June 21, 20232 yr Author Popular Post Today was getting all the mortising and inlay done. Now I have the glass dimensions so I can get them ordered. They are not glued up yet. That will make it easier to do the last step which is mortising in the Tectus hinges. Today was my first time using the domino machine. I’m very impressed. It has a very short learning curve and the accuracy is right on the money. I think the actual time spent mortising both doors was maybe 30 minutes. Paul

July 6, 20232 yr Not to take away from the beautiful door, but that light switch cover is the perfect compliment for it. Excellent
July 6, 20232 yr Author Popular Post The finish so far is one coat of Watco. I’m not sure what she wants for the final finish. Probably several more coats of Watco. Here are a couple of my lessons on these doors so far. Our first choice for doors has always been Honduran Mahogany. Sapele is not nearly as stable but also much harder so even though the Sapele has to be laminated the end result is pretty decent. It does not tool as well as mahogany so routing and shaping requires a bit more attention. The Tectus hinges most definitely live up to their reputation. Having control in all directions much like a euro cabinet hinge is a game changer and they are as smooth as any standard hinge with bearings. The real lesson for us was Wenge. What a nasty wood to work with. It is now my least favorite wood of all time. It turns black with finish so color wise it is a good substitute for ebony but everything else about it is miserable. It is very brittle. Worse than bamboo. Even with the best blade and fully backed fence the stuff will just explode occasionally. In most cases we are using abrasives to grind the miters. It is very fibrous like bamboo and the splintering is hard on the hands. Oh well. These things are meant to challenge us. Paul
