I had gotten some cherry a while back only to discover most of it had "windshake" damage. One of the pieces destined to be a bowl became pretty much fodder for the garbage man. I salvaged one small piece for a little bowl only to have it explode while sanding. So as not to have the efforts be a total loss, I cut what was left to see the profile and how I was doing with wall thickness consistency. 

 

I was using only my fingers as a gauge, except for the bottom, where I use a gauge/jig from Sam Angelo to determine the thickness. I'm pretty happy. The wall thickness could have been a little better at the transition from side to bottom. And maybe a little thinner overall.

Thanks Lew. I just got some elm for when I get back into the shop so watching Raffin's videos and gonna try some of that. As to Raffins discs Long time ago Cptn Eddie did what he called a soft touch. It was a piece threaded in 3/4 to go onto One Way style live center. Then you can shape contact point to what ever you want. A friend of mine was getting rid of a bag full of Rubber Chucky pieces in red and they work really well.

I wasn't aware of windshake before a few weeks ago. There's a tree that was cut down 2-3 years ago (guessing) near my house. I cut out a section and made a bowl. It wasn't until just after I had roughed it in, that I noticed a distinct line in one of the scrap pieces. A very light tap broke it apart.

 

The only thing holding it together is those little nubs. Figured I should check the bowl I just made and, sure enough, it broke right apart. I'm surprised it held together on the lathe. I never did identify that tree species. My best guess is poplar (tulip).

This is the first time I've run across a piece, myself. Unfortunately, almost all of the logs I got were affected. Might be able to make some little hollow pieces from what's left. I doubt there will be many bowls.
