If you like the idea of being able to switch tools between handles, or using one handle for more than one tool I did a video on an economical way to do this several years ago. Uses wood you probably a

Food for thought. You may not want the same handle for multiple chisels. Sometimes it’s better to have a beefier handle on your large roughing gouge and a smaller diameter handle on your spindle gouge

  • @Steve Krumanakerwhere were you at when I bought all these expensive handles. Actually I have made handles and tapped for allen screws for this purpose.

Absolutely.

Oh I'm not necessarily talking about bowls in general but more or less general turning projects.  Just gotta open up the different options for tools.

Well my name was invoked so here is my opinion. A round scraper can be used outside a bowl and not leave riblets like marks but a square (with a slight round) is better. I rarely use a scraper on the outside and yes I do have both types scrapers and they ain't small.

The best way and the one I use is with a bowl gouge with Ellsworth grind. This give you long wings which can be used to clean up or scrape the bowl. This is accomplished by dropping the handle to about 45 degrees or slightly less and gently scraping the bowl. Remember light touch and don't get in a hurry. You may ruin a few bowls before getting this so you might want to practice on a scrape bowl. By the way the cut is a pull cut from tenon to mouth of bowl.  This is called a shear scrape and here is a video from Lyle to show you how.

I just picked up actually the Robert Sorby 1 inch Round Nose Scraper... and the Robert Sorby 3/4 inch Skew.  I decided to just go ahead and pick up both of them just because of the extremely short month this month.  Dunno if they will get here this weekend or not due to the incoming snow and how bad it gets.

Remember, move the tools in the direction where the fibers are supported by the wood itself. Outside the bowl, from tenon/mortice to the rim- pull cut. When on the inside of the bowl typically from rim to bottom- push cut.

Exactly! Think of the wood like it's a feather. If you stroke a feather from the quill to the tip, the feathers lay together nicely. If you stroke it from the tip to the quill, it gets ugly quickly.

Finally bought myself a decent bowl gouge.  I went with the same company.  Robert Sorby. This one to be exact Robert Sorby Deep Flute Bowl Gouge 1/2 inch HHS Extra Long Length Handle Overall Length 26 inches 842XLH-1/2.  Bought it off amazon.  I also bought a couple round blanks from Got Wood LLC so I can actually give the gouge a good go.  I will probably wind up trying to learn how to do an Irish Grind for the gouge itself just because of how versatile that grind is.  But yea I can't wait to try it out.

Andrew, I think you will be very happy.  This is a lifelong learning curve.  Enjoy those nice gouges.
