June 17, 20224 yr Could have used your organization the other day. After realizing I had reduced a key shelf component into utility strips. A component carefully cut on the scroll, sanded, beveled, scraped . . .

June 19, 20224 yr Author Busy 1/2 hour in the shop, this morning...Jointer Work.. first 2 edges were already done, this is #3...#4 had a bit of Spalt... Set the middle board in place.. Then set these 2 over onto the box..and work on the last board.. That Steel "Tinner's Rule" also makes a decent straightedge...to check for any high spots, I also checked for a square edge...too easy to tilt that plane... Last edge, done...then the glue, cauls and clamps show up.. "There goes the Neighborhood" Was a right busy half hour, according to the shop's floor... "ya think?" Stay tuned..
June 21, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Normally, shop is closed on Mondays....got bored, this evening...so Cleared off the tablesaw...set up the rip fence...to 1-3/8" width.. Run all 4 collar parts through...was trying to remove some of the bow, too... Looks a bit less clunky? Moved the tablesaw out of the way, and bring out... My Router Table....fence was just on the tablesaw... Still has Start & STOP lines...first cut.. Move the fence away from the bit for cut #2... Then figured out how much to trim off the two end pieces of the collar... About THAT much? And the cut need to be square...we have ways.. Reset this from 45 to 90 degrees, check with a square...clamp a part in place... About 18 strokes to make a cut...times 2.. And this is the back saw I actually sharpened by meself So...Tuesday's tasks will be to cut the matching tails... And plough a 1/4" x 1/4" groove to house a raised panel.... Which is just "hanging out", waiting to see how much trimming it will take...before I raise the outside face, and rebate the inside face...might be a busy week? Welcome to drop by and help out.....wear earplugs...cussing can get a bit LOUD.. Stay tuned..
June 21, 20224 yr Popular Post Moving right along although my "pool bracket" is now busted. Knew I should have sent some laundry over

You can even buy a bag of replacement pads for them at Harbor Freight. Steve have you ever tried using some hot glue to hold the pads in place? I have some smaller Jorgensen's and the the pads come off them as well.
June 21, 20224 yr Steve your panels all float in the glue ups?? I'm having trouble following how and where those dovetails come together. Could you please help me understand this procedure? Thanks Pat
June 21, 20224 yr Author Popular Post All the panels will "float" in grooves....maybe a single small nail to keep them from sliding left or right... Once the collar has been dry fitted to the dovetails, then I plough a groove to house the lids raised panel, all around the inside of the collar...where it will line up with the top "Tail" on the ends....it will hide the groove. First..I need to cut them tails, and get them fitted in place.....need the collar dry fitted together, so I can trim the glued up panel to final size...THEN make it into a Raised panel, like the panels in the sides of the box.... Boss willing, and a "Work Shirt" to replace the "Sunday go to Meeting" shirt.....I might get a little bit done, today Stay tuned..

Yes they do come off occasionally but just glue them back on.
June 21, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Late start, today...1330 instead of 1300hrs....spent 2 hours IN the shop...quitting time was 1530hrs....hauled a needful thing to the shop.. Turned the shop fan up to HIGH setting. Needed to get 4 corners done.. And dry fitted... first hour is done...second hour was for grooves to be milled..short ones... And LONG ones... Checked for any high spots.. And check the the grooves will line up.. Amazing...clear off the bench...sit both the panel and the collar on the bench.. Panel will need a trim...TOMORROW..set the collar over on the box.. Seems to match up with the box. as for the panel.. It can sit here a while...needed to sweep the floor.. Had a lot of "Krunchies", Maple Flavoured, at that...some are at least 3' long! Stay tuned...MIGHT have a glue up by Friday?
June 22, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Ok...this will be a long one..another 2 hours in the shop...I'm whooped, soaked, and getting crampy Preset the clamps... And measure what size the panel will need to be....set the clamps and the collar aside... Need to trim that much off this end...second mark? Are for the saw guide, set to the width between the blade and the edge of the saw's foot.. Like this...then run the saw through, pushing the saw forward and against the fence.. Then, rotate the panel to the other end....this time set for 35" total length of the panel...Now, one of the edges was jointed before the panel was glued up...the other edge has a taper to it ( 17-1/8' to 16-7/8") so, I am using the jointed edge as a reference...Layout, clamp guide, make the cut...panel is now set for length.. Making a mess? Tain't seen nuttin, yet... Park the saw out of the way for a bit.... While I set up for the tapered edge removal.. Mark the far end at 16" width...clamp the straightedge down there....come up to this end, do the same thing...double check both places...then draw a line along the straightedge....look through the scrap pile for one STRAIGHT board that was also long enough..and clamp it in place.. However, the marks this is clamped to, allow for the circular saw's footprint....turns out, I also need to joint this edge.. With the Cordless Jointer, of course.. Next? Seems the panel needs flatten a bit.. We have waves..and bad spots... Ok, have an old, beat up Jack plane...set it a tad deep.. Going across the grain.."Scrub-a-dub"....then the big guy finish things off... Flattening the "hills" left by the Jack plane...worst face was then picked out...panel still has a slight cup to it... Last tasks for today...(Son had the Clothes Dryer running) There is a 5/16" cutter onboard...depth is set to 1/4"... Plan, is to work my way around all 4 edges...THEN flip the panel over and start to raise/bevel all 4 edges until they fit into the grooves in the collar...just for... Once this was started, a quick saw cut at the end prevented any blow-out...2 out of 4, done.... Time to use the shop broom... And... Then haul the dried clothes upstairs..and call it a day....got a wee bit done, though? Stay tuned

June 23, 20224 yr Author Nope, just a few strokes with a backsaw Have 2 more rebates to do, today...then flip the panel over, and start planing bevels....panel is too big to saw the bevels on the tablesaw...back to the Paul Sellers way, I guess.. Stay tuned, film @ 2300 hrs...I hope
June 23, 20224 yr Author Popular Post "Best laid plans of Mice and men..." WAS going for a glue up, this afternoon...Sir Uncle Charles had other plans...75 minutes of nothing but shoving planes around...made a large pile, it did... Ok...Plan for today...was to finish up the rebates... Making thick shavings, maybe too thick? This was the "easy" one ( why are my toes cramping?) then on to the last rebate.. One or 2 swipes with the 45, then a saw cut on the exit...this end needed a little more help.. Made a nice DEEP knife wall...see how that works.. Set the router plane to depth, do a bit of clean up.. A chippy day? Ok, flip the panel over.. Lay out a stop line for a bevel...I WAS going like Paul Sellers, and use a #4 plane ( KK-4)...but...after a few swipes...saner minds prevailed... Meet Mr. McRough, and Mr. McFine.....One to get things close, the other to fine tune the fit #1 bevel fitted...( toes are still cramping?) BTW, it took 2 of those yellow dust bin loads to clean the shop.. #2 bevel fitted.. Starting to get serious...press on to Bevel #3....even used the Stanley # 8c to flatten things level in the bevel.. Was getting a bit too overheated... "Quitting Time!" 1 hour and 15 minutes total time....went to sweep up that pile...about the time the last load into the trash can...SIR Uncle Charles hit...and hit HARD....back of the right leg, fingers, toes, ribs...barely made upstairs...and inhaled a Zero G gatorade.......still fighting cramps....he just doesn't quit.. Maybe tomorrow, I can get that last bevel fitted, and a glue up? I'm done, for today..
