June 7, 20224 yr Author Went to retrieve my bottle of Diet Mountain Dew I left in the shop...decided to see how them bevels are going to work out....workout being the operative word here... Had to modify the end grain stop line...way too far down....but, I now have the end grain bevels on both ends of THAT panel..done...same as my Cardio Workout for today....did not even bother with a camera (later, maybe?) or to sweep up....whew....maybe tomorrow, after a night to recover from today's workouts... Debate is whether to do ALL 12 end grain bevels first...THEN. change the jig to do the side bevels.....problem...I will also need a rebate on the inside of the panels...using that same jig... Rebate? Whether to use the Ward's #78...or...the Stanley #45...or both? one for cross grain (78) the other ( 45) for with the grain..hmmm?
June 8, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Took the camera to the shop...not a good idea...however...bevels.. Bevel #2 Bevel #1.. Thought I would just set up the #78...should have known better.. That black streak? That is a reflection, from the Ward's #78...and the rebate it just made... I did sweep up this mess, though... Rebates are done on the ends...just some clean up going on... Been using the little block plane to fine tune the fits..... And this is all set up for tomorrow..."NEXT!" Too many planes? Nah... Stay tuned.. Edited June 8, 20224 yr by steven newman

June 8, 20224 yr Author 4 hours IN the shop, today.....film @2300hrs Paying the price of working "overtime"....barely made it back upstairs....
June 8, 20224 yr Author Popular Post The "Aftermath", after the floor was swept.. hmmmm.. And, what is sitting on the saw, for now... Have 2 of these to do, yet...mainly adding the rebates to the insides Dry fit #1, inside view... And the outside view...Dry #2? Also an outside view.... rest of the bevels: Tilt the tablesaw to 10 degrees, set the rip fence...run all the panels through on all their edges, but, not until each panel had been planed flat, with a hand plane...saw marks were then cleaned up with a couple hand planes. Rebates: Reset the saw...run all the panels through to start a rebate. Stanley 45 to remove the waste... Had to set up the jig....turns out I still needed to touch up the bevels, after the first dry fit.. Still have the rebates to do on the end panels, need to reset the jig, too. Now, IF I had kept going with just the hand planes to do the bevels....might have gotten 1 or 2 done on their ends, today...but.....22 bevels? Not happening... Have some fine tuning to do here and there..preset a couple pipe clamps...going to need them later...but NOT today...I am whoopped Stay tuned..
June 10, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Took Thursday off from the shop....and am still a bit sore, and crampy.....that will learn me.... No spare cash for yard sales this weekend...guess I could head to the shop? We'll see how it goes..after Lunch. Stay tuned.....
June 10, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Had a 2 hour time limit for the shop, this morning.....0930 to 1130hrs....then sweep and leave the shop...no "Overtime" allowed on Fridays, right? Repair work: Had two splits to repair, along with fixing the reason for the splits.....rebates weren't deep enough...we have ways.. Once this was done, and things fit together properly....went ahead and glued things up... Set this and the of assembly aside, have work for the tablesaw to do... The 2 end panels each get 4 cuts made...depth adjusted a hair, too..reset the jig to hold the panel... WIDE chisel to pop the waste loose on the end grain...router plane to clean and level....flip over.. Fine tune the bevel for fit...repeat for the other 3 end grain ends....reset the jig a bit..long grain will NOT just pop off...so.. Stanley 45 to remove most of the waste, followed by.. Again, flip over, and fine tune the bevel for fit..repeat for the other 3 long grain sides Was able to dry fit the end assemblies...#1 Inside view...and outside view..set this over on the tablesaw, while I dry fit the other panel.. While #1 is getting clamps preset.. I might have to notch for the clamp's pads? Clean up, aisle #3... Bench is a bit full, right now... Busy morning? Stay tuned

June 10, 20224 yr Author Notch the tongue so the clamp pads stay put....otherwise they would just slide off. And, once the corner joint is assembled and glued up...what notches?
June 11, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Last night...glued up that end frame & panel...using those notches... Details? Well, this morning, I cleared the bench for action.. Laid out the notches for the other end panel.. Chisel to remove the waste. Removed the clamps from the other end panel, and .. "Recycled" them. Issue with the top rail not setting into place...clamps to fix that. Set this aside, clean up the first end panel, and set it aside...for now.. Tablewsaw needed cleaned off.. Turned to the left. The long side panel was set up on the saw. and removed from it's clamps..left the 2 pipe clamps ON the saw...panel was sat over on the bench...other panel was then glued up.. And the other glue-up set on top....as for the long side over on the bench? Panels are pinned in place, glue joints cleaned up. Pinned? 1 small brass nail...set so the panel can still expand or contract...but not slide side to side...same with the end panel...as for them notches? What notches? Did a dry fit, for now... Waiting on glue, again...fun part will be tomorrow, when I TRY to glue all 4 sides together.. 1 hour of shop time, so far, today.... Stay tuned..
June 12, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Laundry Detail, today... Second End panel is out of the clamps, cleaned up, and dry fitted.. As well as the second Long side.. Had to flip it over...then a bead of glue along each tongue...and a few clamps.. Diagonal Clamp to pull things square...was about 1/8" out....not anymore Let this sit a day or 2...while I figure out a bottom and a lid for it...meanwhile.. Bench is cleaned off? Wonder how long it will stay that way... Stay tuned..
June 16, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Ok..clamps are removed.. Swing it around, to where I can work on the cleats....since I went out and bought a 1/4" x 24" x 48 Luann plywood panel for the bottom of this thing....hmmm...can't get to the 4 larger Mitre Boxes? We have ways.... Millers Falls No. 1816...the one that I rehabbed last year. Including that saw...set it for a 45 degree cut.. Helps to have a 3rd hand... Idea is to miter both ends of the 2 long cleats.. Glue and clamps....no metal fasteners needed....then fit the 2 short cleats...one needed cauls.. To keep the round clamp pads out of the "good" wood...on the other end.. Clamps had their own pads. Need to be able to walk past this mess....flip the case over... And moved it so I am not getting stabbed by clamps as I walk by... BTW...the DeWalt blade in the tablesaw is getting a bit too dull...so.. I'll put this on the tablesaw, if and when it is available. Dewalt is about 3 years old...we'll see how this one holds up...same price as the DeWalt.. Stay tuned...need to cut that plywood panel to size....

June 16, 20224 yr Author Those Harbor Freight F style clamps come with their own rubber pads....though they tend to fall off sometimes. You can even buy a bag of replacement pads for them at Harbor Freight.

Actually a caul is slightly thicker in center and would be placed cross grain with clamps on each end. I make mine about 1.5 to 2 thick and at least 1 wide.
June 16, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Laundry Detail, today Old saw blade... Was getting a bit too dull...and, one of the cleaned up ends.. Leveling out the glue joints...New saw blade was put to work.. Cross cut the plywood for length, then set up the rip fence for width....then a test fit... Like the cleats? Then a bead of glue all the way around on the cleats...lay the panel down into the glue.. Add a few screws (14) to hold things in place, while the glue dries....floor is still a bit damp, so.. Set it up here, for now....while I get started on a lid. Thinking this just might be the "Front" of the chest... Right now...chest is 36-1/4" long, stands 16" tall, and is 17" front to back. Stay tuned...
