Popular Post steven newman Posted August 27 Popular Post Report Posted August 27 Decided to clear off a spot...donated an un-used MitreBox and saw...that was just sitting around and getting rusty.... Had 2 to send over to the Lutheran's Thrift Store...the area back there in the red circle...needed cleaned off.... Thing with a motor? A Wen Power Planer..about the size of a Stanley #5 Jack plane, and 3 times the weight... Had a stash of Ash planks I was going through, cutting out the bad areas....I sorted through the stacks...found enough to lay out... Imagine the ones laying flat as Drawer Fronts, and the ones standing up on edge as the dividers between the drawers...this gave me a measurement as to how TALL a case I needed to build...20"...then from there, I got a depth of 16" and a width of 24"...roughly... Next, find enough parts that were long enough to make a panel for the top, and 2 panels for the sides.. Cross cut a few for length...and laid out for the top panel.. left stick needed ripped down a bit(Didn't feel like lowering the saw blade just yet) Ripped that extra off, along with the defects along the outside edge...rearrange a few boards...some needed to be jointed.. We have ways... worked my way through, until.. Last edge...then set up for a glue up..(lowered the saw blade, this time) Spread a bead of glue along one edge, rub that edge against the next edge..repeat as needed...1 clamp on top, 2 clamps underneath..let this heavy mess sit a spell... Sorted out enough boards for one of the 20" long/tall sides... These will need cross cut, and the one on top need ripped down a bunch...then repeat for the other side panel... Same here, these need cross cut for length, jointed and maybe one ripped for width.. Plan at the moment...top corners will get through dovetails...and maybe a slight round over...Bottom divider, will be the "bottom" of the case...and sit in a rebate...may add feet of some sort. Maple runners for the drawers to slide on, front "dividers" out of Ash...both the runners and the dividers ( other than the bottom) will be in sliding dovetails...back of case is to be 1/4" plywood, glued and screwed into a rebate along the sides and the underside of the top... Then, build 5 drawers.. Should be fun, stay tuned... Handfoolery, Gunny, HARO50 and 8 others 11 Quote

Popular Post steven newman Posted August 31 Author Popular Post Report Posted August 31 Last of the 3 panels was worked on, today... One face was flattened, then flip the panel over, and.. Flatten the other face... Then, lay the other Side Panel down on top of this side panel, and see IF they match.. Not quite...they do need to amtch each other, as that makes the drawers work a bit better... Ends needed trimmed and cut square.. This end just needed buzzed off square...we have ways.. High-Tech Saw Guide? Will try to do a bit of lay out work tomorrow, after the Boss has run all her errands... Stay tuned.. Grandpadave52, Gunny, Gerald and 5 others 8 Quote

Popular Post steven newman Posted September 2 Author Popular Post Report Posted September 2 Some ripping and cross cutting last night..got bored...needed to find 5 blanks that will be drawer fronts...and cut the one end of each square, and the other 4 ends to match the shortest of the 5... Tried to find enough lumber for 5 drawer dividers...came up 1 short. And 10 drawer runners out of Pine... Drawer fronts are still a bit rough...so.. Gave this plane a bit of work... No longer rough as John Wayne paper...almost glass smooth...will work on the other 4 later, today.. Not happy with the 4 drawer dividers, as these will show...might stick them either around in back, or, use them as feet for the case...have a 8/4 by 6' I can resaw down, to make better ones..need to haul that to the shop... Stay tuned.. Headhunter, HARO50, Harry Brink and 2 others 5 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted September 2 Author Popular Post Report Posted September 2 BTW: both side panels were trimmed and flattened.. face #1, and.. Face #2, test for a match between the 2 sides.. Bottom one needed a trim...finally.. All trimmed up Stay tuned.. Grandpadave52, Fred W. Hargis Jr, Headhunter and 3 others 6 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted September 2 Author Popular Post Report Posted September 2 About 2 hours in the shop, today... Needed to get both side panels squared up to where they matched each other.. I think THAT will do...then a bit of layout work. . Laid out where the webframes will go, according to the drawer fronts. I also hauled a plank or 2 to the shop...as I needed to mill 5 Divider rails...so.. Below that one red line.. This end had too many issues going on. I also ripped a couple 1 x 4 x 6' planks to get the 5 rails for the back of the webframes... With the usual suspects being rejected.. Knotty.... Once I figured out how long to make the drawer runners, I could trim them for overall length and then for the tenons.. One done, 9 to go...lots of nibbles going on..then reset to mill the groove that the tenons will get glued into.. 10 grooves, at 2 passes per groove...these are 3/4" deep The front rails need a dovetail tail milled on each end...the back rails need trimmed for length..as for the 5 drawer fronts They will need a wee bit of work.. mainly with that hand plane, as they seem to be a bit...rough... We have ways... Stay tuned..webframe 101 coming up later.. HARO50, Grandpadave52, frenchwwr and 5 others 7 1 Quote

