June 2, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Dryer was running much later, AFTER the shop had cooled down... A Stanley 45 can be a bit "finicky" to set up, at times.. Stiles for the end frames need a tongue milled...to make a corner glue joint. All of this was AFTER I got the last 4 of the 1/4" x 1/4" grooves done Laundry Detail also meant I had time to set up for some tenons...finding just the right blade height was the problem. First try..was a tad too skinny.. So, lower the blade a hair..try again.. And see how this fits.. Used a bit of scrap to make this "pattern" Tenons will be "Haunched" ( a notch) that fills in the groove , and then fills in a 1/4" deep mortise. Not about to do all of the tenons by hand...so.. We have ways. Fence is more of a Stop Block, than a guide. I also set out a few parts... To check how the panels will fit ( they were about 1/4" too long) and to see about a foot... "Little Feet"? Those last four rails....were ripped for width, cut for 11-1/2" length...jointed and grooved. Was a very BUSY day, yesterday.. Burn barrel was hauled upstairs, intended to empty it into the fire pit. Then the Thunderstorms kept rolling through....kind of hard to burn in a downpour, ain't it?Because...I think I have enough on the shop floor for a second load....
June 2, 20224 yr Popular Post Some real "purty" spalting in some of those pieces. Coming along quite nicely.
June 2, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Start time, today...1430 hrs.....around 1530 hrs, toes were starting to get crampy... Got the last of these things done. Cutter was centered, issue was the wood was a hair wider than the cutter was designed for...block plane to remove the extra along the edges..Time to change the Stanley 45 a bit...sliding stock was removed, reset the fence..and the depth stop was set up.. Not going all that deep, either..only needed 15 strokes....(left hand was operating the camera, BTW) This groove is for the inside face of the front/back stiles... Once I figured out which face that was...test fit? Then lay out a few cuts for the bandsaw to do.. another view? Right about here..was when the toes started to cramp up....decided to stop for the day... Stay tuned

June 5, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Time to "Up Date!" Already had the dividers milled with tenons.. But, the rails need a little different set up....while I can do most of the tenon like this... On the edge with a groove...it is the edge without a groove that needs a little different set up.. All the rails will be standing up, with the groove showing...same blade height....just the fence gets moved a bit.. Called a Haunched Tenon. The longer section goes into the mortise, that little tab fills the groove.. (had some crumbs down in the mortise) Only needed 16 such tenons.. Stand a rail upright, one pass through the blade, bring the part back to top of blade...and slide to the left..rotate, do the other end, and stack up, up of the way... Made a nice pile of sawdust, last night...floor WAS clean, BTW And... So...I now need 20 mortises chopped...checked the Mortise Jig...still set up to do 1-3/4" legs...one jaw was broken...time to replace that jaw, and reset the jig... New jaw, stile, and old jaw...needed new holes.. As none of the old ones line up..of course..Pilot hole drill/countersink bit ( still split out)and 2 new screws.. Flip the jig over, and install right over the top of the bench's leg.. Test things out.. Jig does have a clamp, BTW Slide the stile out a bit, and do a quick layout.. Then slide back in, and clamp up.. Goal is to chop down about a 1/4" And remove the waste...1st pass with a chisel... Then a couple more, trying to find just the right chisel, to get to the bottom of this... Fancy handle is a Chip Cleaner.. Almost like a hook, pops the chips right out, saves the regular chisel from doing any prying.. Test the fit.. Close..had a couple crumbs holding things up...then simply rotate around.. And repeat....19 more times... Stay tuned..

I may have to start doing rain dances every other day.
June 6, 20224 yr Author Mortise count: need 20... 4 are now done...I'm keeping the end stiles with their front or back stiles... Tried the center divider for fit..one side was placed where it should be.. once it's mortise is done...however, at the other end... Hmm..seems I'll need to trim a half blade width off each end..Rails are straight, BTW.... Might go and see IF I can go over and buy a couple more Maple planks...to make the lid... Boss has a Road Trip for this morning...may do a side trip Stay tuned..
June 6, 20224 yr Author Update #2.... Mortises #5 through #8 are done... As are Mortises #9 an#10...trying to keep track of which part goes where... Figured I'd stop while I was ahead,,, Stay tuned..

June 7, 20224 yr Author Road Trip...spent $10 for three planks, that I had to cut down to fit into the car....that USED to be 1 x 6 x 10' Spalted Maple....needed a little bit to make a lid for this chest.....Might even make it a Frame & Raised Panel style too?
June 7, 20224 yr Author 3 hours of shop time this morning....1000hrs to 1300 hrs...then Lunch, the an hour to edit all the photos was 25, pared down to 23.... Needed to chop a few more mortises...had to sharpen a few chisels, first. The goal for today..was to get the 2 ends "connected" Some of the tenons needed a bit of a trim to get the shoulders squared up.. One end frame dry fitted up, need to get that other one done.. Almost a FULL dry fit.. Front view. Move this out of the way, run the tablesaw a bit.. Until the 2 dividers just slipped into place. Next, Find the center of things.. Lay out for the mortise.. Chop said Mortise...bruises and all.. Test the fit... Rinse and repeat.. Test the clamp set up...then spread some glue on the tenons.. 2 in the middle, and the 3rd to equalize things...checked for square, too...set aside.. This time, I did mark the center lines...something still looked "odd".... Turned out, this end was 1" wider than the other end...pulled things into alignment...and set this aside, too... Done with all of this mess, Need to clear the deck for action.. Because the next tasks involve... These panels....which need flattened, of course.. Then a jig set up.. And a few tools to lay out and plane a bevel... One line for the top of the bevel to stop at, one for the bottom edge of the bevel to stop at...square for each. Millers Falls No. 9 to mill the bevel on each edge...to make a raised Panel.....next time I go to the shop.. Stay tuned..
