February 14, 20242 yr Popular Post If you haven't gotten that Valentines present, maybe you should dig out a pillow and a couple of blankets for the couch! Our Patriot Turners- @RustyFN posted a beautiful walnut bowl in our continuing thread "OFF The Lathe And Just Finished"- Rusty has another image and a little about the finish in his post. Rusty also posted that he is looking to purchase a McNaughton Center Saver. Check out his post here- @StaticLV2 is tinkering with segmented turning. He created a really nice cutting jig for the angles. The results are gorgeous! You can see the jig and his process images starting in this post- We have a new member to our forum! @kreisdorph, from Tennessee, posted some of his awesome work. You really need to check out his post to see more of his turnings- One of our members, Brian Longshore, "Big B", is battling the dreaded "C". He's a Navy vet. Here's the link to his Patriot profile- https://thepatriotwoodworker.com/profile/4825-big-b/ If you do Facebook, you can follow his progress at- https://www.facebook.com/brian.longshore.9. What’s Coming Up- Click on the image for the link to registration- From Cindy Drozda- For The Newbies- From Richard Raffan, a tip on making/using a "tail center disc" Last week we posted a safety tip when using the Jacob's Chuck with the tail stock. Lyle Jamieson has an idea that secures the chuck in the tail stock- Expand Your Horizons- Richard Raffan continues to work on his stash of green elm. The warping really creates interesting designs. New Turning Items- Sorry couldn't find anything interesting. Everything Else- I had gotten some cherry a while back only to discover most of it had "windshake" damage. One of the pieces destined to be a bowl became pretty much fodder for the garbage man. I salvaged one small piece for a little bowl only to have it explode while sanding. So as not to have the efforts be a total loss, I cut what was left to see the profile and how I was doing with wall thickness consistency. I was using only my fingers as a gauge, except for the bottom, where I use a gauge/jig from Sam Angelo to determine the thickness. I'm pretty happy. The wall thickness could have been a little better at the transition from side to bottom. And maybe a little thinner overall. Safe turning
February 15, 20242 yr Thanks Lew. Another great thread. Awesome to have another turner @kreisdorph on board too. Prayers to @Big B for treatments, remission and complete healing. Continued prayers for @HandyDan also.
February 15, 20242 yr Thanks Lew. I just got some elm for when I get back into the shop so watching Raffin's videos and gonna try some of that. As to Raffins discs Long time ago Cptn Eddie did what he called a soft touch. It was a piece threaded in 3/4 to go onto One Way style live center. Then you can shape contact point to what ever you want. A friend of mine was getting rid of a bag full of Rubber Chucky pieces in red and they work really well.
February 15, 20242 yr Popular Post I wasn't aware of windshake before a few weeks ago. There's a tree that was cut down 2-3 years ago (guessing) near my house. I cut out a section and made a bowl. It wasn't until just after I had roughed it in, that I noticed a distinct line in one of the scrap pieces. A very light tap broke it apart. The only thing holding it together is those little nubs. Figured I should check the bowl I just made and, sure enough, it broke right apart. I'm surprised it held together on the lathe. I never did identify that tree species. My best guess is poplar (tulip). VID_20231218_092121.mp4

Unfortunately, almost all of the logs I got were affected. Might be able to make some little hollow pieces from what's left. I doubt there will be many bowls.