Popular Post steven newman Posted September 2 Author Popular Post Report Posted September 2 Router table test....had to drag the durn thing out, and clean it off... Wrenches to change out the straight bit.. yes, it takes 2 wrenches...1/2" dovetail bit installed.. 1st jig was a tad awkward to push along..I also buried the bit half way into the fence...second jig was a little bit better.. I'd forgot how LOUD this dang thing is...view of the tail.. That is all I need, as the groove was removed by the router bit Only 8 more to do...TOMORROW...I am too pooped to work any more, tonight... Stay tuned.. lew, HARO50, Headhunter and 4 others 7 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted September 4 Author Popular Post Report Posted September 4 Had to add a backer board.. As for webframes..this was a dry fit... After I had trimmed the back rail a bit.. Once all the dovetail "Tails" were done...moved things around and set up an assembly table...glue clamps and brads... Checking for square,, 2 brads per glue joint..diagonal clamp was for one frame that NEEDED pulled into square... Got all 5 webframes done...couple wanted to warp, so.. I clamped them all up into a book...let these sit a day or 2... Stay tuned.. lew, Gunny, Grandpadave52 and 5 others 8 Quote

Popular Post steven newman Posted September 5 Author Popular Post Report Posted September 5 Moved that book off of the tablesaw...had layout work to do.. Panels are sitting front to front....inside surface facing up. Framer Square to carry lines across to panel #2 This is where dovetail sockets will be going...out on the back edges will be a rebate.. To house the 1/4" plywood back panel. Rebates( Rabbets)..means I need to dig out the case that plane was in...and get out the fence and install it... Craftsman No. 3720 ( Sargent & Co. No. 79, type 2) Set one side panel into the leg vise.. Panel is also sitting on the bench's shelf. with a c clamp on the far end 1st panel, did not need the clamp..I also place a scrap under the panels to level them up a bit... That pile is about half of what came from one rebate (other half was already on the floor) Took a while....second panel turned out that I was going against the grain...sharp iron, and a rub with a candle helped out... Rebates for the back panel are now done... Next episode? Dovetails ! Stay tuned... HARO50, Gerald, Harry Brink and 3 others 6 Quote

Popular Post steven newman Posted September 6 Author Popular Post Report Posted September 6 (edited) Well, I thought I could just lay out some things.. Except...the rebate was facing the wrong way? I even made a couple cuts.. The more I thought about it...and looked right at it... I had these bass-ackwards....so...I reset the entire line, worked around the NOW bad saw cuts...even cut a template out of pine to make sure I had this set the correct direction..the set up a place to chop the correct waste... This being the outside/show face... Chop half way down, at the baseline...leave a tab out on the edge for support..flip this over.. Chop from the inside face out..pins are now done. correctly The Chisel? A 1/2" wide Witherby.... Seemed to hold up quite well.. This morning, needed 1 task completed... I needed to put 2 sides and 2 webframes together...then set the Top panel against the bottom edge of the 2 sides...and mark how much I'll need to trim off the Top Panel.. About that much. Once trimmed, I can start cutting the "Tail Board" into the ends of the Top panel... Trying to fight those 4 parts AND clamp them so that they will stay put...with just 2 hands and clamps a bit of a stretch to get to...Cussing was indeed involved... Stay tuned..need to track down the dovetail bit, so that I can mill the sockets into the side panels... Edited September 6 by steven newman Gerald, HARO50, Gunny and 5 others 8 Quote
