January 22, 20224 yr Popular Post Sooo, bought some Red Oak, and needed a project idea... Three planks, at $22.98 each ( OUCH!) 1/2" x 5-1/2" x 48"... Grain details, of the top board...other 2 are a little more plain....so, watch a series of videos by Paul Sellers' Masterclass. Downloaded the plan for a Keepsake Box with curved sides So, I'll give him the credit for the design. I'll have a few small details that will be a bit different. Cutting list as provided.. Where he used 9/16" thick stock...I'll have to use 1/2" thick stuff.....I'll have to see about that 5/8" thick stock... So, here we go.."Start up" phase....details? Curved corner details....looks like fun? Applied feet (to make)Lid gets sawn free of the box, note the cut line. Bottom and the panel for the lid are to look like they are floating, but.. They sit in a narrow groove..3/16" at that...we'll see how that works in 1/2" thick stock....he uses a plough plane even on the end grain. He also cuts a stopped dado for that divider to sit in. There is a carved, curved finger grip for me to gouge out(up) Had a pair of Hinges I thought about using.... Maybe....would be surface mounted, and inlaid flush with the surface....we'll see.. Need to haul the Plans and the Planks to the shop. The Masterclaases are Free, just log onto Paul's site....He also has a pay per view Masterclass....but, since I am a bit on the Frugal side (NOT cheap) I went with the Free site. Might be worth checking out...? Boss has errands to run, whenever the "Fliver" gets warmed up (16 sunny degrees outside, about 50 degrees too cold for me) Stay tuned....this might involve a small bit of cussing.. (ya think?)
January 22, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Had to clear off the messy bench, first... Put half of this mess away, which left... The Tool Tray to scrub out.. Not a whole lot of space, is there? Put the 2 longest pencils and that black Sharpie in the well....sharpener and the rest of the pencils headed to a toolbox drawer. Had to make a landing zone clear... As the lumber came down to the shop...next up (AFTER Football)...a visit to... To cut a few parts to length.... Stay tuned..
January 22, 20224 yr Popular Post OK, I'm ready to get busy. Been wondering what we were going to build next. Too cold to hang out in my garage so I'll just hang out in your shop. Best put a tracking device on those pencils or you'll never find them when you need one. VOE. Anyways, best you get back to work. If you need something, let me know.
January 23, 20224 yr Popular Post I'm following along Steven. This must be something special, the red oak and following someone else's plans and all... jus' sayin'...
January 23, 20224 yr Popular Post Make it a twelve pack Gunny. This one is going to be interesting ! That was some expensive red oak Steve. Paul
January 23, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Headed towards the shop about..now Film @ 2300hrs....names may be changed, to protect the guilty
January 23, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Started after Lunch...back and right knee called it "Quitting Time!" at 1530 hrs....Getting slow in me old age... Lay out a few lines.. And, wanted a better end.. Needed 2 pieces at 12" long, and 2 pieces at 6"long...plus get rid of the bad end... So. . But, there was a problem...these are 5-1/2" wide, cutting list wants 4" wide...set up a rip fence.. For a hair over 4" width...run all four through..joint that edge.. Then reset the fence to exact 4" width....and run the jointed edge against the fence According to the plan and the video (Episode 1) The ends are worked on first. Need a 3/16" deep rebate, the width of the side's thickness... Laid out all 4 rebates. Question was how to saw the shoulder cuts...we have ways Not really wanting to handsaw the "cheek" cuts, so.. A sharp, wide chisel, and a rap or two...pops the waste rip off....tried to stay away from the lines..we have other ways.. Called a router plane. Set the depth of cut to 3/16" deep, and peel away the waste..working from both edges in. Repeat 3 times.... Lay out which is the "Top" and Bottom, as it does matter...set the 2 ends face to face.. Then tick off the measurements for the spacing of the tails. Yep, gonna try Tails first... Laid out the saw cuts. Saw the lines. Base lines are at an angle, so the middle saw cuts are stopped at that line...then just chisel out the waste Hand saw to remove the little corner scrap.. Then repeat 3 times.. I kept the plan page right where I could follow it, and check each step Back was getting sore, right between the shoulder blades, right knee was hurting..but.. I think that will do, for today? "Quitting Time!" Try again tomorrow? Have the matching pins to do... It too is curved just a tad...we see how THAT goes.. Stay tuned..
January 23, 20224 yr Popular Post Off and running. Following along. Too cold to do much else. I fully understand that back/ right knee + leg thing too. Cold weather only amplifies it.
