Popular Post Gerald Posted January 25, 2021 Author Popular Post Report Posted January 25, 2021 Just getting round to showing yesterdays work. Got the shelves cut and ready to glue and glued one . Also did not have stock at 8 inch so glued on a piece to get there on the back. Ran out of cauls so will do the rest tomorrow. Sorry left out the pic with the #8 in use again but that Glue Line Rip Freud blade did most of the work. DuckSoup, Fred W. Hargis Jr, lew and 6 others 9 Quote

I did notice a considerable stiffness in the mechanisms so guess I need to lube those a little with maybe a teflon lube and wax the bars. The thing is I used some clamps for this I have not used in maybe 3 years. Cal, HARO50, DuckSoup and 2 others 5 Quote

I'm right there too. Making things round doesn't require big clamps but it is nice to have them around for the occasional flat woodworking job. DuckSoup, Gerald, FlGatorwood and 3 others 6 Quote
Popular Post Gerald Posted January 26, 2021 Author Popular Post Report Posted January 26, 2021 Was not in any hurry to get to the shop today. Actually my afternoon was broken up by going to get the Covid shot. So today I glued up the second shelf. Then the fun began as I used the two handle scraper to get the glue off and level the joints. Next up the scraping plane. Now talk about something that is a pleasure to use it is this . It smooths and flattens a larger area and you push it just like and plane. If you want you can also get a toothed blade to make stock removal faster. I probably never would have bought it but was a Christmas present about 10 years ago from the wife. Well needless to say was wore out at the end of that. Cal, Fred W. Hargis Jr, DuckSoup and 6 others 9 Quote

Popular Post Gerald Posted January 27, 2021 Author Popular Post Report Posted January 27, 2021 Got the face frame glued up for drawers yesterday. Today went to Lowe’s for undermount slides. Wound up getting regular Slides and will adapt to undermount. This will be a new experience but we only live it once so try something new. The whole face is 34 inches and drawer opening 15 each Cal, DuckSoup, Fred W. Hargis Jr and 6 others 9 Quote
Masonsailor Posted January 28, 2021 Report Posted January 28, 2021 Looking good Gerald. Why do you choose to under mount the drawers ? Paul lew, Cal, FlGatorwood and 1 other 4 Quote

Paul Something I have never done. Started to do the old way with no slides but got to thinking that the wife who will be using mostly tends to pull drawers all the way out and down it goes. Then second is the option to not have a slide showing and since the drawers will not get that much use the center undermount give a more elegant look. Drawers are 14x15 so not a large drawer to need lots of support. DuckSoup, FlGatorwood, HARO50 and 3 others 6 Quote

Just curious about when folks tend to use splines or other joining techniques and when just glue. Helps me understand when I might choose similar options (when I can get back in my garage). There are no panels. Ends are solid using M&T joint. To further the discussion I never use biscuits. Alignment can be achieved by planing the joint after glueup. As to strength side grain joints are as strong as the wood. Fred W. Hargis Jr, Cal, HARO50 and 3 others 6 Quote
Popular Post Gerald Posted January 30, 2021 Author Popular Post Report Posted January 30, 2021 Now all mortises cut and just need a little tweaking. I laid some scrap on shelf support to show most of the look. Will have to cut notches in shelf corners to get them laid in. Now sanding time on shelves and front and back rail. Popular Post Gerald Posted February 7, 2021 Author Popular Post Report Posted February 7, 2021 Getting close now. Today glued the front and back of the drawer box tenons in and screwed the shelves in place. Then time to prep some white oak stock for half inch drawer sides. HARO50, lew, Cal and 3 others 6 Quote
Popular Post Gene Howe Posted February 7, 2021 Popular Post Report Posted February 7, 2021 It's coming along nicely. Those tapered legs are gorgeous. I'll bet that fitting the shelves wasn't a walk in the park. Achieving those subtle things make for real class, though. It's a beautiful piece. Can't wait to see it in it's competed glory. Gunny Posted February 7, 2021 Report Posted February 7, 2021 Fitting taper legs, yeah I tried that once and it was a disaster. Second try I asked for help. HARO50, Cal and FlGatorwood 3 Quote
