When the tree goes in one end and the CNC robots spit out your 'hand-crafted furniture', maybe then. Steve, you've also shown clean-up with a coping saw. Is yours have a tight blade? Do you tension it very tightly? I'm thinking through my difficulties and will buy new blades Ten years is a good run on a blade. Inherited saw, could be 20-30 years. Are your chopping chisels particularly thin? I'm blowing out extra wood between the toes but it may be the light and dry 100 year old wood, it may be the chisels, sharpish but thick. Also operator error ?!?

On small dovetails, I just use the chisel. In either case, I use the chisel "vertically" at the base scribe line to start the waste removal and then switch to a horizontal position, at the end grain, to finish the waste material. repeat that process until approximately half way thru the thickness of the stock. Flip the board and repeat the steps until all of the waste is removed.

March 29, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Chisels have a beveled edge along the sides....IF there isn't a bevel, then the chisel is called a Firmer Chisel. Paul Sellers has a few videos out, that shows how he chops dovetails....I leave a little tab out on the end, while chopping/paring back to the baseline. Chop is down at the base line..pare is from about 1/2 way back then to the baseline. I start on the "show face" first...going about 1/2 way down...THEN flip over and finish the chops..the pare is from the end grain in. Coping saw blade: I use it more like a rasp...to "file" across the opening...seems quicker than using a chisel to pare things level...and the coping can get into areas my chisels can't I lay the teeth over on their sides... Coping saw is an old Millers Falls model. Not to worried about the blade, as long as it is sharp...Blade is as tight as the coping saw will allow.
March 30, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Ok, today was Handle Install 101...since I don't want to chase a drawer all over my bench.. We'll start here...then find the center point... Then center a handle over this spot...using the MK2 Eyeballs.. And mark the locations of the screws,,,then a pilot hole for the screws.. Then install 2 waxed screws..and set this drawer over with the first one.. Lined up nicely...repeat 3 more times... Them move these out of the way..have 4 runners to install.. Using a drawer to help align for the drawer runner of the drawer below it..or above it. Transfer those marks to the other side with a square, add the last 2 runners.... Then see how they all will look.. Need to get a finish on the drawers, though...so.. I did manage to get 2 drawers..Amber Shellac...Lumber is SUPPOSED to be Ash...hmmm. maybe tomorrow, I can shellac the other 3 drawers, and give the stand a coat of Kilz Primer Stay tuned...

March 30, 20224 yr Author Popular Post This morning was "Paint& Finish Day".. The "Finish" part... Was a coat of Amber Shellac on the other 3 drawers..and set aside... The "Paint" part involved this stuff... That needed a LOT of stirring up...before.. The sides got a coat...if a spot will show, it got a coat of white primer... However, I was not intending any to get on me....that wasn't the plan, but... And that was enough for today...besides needing a nap Waiting on this stuff to dry, and see if a second coat is needed... Stay tuned..
March 31, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Painting Day continues... Rattle can Light blue on the white primer. Drawers have been rubbed down with 0000 steel wool.. Drill press has been bolted down...base and the table were given a touch up, gray Primer So...do I use this vise, or... One with a "Quick Release"? Just push that yellow button to release... I think I can call this project done?
