April 7, 20206 yr Popular Post Well, it had to happen, I guess.....built that Tool Cabinet for the rest of the tools....and the planes get an attitude... So, take a long look at what the "old" plane til looked like. . And, that shelf under the bench's top... Lumber has been bought, Hammer Til has been removed. Demo of the Plane starts tomorrow, I hope..... Not sure if to call the next one a Cabinet, a Hutch....or a Bookcase with doors... Plan is for a series of shelves for the planes to sit on. Drawers at the bottom to house block planes. Then 2 doors to close up over all of this...maybe with some Plexiglass in the doors? May or may not go with dovetails at the corners. Will use sliding dovetails to join the sides to the shelves... 1 x 10s for the sides, top and bottom....and the shelves...I also bought a couple 1 x 4 x4's to rip and cut into two frames for the doors. Biggest thing, is to allow for the doors on the tool cabinet, and the plane til to NOT hit each other, when the open up. Will also use foot pads to raise things up a tad....clearance with the bench's chisels.... Stay tuned...cussing is about to begin...
April 7, 20206 yr Popular Post I'd forget the plexi. Too easily scratched and it attracts saw dust. Lexan MIGHT be a better option.
April 7, 20206 yr Popular Post Use lexan but think picture frame. Pull out some good pictures and make a collage of project pictures. Like the cabinet above my sink and one to the left. One side is mirror. That is so I can see the door when my back is to it.
April 7, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Depends on what I can buy around here. Already going to need a 30" x 38" plywood panel for the back of this thing.... Well..a bit of "demo".. The "Bigs" have been stashed ( two #6s, two #7s) out of the way..and Medium sized ones have their own shelf, for now...as for them Mice.. Not sure IF this is a good idea....liable to come back later and find 14 sitting here.. Which leaves the til empty.. Might have a plan for this, once the plane til has been replaced...something about the saw til wanting a dust cover like door? We'll see.. Once the old til was set aside...I let this door swing all the way open....needed to find the arc in which it traveled...so I can locate where to build at..sharpie held in place, while I swung the door a bit... Since I don't NEED the plane til right out on the edge....I could scoot it back a bit, to clear the arc of the swing...Then, find out how far to the right I could reach... Right about there. 30" wide should be enough...so, something like this? Will need some 1" high foot pads, to get it so the doors will clear the top of the bench.. While cleaning off this spot...found a few "treasures".. NOT Lew Mallet....this was John Doak's Mallet. Not too sure about that clamp-like thing...and more chisels...meh. Ok, a "Plan" was delivered this afternoon, by the Moose & Squirrel Express....trying to avoid any contact from Boris & Natasha... About all I need to start up with.....wonder IF I need to pull a Permit for it? Need to start hauling boards to the shop, and cut them to lengths....Maybe through dovetails at the corners? Sliding dovetails to hold the shelves....might be 3 drawers along the bottom...will need a pair of dividers between them.... I'll build the case, first, them figure out the two doors....and the drawers. Might take all week? At least it might keep me busy....for a little while... Stay tuned..
April 9, 20206 yr Author Popular Post 2 planks taken to the shop,today... Opened the doors to the Tool Cabinet, as I will be working out of there...for a change.. Even hung a couple more items in there...anyway..needed to cut each plank into a 30" and a 37-1/2" plank... Full length D-8 was having issues with binding, 20" D8 didn't. getting better at this handsaw stuff...didn't even hit the steel rods in the vise.. Set out a few tools for use...marked out the tails for one corner joint ( tails first, this time only, NOT a fan) then the bandsaw made a bunch of cuts.. Makes it easier to get the waste out. Chisels to chop out... That chisel had been ground into a triangle shape, to get into tight corners... Tails done. Use these to lay out the pins... knife wall at the "baseline" was done with the marking gauge..more handsaw stuff... I did try the "broomhandled saw" Way too many teeth for a rip cut. I only need 8 full length strokes with the No.4....was trying to leave the lines..on the theory I could always trim back to the lines... So..chop 1/2 way down, leave a chunk on the edge for support...flip over.. Pins done...dry fit? First 2 tries...meh, had to trim a couple spots...finally.. Not the best...at least I can hide this mess... Next three corners will be Pins first. Uncle Charles was after the back of my legs...decided to close the doors on the Cabinet, sweep the floor, and call it a day. Made a bunch of sawdust, today. Will try again tomorrow..might get something done? Stay tuned
April 9, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Just takes practice, is all... There was an Episode of The Woodwright's Shop on PBS, all about dovetails, and how to make them...might look it up on pbs.org and watch Roy Underhill make a few...

