February 6, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Roh-Kay, Raggy....Was under the weather, yesterday....today? Meh....Beltsander was throwing a bearing.....decided to just buy a new one...and a few belts, and other sand papers... Top is out of the clamps, nothing cracked, or popped...good sign.. This is the second side I worked on, today....new beltsander to remove the dried glue mess ( other side was worse..) then a Stanley #3 took over.. Side #1...and.... Top side #2...set the legs and the drawer front out.. To get an idea what to cut that plank back through into apron parts....needed the lengths, plus allow for 1/2" tenons...lay these down, for now...Not enough room to use the tablesaw for a cross cut or 3 Board was too long for the Mitersaw... So...D-8 can do the job, I guess... Laid out a few cuts, with a hair extra....then set the board down into the vise, and made a few cuts.. 2 sides, a back, and a scrap.... Next...maybe do the tenons? Need straight edges, first, and then square the ends. Straight line rip? Then this edge against the fence, set to match the width of the drawer front....then set up a stop block... Set 1/2" beyond the kerf...repeat cuts...lots of them. Doing the "Shoulder" cuts...marked how deep to saw ( 3/16") and make a cut... Leave the line? Nope, this was re-cut to split the lines...Got all the shoulder cuts done...(24 of them!) Next, the tricky part....mitre box can't do cheek cuts. So..mark two lines on the end grain, 3/16" in from the edge...wide chisel and a mallet... Bevel to the outside, edge of the SHARP chisel right in the line...one whack, move a bit repeat....results a bit rough? We have ways Smooths them right down. Then a notch was added to both ends... tenons done. May see about chopping a few mortises, tomorrow? Swept the little mess... Over to the BIG mess... And called it a night. Need a windless, DRY evening, to run the Burn Pit....need to empty the trash can...so I can refill it... Stay tuned
February 8, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Needed mortises for those tenons.....and a few other "details" done....like doing a bead along the bottom edge of the aprons... Using the Stanley 45, with a bead cutter....tried the same for the legs....didn't work to well...we have ways.. Needed smoothed out a bit...grain was having "issues" with the router bit... I also cleaned up a few glue lines, like the one running down the center of this leg...had to make sure I was putting the cove on the correct corner.. Then laid out tools for a mortise or two... And laid out a mortise... Blue square measures from the outside face in, black square the thickness of the tenon..then chop out the waste..was having issues with the chisel...after banging away for an hour, and only getting 2 mortises done.... Decided the chisel needed a better edge... Much better. Grind back to a single bevel @ 25 degrees....course stone, medium stone, 3 grits of sandpaper to 2K grit. object under the chisels is a leather strop. How did they do? 20 minutes, from lay out to fitted...then made another one.... I had to mark which leg will be the front leg, where the drawer will be.... So, when I chop a mortise for the back apron....it IS in the back.. The 2 mortises almost meet inside...decided to try a full dry fit...only place available was the top of the dryer... That's not an apron, that is the drawer front...then knocked things down...need to do a webframe, to support the drawer, and build the drawer... Stay tuned..
February 8, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Sitting here, thinking ( dangerous activity, I know) about how to build the webframe.....finally..Single Brain Cell Sketch Up came up with a plan....so, @0300 on a Saturday morning, some dummy was back in the shop....using saws, and planes....and making all the parts needed....Might even get a glue up later, today.... Stay tuned
February 8, 20206 yr Popular Post Not to discourage you Steven, but I was looking at your posting times and wondering What the heck?!? Looking very good!
February 8, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Might be a bit longer than that....the Plan...when the drawer is closed up, it will look like the other 3 aprons ( haven't decided on that bead, yet) but, when you pull the drawer open.. These top and bottom sections stay put. I used the bandsaw to rip, for the thin kerf. These will be held in place with corner blocks... Smaller block for the bottom. Larger blocks go around the leg's corner and into the side's apron at the top Like this one. Glue and screws. the other part laying there? Is the runner the drawer will be sliding on.. Runners get glued to the side aprons, and the bottom of the drawer "rail" with that little glue block...all miter cuts being done on the mitersaw.. Nice and quiet. Didn't do too badly... Then drilled the pilot holes for the screws... Set these aside, for now....maybe a little assembly? Drawer runners glued on....make sure the edge with the bead is the one you glue to...almost messed that detail up. Then add a couple legs...and more clamps... First side, outside view, and... Had to keep track of where the back apron will go....will add a thin, plywood guide strip, later...side 2? Inside, and... The outside. You can see side 1 in the background. Set this second one over there, out of the way... Back to waiting on glue to dry....may do a bit this evening, after Supper....doubt IF it will be another 3am shop time.. Stay tuned..
February 9, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Parts for the drawer needed cleaned up a bit.. Discovered I had glued the 2 little braces to the wrong face of this part....snapped them back off...came up with a better idea... two screw holes, then plugs after installed,,,came back and jointed the other edges, too.... had to clear the top of the tablesaw, lower the blade, set the top of the table, good side down on the tablesaw...then moved some clamps around... Clamped the back apron into place, and the lower "lip" of the drawer...need one clamp to pull diagonals, long enough to fix things in place...then the cussing began.. Trying to flip this over/around to where I could install the corner braces....biggest fight was the front two...getting things to line up with the lower rail...finally.. Think I'll just stop here, for today....will see what happens tomorrow.. Stay tuned..
February 9, 20206 yr Popular Post I fixed the portable radiator heater for my wife, and glued up some blanks for turning. You on the other hand built an entire dining room set in the same amount of time.
February 9, 20206 yr Popular Post I know I get almost exhausted trying to keep up. Man, do I need a break. Great job, Steven. I don't know how you do it all so quickly. Great job.

February 9, 20206 yr Author Popular Post 4 hours in the shop...whew...came back upstairs, and looked out the window by the computer desk... Who ordered this crap? Anyway, clamps came off the table's base...2 screws I forgot to add were driven in....had a issue with screws breaking off, too...but.. Those 2 screw holes NOW have a screw installed...needed a plug cutter... And a bit of scrap that matched the wood around those holes... Will come back later, and trim it off flush....Dragged the last plank of Ash to the shop...and milled a few boards out of it... Then sized these to fit in a drawer...2 sides, and a back.... Task is to turn this into a drawer ( will have to buy a bit of 1/4" plywood... ) Dovetails? I do pins first.. Then use these to mark out the tails to fit... I WAS going to use that chisel..was too wide..we have ways.. Old Harbor Freight chisel, 1/4", reground a bit...gets into them tight corners... Next? need a groove for the bottom of the drawer.. Lined the Stanley 45 up, so a tail will cover the groove...then grooved the sides... Need a dado for the back of the drawer to sit in....cut the walls of the dado over on the mitre box.. Then popped most of the waste out with a chisel... Hmmm...then, we find out how well a router plane works....once I got the depth set.... I think it will do... test the fit of the back? It fit, was a hair too wide...Millers Falls No. 14 to trim a bit off the top... As for those clipped corners on the ends of the sides? Called a Drawer Starter Bevel...makes it easier to start a full drawer back into it's place....next, back gets held in place with screws and glue need pilot holes drilled Then flip over, and do the counter sinks for the screw's head.... Why change bits...when you can change drill and all.. Then a dry fit of the drawer...still need plywood for the bottom.. as for those 2 plugs... Trimmed flush...almost..What plug?....not a bad 4 hours in the shop... Stay tuned..might get something done, tomorrow