January 25, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Today was a Monday...but, since we are snowed in...decided to hide out in the shop, anyway...Task for today? I need to cut the Pins to match those tails.. Seemed easy enough, just hold the tails on the end of a side, and trace around them...in theory. Note the center 2 pins? This should take a bit longer to do Need to learn to leave them lines. Oh, BTW, mark all the boards as to inside, top and bottom...and as each corner gets done, number them.. Hold the saw as vertically as you can...and leave the lines...you want to cut on the waste side..then get a chisel ready.. This is made by Witherby...Torrington area. Chop a bit on the show side.. then flip over and get rid of the rest. Now, about those 2 center pins....stand the board up in the vise, and pare away the waste..then a dry fit.. Got a bit too much line...repeat for corner #2 Getting better at this...#3? finally was able to dry fit all 4 corners.. Corner #1 kind of stands out, don't it...might be a tab hiding in there. Box was even square! Washer was done, transfer the load to the dryer.. Plan calls for 5/8" thick panels for the lid, and the bottom...Found one board I could use for the lid,,,it was 7/8" thick Means I have to resaw it down to 5/8" thick...give or take a hair... Underside IS a bit rough. Did not have any more thick lumber... But..I do have a bit of 1/2" thick stuff I can use for the bottom panel...just have to adjust the Stanley 45 a bit. While trying to get a quilt dry...messed around a bit, and set up the Stanley 45 with a 3/16" wide cutter. Can't use the sliding stock. set the fence and the depth stop....will try it Tuesday....sure there will be some going on. Stay tuned
January 25, 20224 yr Popular Post Coming along nicely especially for a Monday. I suppose Sellar's reason for the different width pins (dovetails) is (1) for an esthetic appearance (2) challenge (3) because he can. FWIW, I see no reason 1/2" panel for bottom wouldn't work OK. If I was doing it, I'd have to make a BIG note on the plans to remind me, assuming of course I could find a pencil Guessing Paul just had some 5/8" stock handy for top & bottom?? Keep building...I'll keep watching.
January 25, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Just watched Episode #2 of the Masterclass on Keepsake Box with curved sides. Seems I am done with all the tasks from Episode #1...onto Episode #2... Panels need grooves Sides of the box need grooves. Stopped dado to house a divder chopped into the inside of both ends Mark and plane the radius on the outside of each box side...planed one at a time (about an 11" radius..) Reassmble the box dry. Saw and pare the nibs where the dovetails stick up proud, until they match the radius Not sure how much I'll get done in 3 hours..we'll see Stay tuned ( might want go and look up Paul Sellers Masterclasses Videos...They are free, just have to register)
January 25, 20224 yr Popular Post 1 hour ago, steven newman said: Not sure how much I'll get done in 3 hours Heck, Steven, the way you work you should have this project done, two more started, the laundry finished and the problems in the Ukraine solved!!!
January 25, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Uuuumm, not quite...started at 1230 hrs..ended at 1440 hrs...Stopped after getting the top and bottom panels fitted into their grooves...I'm bushed...even worked up a sweat Knee was getting sore, back was just starting in....that's enough, for today Film at 2300hrs...After a Cold Guinness Draught Stout, that is
January 26, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Ok...First task was to groove both panels... WAS supposed to use the Plough plane.... No. 11 cutter, too skinny for both skates..had to use just the main skate and the fence. Worked fine for the long grain edges...was having trouble doing the end grain....so...we have ways... Meet the groove adjuster....cut a lot of grooves with this. Had to also adjust a few spots, later... Ok, next task..groove the 4 sides of the box to house these panels. Because the panels are NOT the same thickness, had to first do the lid's 4 grooves, then come back, reset a few things, and then do the grooves to house the bottom panel...so.. Ends first...like that jig? Then the long sides.. Each time, I test fitted the panel to the grooves..had to adjust things a bit,, Was bottoming out..looked over at the plans.. Ok..we can do that..got things to the point that a dry fit of the lid was made.. Next, the box's bottom panel...same set ups, just had to adjust for the panel being thinner.. Again...test fits showed the same bottoming out...by the time I tried a dry fit of all four sides...found out the panel was 3/8" too long....so, back over to the groove adjuster, shorten the panel, redo the groove on that end...test fit to correct one other groove..then... Still a hair long on the ends...was getting tired and sore...decided to stop for the day...there is always tomorrow,eh? Had to sweep up all the Krunchies.. And head upstairs...2 hrs and 10 minutes IN the shop, today.... Tomorrow, the tasks will be...chop the stopped dados into the ends, and star with a hand plane to curve the outside of the box. One side at a time... After that? maybe some glue? Have to go and watch Episode #3 later....where he saws the lid free from the box..... Stay tuned
January 26, 20224 yr Popular Post Good progress for a couple hours. Been wondering what you could get done here if I let you do the laundry?
