Wood Joint #14....Box Joint

Prep 2 blanks

WoodJointClass14startup.jpg.98fbd0342c257413fa0b5eb61b3dbd37.jpg

Try a layout...using a chisel for the finger spacing..

WoodJointClass14firstlayout.jpg.3885b59f9d987d86086e7de794f0e2b9.jpg

Then adjust to blend thing in better...and run the Backsaw...

Next, set up a way and place to do some chopping..

WoodJointClass14halfwaychop.jpg.30119aa4a38ad9e9292b6eadfdd8d00b.jpg

Choose the best looking face...chop half way down, leave a support "porch"  Flip the blank over..

WoodJointClass14choppingchisel.jpg.9a87edd23b2890a28dca7de70113aa76.jpg

And finish chopping out the waste...an 1/8" thick layer at a time...

Once this blank is done, trace around the fingers onto the other blank..finish the layout, saw the lines on the waste side...then, chop out the waste...

Dry fit?

Not too hateful?   Check for square?

WoodJointClass14checkedforsquare.jpg.1c959d39594d6b8ff759a810c6ddfd80.jpg

Seems to be square?   Grade?   Thinking maybe a "B+" ?

And that concludes the Wood Joint Class Exam...

Unless anyone can think of any other joints a Freshman in High School should know how to do...

Next up?  Well..

These 15 Ash Planks are now sitting in my house, getting used to the place...after spending 10+ years in a barn...Price?  $25....

4/4 x 6"   average length is 5'

Have the Single Brain Cell Sketch Up working on a plan of some sort...we'll see...

Thanks for looking in!

By request...

So, a simple miter joint is fairly easy to cut..and there are all sorts of ways to glue it up...

JoineryClsssplinedmiterstarthere.jpg.25fee01e710cf99d3c18af60b338e2c5.jpg

Going to take these 2 pieces, and kick things up a notch....

Do a wee bit of layout work..

JoineryClasssplinedmiterlayoutlines.jpg.5759b543c87b4a1baaca8cda4facfd4f.jpg

Looking for a 1/2" tenon to fit into a groove...then the saws come out..

JoineryClasssplinedmiterdoabitofsawwork.jpg.489ff0d6e165cf28ac510166b8598622.jpg

Now..this can either be a 1/4" wide tongue, or a 1/4" wide groove..depends on which side of the lines you cut on..kind of helps IF you start with the tongue first..then lay out for the matching groove..

They should come out looking like this..

JoineryClasssplinedmiterreadytoassemble.jpg.9b05c12add1ebf715c3b201f2d21e264.jpg

Hardest part was chopping end grain Pine...to make the groove..so..dry fit?

JoineryClasssplinedmiterdryfit.jpg.233fe91a645c94fef4c06fc30d74b1dc.jpg

There will be a little wedge sticking out of the top of the corner, that needs to be trimmed flush...

Not too bad?

Excellent! Grade- A

Ok..back to that table build....:ChinScratch:

How many remember that first day at the Reception Center, Recruit training center....day 1?  :SaluteandRun:

Well...there was the same level of cussing going on in my shop, this morning:ArguingSmileys:

A few simple tasks needed to be done.  Such as rotating the table so I can work on the table's top..Way too many overhead items in the way...finally done, without ripping things down..:BangingHead:

Next task, was to adjust the depth of the router's cut....after a LOT of fussing and fighting and CUSSING:ArguingSmileys:

Was able to try to mill a cove around the edge of the table's top....even though the table was trying it's best to run away, the cord for the router trying to do a Tangle Foot impression...wound up with this..:JawDrop:SofaTableSandFinishcovedetails.jpg.393b0560e7165cd0f68b95bab315030d.jpg

And only one burn mark?  Next task?  Well since the table is sitting like this...

SofaTableSandFinishreadytosand.jpg.64d4fdbf48aae33da1330f6747023731.jpg

I got to thinking I could TRY to sand the top nice and smooth..:ChinScratch:

Got out the ROS and a few sander discs..80 grit and 220 grit...and give the entire top, burn mark and all a good sanding:Cheer:

Of course, the cord was still try the Tangle Foot stunts:ArguingSmileys:

Last time I used the Witch's Brew..it was a bit on the RED side...so..gave the "Mix" a few shots of a Dark Walnut stain...and stirred things up...and, of course, all the brushes were still upstairs..:BangingHead:

Brushed on a coat of the Brew..:Cheer:

SofaTableSandFinishbrushedon.jpg.d668163eabf032cbbf0aac1e53dd56f1.jpg

Then find a clean (not for long) rag, and wipe everything down..

SofaTableSandFinishwipeddown.jpg.36bde3f326733130652d9eba378fe0b1.jpg

Will let this sit a spell...maybe later today, I can flip this over...:ChinScratch:

SofaTableSandFinishlettingitdry.jpg.138259a640120fc223bc472ffd761083.jpg

And work on everything below the top...and work on another sort of "Brew"?:DevilLaughing:

SpoonTray2Lunchtime.JPG.fa538b50e503f00de61b0e102353eca0.JPG

Stay tuned..:cowboy:

Looking beautiful so far.  I'm curious if there is any wiggle of the top/flex in the long slender legs?   When I taught I had my students make 1/4 scale (1/4" - 1") accurate models of their design proposals.  Usually the models would reveal any potential/unforeseen properties if they existed that might suggest minor changes or a complete re-think or their design.

In the case of a behind-the-sofa table though where no dynamic loads would ever hit it I doubt a little wiggle would show up or matter.

The legs will wiggle a bit, while settling down unto an uneven floor...table will find it's own "level"..
