January 2, 20206 yr Author Popular Post While the site was done...spent a little time... Had to flatten the slats, first. Then cut for length, plane to width....and then notch to fit... And, not have any gaps showing.. Close enough? Been using a pair of planes... That little block plane had bounced off the floor, the other day,,,didn't seem to bother it. Handle on the #3 was broke when it was bought...since been glued up. Processed a couple boards for a lid, for Box#2....and even got them glued up... More work with the planes....also boards for the 4 sides of the next box... Need trimmed for length, then dovetails made...was a bit busy, today? Ya think? Close a lid, done for today... Stay tuned...
January 2, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Roh Kay, Raggy...Start time today...1500 hrs....end time 1700 hrs....Stanley #358 Mitre box to trim a few parts... Decided the ends needed planed a bit, to get them flat... One edge was a tad thicker than the other...same with the long sides.. Might as well do the lid, while I'm at it... "left side" was thicker than the right, almost a wedge shape...we have ways.... OK, laid out a few toys...after the bench was cleaned off, And dug up a few chisels.. Hooped chisel was ground to a triangle point, to get into the tight corners...Laid out a base line, or two... Stand this up in the vise, and mark a cut line... Made sure I marked which was the waste sides of the lines. Combo square to carry the lines down to the base line....Lower the blank a bit, and run a saw.. Then the chisel got busy....then sit the blank back in the vise, and fine tune the pins... Then use these to mark out the tails...cut and chop out the waste....where that fancy chisel got used...test fit? Close enough? Then repeat for corner #2... Will fine tune during the next shop time. back was getting sore...decided to sweep this mess up.. To look like this... Look a little better? Stay tuned..
January 3, 20206 yr Popular Post I was good till you started the last two pictures, clean up my mess. Really? What mess??? Did you mop the floor as well??
January 4, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Well, another short trip to the shop, today....start time was 1200 hrs....finally got back upstairs around 1415hrs, or so... More dovetails needed done.. Ran the back saw a bit... Chopped about half way...flip over, and.. Then set it up in the vise.. And did a bit of clean up...then used this thing.. To mark out the tails...then the bandsaw to make a few cuts The more, the merrier? Had a fancy chisel to use... Old Harbor Freight 1/4" chisel, ground the sides until it is a triangle shape...to better get into tight corners.. Didn't take all that long... #3 corner done, go back, repeat for #4 corner,,, Next, set things up to do a few grooves... Long sides. Had to back off the depth of cut quite a bit...also, had to keep checking which edges get a groove... FUN....Candle wax helps, too. Checked for alignment of the grooves.. Plywood for a bottom....needed trimmed for length...Stanley #358 Mitre Box made quick work....but, panel was a tad too wide..we have ways.. Finally got all the parts to fit together (like herding cats?) Whew...then spread the glue..and watch a forest of clamps grow.. Flip it up.. And move it to where I can walk past the bench....sweep the floor, again....then close up for the day.... Waiting on glue to dry a day...then clean things up, and do some hardware installs Stay tuned

January 6, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Clamps came off the box, this morning.....nothing flew apart..always a good sign Cleaned up the sides, using sanders and this Stanley #3, Type 11... Then sized the lid to match the box... Then figure out which to call the "Front" of the box.... Then decide on some hinges... I think these will do....then lay out the rest of the hardware.. 2 styles of latches, 2 styles of handles. Headless nail to chuck into a drill, to do pilot holes for them TINY screws. Maybe after Supper, I can install a few parts? Stay tuned....
January 7, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Maybe a PIP? Waiting for the stain to dry, before I shellac both boxes... So, a better look at the front.. A bit fancy? Then a view of the end.. And them hinges.. Not a whole lot of room inside, though... For scale, I laid a 6" combo square in front of the box... Might be a decent Recipe Box? Will give both boxes a few coats of Amber Shellac.....stay tuned
