Fascinating use of DTs, Derek. Yours are beautifully done.

Twould be more exciting to see HOW one does a hand cut dovetail....than just doing the old "My dovetails look better than YOURS" routine....now, wouldn't it?

Have a case to build this week, to house a few "extra" chisels.....sorry, can't get any Jarrah...will just make do with some Ohio wood...maybe Poplar, again.   Trying to decide on whether Dovetails ...or....box/finger joints...as I do both by hand.

Maybe do another "Build-along" on how I do such  "complicated" things...

Well Steven, I did post three or four pictorials on how to cut dovetails at the start. But here is a link to videos I have made, all in real time, so do not watch if tired! :)

These were made rather impromtu with my phone. Perhaps you could do so for us as well?

Millers Falls No. 11, Type 2....aka..Junior Jack plane....

BTW: I have ZERO video available,,because..1, I have nobody to do the camera work, WHILE I am doing the woodworking, and 2, I have nothing from them to use to even make the video with, camera wise....Rex Krueger I am not.   he lives 400+ miles northeast of here....:DevilLaughing:

Steven, I would love to see you in action. I do not have an assistant - just a phone on a tripod (which is clear when you watch my "videos").

If my experiences with the feline in the workshop area is anything to go by, they're more of a supervisor rather than camera operator!

Derek, I am in awe of your skill.  I remember seeing some of your progress on that table on Woodnet.

I am also pleasantly surprised you can get some of the tools and references that I'm familiar with -- Lee Valley, Lie-Nielsen, MatchFit, Blue Spruce, Fine Woodworking, Chris Schwarz (Moxon vise), etc.  I also liked your shop in the background.

My favorite math professor taught me that the difference between a trick and a technique is that a technique is simply a trick used more than once. I also remember Tage Frid's technique of using an old card scraper to bang out the walls of a half-blind dovetails.

I use green tape and not blue tape, do you think that would work OK?  :):)

Well, you got me on that one. "How to cut a dovetail thread" Of course I was not thinking the obvious. I have cut wooden threads before in broom handles and also in a quilting loom. Not on a dovetail. :D There is always someone who thinks differently:throbbinghead:

And I always thought your camera work was just "purr-fect".

Welp, furnace won't get put in until next week...means I have all of this weekend to work IN the shop...might even make a few dovetail joints?

One more week with no heat in the house....

Basic dovetails can be quickly mastered with persistence and practice - just have a "go for it" attitude!

More advanced dovetails take a little longer :)

Thanks for the link to the video. I must have missed it in the original post. Really appreciate the tips and seeing some of the jigs you have made.

I'm sure it's cool inside, but at least we're not below normal temps right now.

Thanks. We have all the same tools as available in the US. There are a number of stores that import Veritas, LN, etc. The woodworking community in Australia is no different from that around the world, and the world is a small place now thanks to the internet. We live across the world from each other, and do exactly the same things, influenced similarly .. well, Oz was probably influenced more in the past by the UK, with many migrants from the 50's onward. Get a copy of the Australian Wood Review magazine to sample the local approach.

My machines are predominantly Austrian (3xHammer) and New Zealand (2xNova), with Australian, Canadian and US hand planes, saws, chisels ...

Our wood is different. Certainly West Australian wood is very hard, but also very beautiful.

I am not sure if the tolerances of the green tape match those of the blue tape. Let us know how you get on .... :)
