January 31, 20206 yr Popular Post Still have a few of Ash, to use up. Thought I could do something with....I had two other 3/4" x 6" x 54" flat sawn Ash boards, and brought them to the shop. Very wavy edges, set up the rip fence a few times...to remove the worst of the waves, cut out a few of the worst knots....while doing all this saw work...had a cut off fly back at me... I think the T-shirt took most of the hit.....yep, that will leave a mark.. Got 3 blanks ready for a glue up....just under 22" long, to make a panel 14" wide.. Glue clamps and cauls... Wonder which face will be the "show" face? There is still 3 boards upstairs, can be glued up into leg blanks....thinking this one will be a drawer front... And maybe some aprons? Right now, letting the glue cure, and me heal up.... Stay tuned

February 1, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Three boards to haul to the shop...when I am not quite as sore... face grain.. End grain... And two have a bit of bark to them....hope there is enough room in the shop..

February 1, 20206 yr Author Popular Post One hour of actual work in the shop, today....Cut one plank into a pair of 24" boards....had a problem to fix, before too much got done... As these two had some wavy edges...they were from the same board, too Yeah....Set the rip fence to the narrowest spot on these two...slid each through using the "straightest" edge they had...reset 2 more times..to get both edges straight.. Needed the edges straight, as I was going to rip a few 1-1/2" wide strips out of each board...had to drag two "extra" pieces, and rip them too.. The two extras needed thinned down to match the rest. Then cross cut one end square on each...then gang all 8 up... Used a square to line up the squared ends...clamped one end...slid the mess over to where the cut will be, and clamped to the mitre gauge.. And made the cut... Then sorted them all into blanks for the 4 legs... Would take too many clamps to do each leg as a single glue up....so, spread a decent dead of glue between each pair. Moosh them around a bit, then stack them together and clamped.. Messy...meh. Will let these sit a while, and square them up once the glue is cured. Then taper 2 faces.. Decided this would be a decent drawer front.....and.. I can rip this other one down the middle, to make the bread board ends of the top. As for that flying scrap? This is what bounced off of me....was just trying to remove that knot... Ok, that will do, for today...hang the apron up.. And close the shop. That other plank back there? Will be aprons for the table. need to figure out how long the back and sides need to be. Then find a use for the third plank Stay tuned
February 3, 20206 yr Author Popular Post About an hour and a half tonight....clamps came off the top, and the legs.... Worked on these, first...rather than use one of my "good" planes to remove the dried glue...I used the tablesaw. Set the fence to just skim the blobs off, reset the skim the other side off.. Then, squared the ends...all 4 are the same length, and 1-3/8" x 1-3/8" square. set these aside for a bit...reset the "High Tech Rip Fence" With the goal of getting 2 matching pieces. To make the bread board ends with... Was a blade's width off, reset to match the skinny one. More work for this saw....Needed to mill a tongue on the ends of the top....and a groove in the ends to match... needed a wooden plane to adjust the thickness of the tongue....easier than using the tablesaw to widen to groove a mm.... Auburn Tool Co. of New York.....No. 181, 1.25" skewed rebate plane...How is the fit, now? Close enough to get out the glue, clamps , and cauls.. need to set this mess aside.. need to use my bench. Set this over on the tablesaw...next tasks involve the bandsaw...and a few planes.. Lay out line.. Mark down from the "top" to clear the width of the aprons. Down at the foot....want a 3/4" x 3/4" square toe...Bandsaw to rough out the waste.. Rotate once, repeat... 2 tapers roughed out...will true these up til the match, with a plane or two....Might even see if that "Door Prize Plane" can do the job...at least on the final few swipes.? need to set up a jig, to clamp the legs to the bench, so I can plane the tapers smooth...need to rest up a bit, and then try the plane work. Stay tuned....
February 4, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Spent a little time in the shop, tonight...Fastened a plane stop to the bench vise... And one down at the foot... I did try the No. 62....found it better at smoother jobs..so... These 2 did most of the work, tonight...first the Jack plane... To get rid of the saw marks, burn spots....then.. Then the No.3 smoother....the 62? Maybe a final pass to clean things up....One other tip about these tapered legs... Those "T"stand for both "Taper" and Tenon.....helps to keep track of where I am... When you have a pile of these to do....don't want a taper on the wrong face... legs are tapered. Nice part about tapering the legs... Bad spots like this, soon wind up in the scrap bin. had one leg a little too fat...planes removed the extra.. also had a glue joint showing....plane that smooth...twas a busy night.. Legs are ready for mortises, can set them aside for a day or 2....need to work on this, next... Flatten the top, Lay out the leg locations, and size the aprons....at least the 2 side ones....back apron will be 1" long than the drawer front. Was pushing me Luck of the Irish..decided to stop for the night... Stay tuned...we be gaining on it..
February 4, 20206 yr How are you getting rid of the glue squeeze out without jamming up a plane? I usually wipe the excess with hot water and a rag to minimize glue blobs.
February 4, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Tablesaw. Set the rip fence to just skim the surface of the part...Carbide saw blade works better, than a plane's iron. Also makes sure the legs are square.
February 4, 20206 yr Popular Post Coming along nicely. That small mess on the floor you are talking about. meh.
February 4, 20206 yr Popular Post For wet squeeze out, I use a putty knife followed with a damp sponge. For the dried stuff, one of these carbide Bahco scrapers works well.
February 4, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Had a bit of glue creep...where parts shift a hair during the clamping....1-1/2" square legs....are now 1-3/8" square. Not a biggie. Lost half the thickness of the saw blade on the ends of the legs... For a really big messy glue up...I have either the Stanley No. 70....or, for a bit finer scrape...the Stanley No. 82....
