I tried the link BillyJack posted (to Lumberjocks) and got that reply. I've been a member there for several years, mostly looking for ideas for a new workbench. Think I posted 2 or 3 times. Their heading says the site is for professionals, so I'm guessing they don't want me hanging around. Oh, well, that's another 10 minutes a month that I can spend here!

Some sites prefer you not to be a professional even though they encourage it in their opening statement. It says that at Woodworkingtalk, but many think it shouldn’t

When I started back at Woodtalk, a member there was concerned that I was on the forum. Yes I worked for professional shops for 37 years, but I also had a hobby shop longer than that. A lot of pro’s gave their insight on cabinetry, furniture, etc in the early days of woodworking forums. Later with multiple source for information got condemned for partipation..

There are legitimate websites and communities for the trades, where folks who are business owners can meet up, exchange ideas about stock, methods, material processing and handling, profits, accounting etc.

 

Certainly ours is not one of them, and certainly LJ's and others mentioned are far from a trade community, though there are folks there who are involved in the trades and business ownership, those sites are hardly "trade sites".

Notice how I favor the terminology "trade"? (Billy Jack, no offense meant sir) Because I am holding the older definition of professional for the higher education required occupations such as doctors, lawyers, teachers and more. The trades were never considered professions, not until it was socially acceptable to be called professionals and elevated to the level of doctors and lawyers. This philosophy was especially famous and pushed by the unions, in order to fight for higher wages, to compare trades with the professions was a way to reinforce that argument.

 

I know the modern and commonly popular definition is any work that derives an income, but that is a bastardization of the word "professional". So where does it end? Now keep in mind I honor and respect all honest work, I was raised to always respect an honest job.

But, where does it end? Professional dog walker, professional fence installer, professional hair dresser, professional whatever?

 

A true profession requires higher education, and is grounded in a discipline that has moral statements of conduct and serves humanity or society in many cases.

I know I may be offending some folks here, if not many, but lets get grounded, we work with "wood". It's a skill learned mainly by being mentored, it requires no higher education, it does not require any education for that matter, it only requires at its core, the ability to be able to form pictures in our heads as to what the finished product or art should look like, the ability to work with your hands, and natural skill and imagination is helpful as well.

It's not a profession, as much so as a boxer is not a professional although I know they like to think they are.

 

I can tell ya one thing though, I love working with wood, and when folks ask me what I like to do, I proudly tell them, I love woodworking! And when I did make a living working as a carpenter in the old days, I always considered myself a tradesman, a professional never entered my mind nor my vocabulary. Me thinks the LJ's of the world need to come off their high horse?

 

This is what you get when I get two weeks vacation from work, for Christmas Ya'll got me till Monday next week!

No hurdles here, just click on download and you got it, you don't even have to be logged in, it's all open source content.

I was in the union for a short time, but got out. professional is a dirty word amongst hobbyist.

I stopped going Sawmillcreek  because  don’t feel it’s right to charge to look at pictures. I went there to help

I much prefer maintaining my amateur status. Turning professional requires all the public appearances, autograph and book signings,  endorsements, TV commercials not withstanding the considerably higher tax brackets. No thanks, I'm better suited to be an amateur...or is that immature? I always get those two mixed up.

It is, what it is…I was trained by a professional, I payed my dues..

I like that differentiation you made John, no quarrel from me. But back to where we are in all this, I'm not even an amateur...but I do consider myself a serious hobbyist.

There's always one exception. 

I like being able to retrieve and download images. Several "lost folders", series of images, have been preserved here in Gallery.

 

My Attachments, that is another story. What a mess. Unknown if it is searchable.

What kind of attachments and where do you attach them? And how do you search for them?

 

Are we talking files attached in a discussion? Images attached in a discussion?

The general TPW search does not appear to search attachments by name.  Attachments are likely excluded entirely by the website search engine.  But the web engine does find text referencing the attachment if such text exists.

 

EG:  "small sculpture" comes up in a thread but does not reference this randomly-chosen attachment (see below).

 

Also (and possibly more importantly), when I google "small sculpture no. 5 patriotwoodworker" nothing comes up, maybe a clue the web-bots do not troll attachment names? If attachments by names were categorized by the web-bots, it would increase your SEO

 

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the practice of orienting your website to rank higher on a search engine results page (SERP) so that you receive more traffic. 

 

Organizing within Gallery is tops, though.

@Woodman, there is a reason our attachments aren't searchable by search engines, I can't remember why so I sent a message to our developer to find out why. I do believe there is a security issue with allowing search engines to crawl our images folder on our server.

That being said, I know this is not a "Search" but you can go to your "My Attachments" at your profile drop down menu and do a filter or sort option to find your attachments, if you have not already seen that, I know it is cumbersome.

Also, a work around:

Pretend you want to post a reply or create a topic, start the process but don't go through with it, while in the screen to create your topic or post a reply, you can click on "Other Media" at the lower right corner of the edit screen, then click on "Insert existing attachment". Then you can search your attachments by name, this is assuming of course you named your attachment before uploading to our server and it's not some arbitrary numeric file name. Then "Insert image", this will insert it into your post, then left click on the image and "Open Image in New Tab" and you can then download your image if that is your goal.

 

Hope this helps for the interim, till I get clarification on why attachments are not generally searchable.
