So you're one of those guys eh? Actually I could stand to learn some skills with hand planes and such. I've bought a few old ones and cleaned them up and sharpened the cutters but have yet to spend th

a "tailed cutter"  ..... the END is near.

Not yet. When the tree goes in one end and the CNC robots spit out your 'hand-crafted furniture', maybe then.

Steve, you've also shown clean-up with a coping saw. Is yours have a tight blade? Do you tension it very tightly? I'm thinking through my difficulties and will buy new blades  :ChinScratch: Ten years is a good run on a blade. :WonderScratch: Inherited saw, could be 20-30 years.

Are your chopping chisels particularly thin? I'm blowing out extra wood between the toes but it may be the light and dry 100 year old wood, it may be the chisels, sharpish but thick. Also operator error ?!? :PullingHair:

If there is a lot of material to be removed, I use the coping saw. On small dovetails, I just use the chisel. In either case, I use the chisel "vertically" at the base scribe line to start the waste removal and then switch to a horizontal position, at the end grain, to finish the waste material. repeat that process until approximately half way thru the thickness of the stock. Flip the board and repeat the steps until all of the waste is removed.

Chisels have a beveled edge along the sides....IF there isn't a bevel, then the chisel is called a Firmer Chisel.

Paul Sellers has a few videos out, that shows how he chops dovetails....I leave a little tab out on the end, while chopping/paring back to the baseline.   Chop is down at the base line..pare is from about 1/2 way back then to the baseline.   I start on the "show face" first...going about 1/2 way down...THEN flip over and finish the chops..the pare is from the end grain in.

Coping saw blade:   I  use it more like a rasp...to "file" across the opening...seems quicker than using a chisel to pare things level...and the coping can get into areas my chisels can't   I lay the teeth over on their sides...

Coping saw is an old Millers Falls model.   Not to worried about the blade, as long as it is sharp...Blade is as tight as the coping saw will allow.

1954312991_PaintingDayPrimer.JPG.0feabb2b9ec45db9c13839894575da39.JPG

That needed a LOT of stirring up..:ArguingSmileys:.before..
