If the metal legs fasten with round holes, you might consider elongating them to slots to allow cross-grain movement.  I also think the skirts add an element that the eye/brain expects for a wood object.

The metal, legs have slotted ( 2inch wide) holes.  I need to drill a 11/16 hole in the table to add a threaded insert that the legs bolt on to.  I’m not going to tighten the bolts, just leave them slightly loose for expansion.

I would attach the aprons to the top with clips like this.  Also available from Rockler and Woodcraft if you have one nearby.  There are also "figure 8" versions that screw into the top of the apron and the bottom of the table top.

That is coming along beautifully.  Massive table.  I am with everyone else, a skirt would add to the overall look.

Thanks Gunny.  I am going to go with the skirt.

I’ve used these before, many times in fact and I do have some on hand.  Just so nervous about making this table, I just didn’t think of it.  Thank you VERY much for reminding me about them.

It’s finally finished.  First, thank you all for you comments and advise on putting the skirt on the table.  I did put on on and it makes a world of difference.  The table is 1 1/4 inch thick walnut.  It measures 42wide and 72 long.  It has 9 coats of General Finishes. Ar-R-Seal. (that stuff is beyond awesome!). The legs came from Bear Hollow Supply.  They make the legs right there.  My wife is beyond thrilled with this….happy wife, happy life, as they say.  Anyhow here is the finished product.

I should mention, this is my very first large table.

Great job!  I'm glad you added the aprons.  It would have looked naked without them!