Yeah I am going to blow the dust off my HF dovetail jig and do some practice runs. Don't have a stroke.
April 9, 20206 yr Author Popular Post 4 hours of shop time, today Was a "chippy" kind of day.. Lot of chopping going on...some of these had bounced back off of me... Fought all day against Brain Pharts....had to keep double checking all the lay outs.. This one was..ok....had another all marked out, and ready to saw....only to find things were 90 degrees off... 3 corners, all done Pins first, this time....seemed to go a lot faster, that way...chop down about halfway.. Then flip over.. Trimmed up. Use these to lay out the tails....saw and chop those...and another dry fit.. 2 down, 2 to go,, 3 down, 1 to go...and... Seemed to get better as I went along...tried this thing out, where it will be going.. Ready for the shelves, and drawers... Hands were getting crampy...Put the tools away, close the cabinet back up...and set up the router to make sliding dovetails with...Will take most of tomorrow to cut those.. Stay tuned..

That is why I like stuff laid out in a orderly manner. Now any workbench is fair game for stuff, drawers and cabinets, not at all. Going out to shop now to work on my own plane till. Mine will be much smaller, only have 3 at the moment.
April 10, 20206 yr Popular Post I never knew these storage cabinet's were called "tills".......told you guys I was a rookie......See,. I'm learning.
April 10, 20206 yr Popular Post @aaronc, at least you are learning as some of the rest of us are. You are in good company.

April 10, 20206 yr Author Popular Post 2-1/2 hours in the shop ( skipped lunch ) Started out to do just some layout work....Marking things as to "Top" of the case, and.. Bottom of the case. Lines are for 2 drawer dividers...where the 3 drawers will go...Then I took the case apart, keeping track of which way the sides went...and set them back to back.. back to the plans...Setting out the shelf spacings...used a block for the thickness of the shelf.. From the top of one shelf, to the bottom of the next....5-1/2"...clamped the sides up.. made sure everything lined up. Then set up for some grooves.. Set the Speed Square up, used a combo square for the spacing..And IF things are set up right... A groove will appear. Old router still going strong. A few more grooves were made..5, I think.. Got to about here..had to rotate the "plank" about....and do the last 2...checked how they all lined up.. Should look like 5 bow ties. Then figured out what size I needed for the shelf above the drawers...as it will get 2 grooves milled, too... Same routine...do one groove, rotate, and do the other one. Then cut a second shelf...and a blank for the dividers..and reset the router a bit... Hey, I did find the edge guide! Thought I could do a bunch of pins... Hmmm...not working too well. Wound up doing these one at a time. As one of the pins was too skinny. Once the bottom is driven home, the dividers will slide right in. need to haul more lumber to the shop, need 3 more shelves made....cut to length, and pins routed on the ends...Might be ready for assembly tomorrow? Stay tuned...
April 10, 20206 yr Author Popular Post 3 more shelves have been made....ready for a glue up.....cussing levels will be high....ear plugs may be required...
April 10, 20206 yr Popular Post Coming along well. I The detail with dovetails for a mechanical lock for the shelves. That's you going out of your way to make my next build have one more detail to add.
April 11, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Well, that was more than enough "FUN" than what I wanted.... Stage the parts to where I could grab them.. Spread some glue on the pins... Going good, so far....glued up the other side...then things went downhill.. Because I had all of these to install....as soon as I clamped the corners down tight...the sides bowed in.. Even those 2 short pieces...had to pry an opening to get them started...then hammer them into place... These 5 weren't any better...then try to lay this mess down.. And add a bunch more clamps.....bloody things weigh more than the case does.. Added 2 more clamps after this. some of the clamps needed a visegrip keeper. let this sit over night...tomorrow, I'll try to add the back, and square the case up..I hope... Stage #7 of the glue up? Because I've earned it, my friend....as Stumpy Nubs would say... I'm whopped...stay tuned for tomorrow's exciting episode..

Also slipped when it was a bad time. Changed over to plate lock kind and no more problem. Managed to find a CL deal and then found some on EBay one night. Of course that does mean doing something that won't sit well with your wallet. Parting with some cash.
