0 at the recruit center.... Tails needed sawn... Then made ready to chop.. Then cleaned up.. Then try a dry fit... Could not do a full dry fit, because... I didn't have the frames tapped all the way in... Will try a glue up..tomorrow.... Stay tuned.. Edited September 10 by steven newman lew, Grandpadave52 and Fred W. Hargis Jr 3 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted September 11 Author Popular Post Report Posted September 11 Started off this morning, knocking all the dry fits apart....easier to add the glue, that way.. Frames were stacked up, as I needed to drill a bunch of Pilot holes... Some 20 holes... Drill , bit, and a pine block to sit each frame on, while I drilled...just in case I drill too deep... Easy part, next... Dab of glue on the sliding dovetail stub..and a drop clear at the back...mallet to drive the frame home in the socket..square to align the frame to the side...drive a screw into the pilot hole in the back, follow up with the second hole. Repeat 4 times... Next? The Not So Easy Part.. Repeat for the other side panel. including using a square to line things up... Now, the cussing can commence...dab of glue on every pin...then try to install the top panel onto those pins...one end wasn't too hateful...the other end wanted to put up a fight.....Hmmmmm, NOT today....between the clamps and cauls, and a 3 Pound "helper" the tails slowly settled onto those pins.. Pipe clamps to close the deal on one side..flip this heavy mess over onto the tablesaw..and clamp the other side down tight.. This will be the "Front" of the case...the back? The Cauls are 1 x 4s Checked the openings with a blank for the drawer front,,, Then, went back one more time with a square...hmmmm...a hair out? We have ways... Case is NOW square... Will let this sit a day..or 2...then remove the clamps ( GENTLY!) move everything off of my tablesaw, and cut a plywood panel for the back of this thing.. Stay tuned... What I had when I came back upstairs from the shop...Ice Cold one, at that... lew, Fred W. Hargis Jr, Grandpadave52 and 2 others 5 Quote
steven newman Posted September 13 Author Report Posted September 13 Clamps came off yesterday....plan for today? Cut and install the 1/4" Plywood back panel....clean up all the glue joints.....then MAYBE see about getting parts cut for 5 drawers... Stay tuned.. Grandpadave52 and lew 2 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted September 13 Author Popular Post Report Posted September 13 Ok...back panel has been installed, I stopped it right on the bottom webframe...glue & screws... Swung the case around...and worked on the corners a bit...from this mess... To something more like this.. Added Brass corner protectors on the top corners....and, I figured I will need the handles when I try to move this things around...like for doing some work with the High-Tech Sabre saw.. Amazing what a brand new, sharp blade can do... Set the case over on the tablesaw's top...to see how well the feet sit level...2 needed to be beltsanded down a hair or 3...Finally.. Sitting nice and level, and not rocking..PIP? F Front view...debate is to whether to add a "Toe Kick" along the bottom edge..and.. Still need to work on that one lone dovetail...about here, Ser Uncle Charles ( Horse) decided my feet were fair game... slid a blank for one drawer side in place...swept the floor and closed up for the day... Stay tuned.. Grandpadave52, Gunny, Gerald and 2 others 4 1 Quote

Popular Post Gerald Posted September 14 Popular Post Report Posted September 14 Looking good from here. I just had a thought by now you should have replaced all the home furniture. Are you going to open a furniture store? Handfoolery, lew, Fred W. Hargis Jr and 2 others 2 3 Quote
steven newman Posted September 14 Author Report Posted September 14 A "Toe Kick" has been installed.. Nothing real fancy...Have enough Ash to make sides for 3 drawers,,to go with the 5 Ash Drawer Fronts... Chest is sitting where it will call home... Right about where the old Langdon 75 used to sit... That is about it, for today...paying the price for that 3 hour Marathon yesterday in the shop... Stay tuned.. Grandpadave52, Fred W. Hargis Jr, Gerald and 1 other 1 3 Quote
steven newman Posted September 21 Author Report Posted September 21 This is going to take a LOT of catching up....been THAT busy... Drawer Fronts now have dovetails... To match the pins in the drawer sides... Got to the 5th drawer, got it done..got out the groove maker.. 5 drawer fronts, + 10 drawer sides...15 grooves needed ploughed...then things got stashed away... Wh When I go to glue up these 5 drawers, I'll install a square of Rosewood into each of those square holes where the grooves show... Tomorrow, MAYBE....I need to get out the "other" Stanley No. 45.... As it is set up to plough Dados...I also made sure that the grooves all lined up... yep...15 grooves, means a LOT of this stuff on the floor.. Depending on the grain in the wood...and sometimes I have to go against the grain ( SHARP cutter works nicely) I not only get those nice long stringy things, I also get... Handfuls of these little "Chippies"... Stay tuned... lew, Handfoolery, Grandpadave52 and 1 other 4 Quote
steven newman Posted September 21 Author Report Posted September 21 Doing a bit of work, today...will involve this.. Stay tuned... Grandpadave52, Gunny and lew 3 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted September 21 Author Popular Post Report Posted September 21 Open the case... Turns out, this had been sitting in here a bit too long..so.. Rust on the rods..cleaned this all up...tried to find the exact match for the 1 x 4 pine boards that will be the back of the drawers... Cutter is 3/4" wide...would rather it be a be loose, than too tight a fit...need to build a jig to hold things steady enough.. 2 pine slats for the slip-ways..guides...another to clamp down on a wedge..dovetail saw to deepen where the spurs went...to prevent any blow outs..Screw hole? is one of 2 each side gets...as not only glue will hold the backs in place, but so will a pair of 3/4" screws at each joint. I had to adjust the depth of cut a bit....I want the spurs to be deeper than the cutter...and NOT try to hog out the waste....I also sharpened the cutter...seems a prior owner decided to hollow grind the edge as a way to "sharpen it" I just prefer a simple, flat bevel.. Finally.. A dado shows up...one of 2 so far, today... As for the Stanley #45s.. One in front is a type 5, that I keep set up for cross grain jobs ( like a dado) while the Type 20 behind it is set up for going with the grain ( spurs no longer work) So..Maybe I'll head back to the shop after awhile...and try to do a few more dados? Stay tuned Handfoolery, Gunny, lew and 2 others 4 1 Quote
