March 30, 20197 yr Author Popular Post well...ramble tambled down to the shop....Seems the one end of Box #2 had split along the glue line Glued that up, after I was done chopping on the other corner.. End closest to the camera...from here, it right into the clamps, as I had one more corner to do Yep...that corner....Easy part was the dovetail saw work...had to "fire" the big backsaw, for being hard to start.. Boards a re 5/16" thick...as long as I keep the saw waxed, it works....hand does not like that handle...got to cramping up... Got these pins chopped out, used them to mark out the tails...bandsaw to cut on the waste side of the line....BANG...second cut, blade breaks Walk back upstairs, get out a "new" 3/16" blade.....bandsaw doesn't like it....made all kinds of racket Good thing I was almost done...almost.. Last tails to be chopped...New chisel? Not exactly....just been a regrind of an old H-F chisel...1/4" into a triangle profile.. So I can get into those nooks & crannies...and was using a slightly older chisel, as well.. 1/8" sash chisel, with an "Arrow" logo....anyway...last dry fit.. Seemed to fit..figures, the last set fits the best...just when I get the hang of doing these.. Time to spread some glue....may have used too much, after having to clean out the tip of the glue bottle... Once I got the split end out of the clamps, I could use those clamps....that 1 x 1? Noticed the sides wanted to bow in, in the middle.....cut a couple 1 x 1s to the eact length of the non-bowed ends...and tapped them into place, no glue ( I hope) Old saying, can never have enough clamps...sooooo, we add more clamps.. There now, that should be enough? let this mess sit a day...may try to get the lid ready.. IF I can find enough room...need to square it up, flatten it out, and size it to the box.....along with a plywood bottom that will get glued in place to the bottom of the box..haven't decided on what feet to add to the bottom of the box..yet. Stay tuned..

March 31, 20197 yr Author Good thing, too...new shed tried to stand up on it's front door......had to go back outside, and wrestle it back onto it's back feet...nothing broken, or ripped... More likely singing "Who'll stop the rain.." Has changed over to snow, right now...March going out like a lion?
March 31, 20197 yr I didn't get anything done in shop either Steve. Had to cut grass, fix the blinking motion sensor light and cook supper. Had enough, a cold one and a stogie on in order.

Ya' got that right...while at HD in the county seat, snowed so hard you couldn't see across the parking lot...town received 2"+...friend's house about 12 mile from home,,,,also 2"+. Barely covered the ground here,,,mostly rain & wet snow. Creeks are running at the tops of their banks. Water standing everywhere here at home...enough of my plights... The box #2 is progressing nicely...sorry about the BS issues.
April 1, 20197 yr Author Popular Post Alrighty...been a very busy day...and never left the property....anchors are now fixed...shed should stay put....was down on one knee, tightening the wire cable ties....next thing I know, I am rolling across the floor of the shed....muddy floor....Put the tools away from that....removed all the clamps from the glue up, and hung them up out of the way.. . 9 clamps is what it took...Cleaned the box up...a few high spots to level down, a few spots needed corrected for square...top and bottom edges all matchwhew Got out a plywood panel..set the box on it...traced around the edges.. Then cut just outside the lines...add a bead of glue to the bottom edge of the box, moosh the plywood in place Found an easy way to clamp this up, until the glue dries.. I can even fine tune the edges a bit....and also size the lid blank to the box...with a little extra.. Even got the lid flat! The finger grip part? Hmmm, a little too big....later, I cut it back a bit....After Supper, went back to the shop, kept the box in the vise, while I sanded things down...then added a couple hinges....bright brass ones, this time....Lid and box were then fine tuned for a fit....dusted off...time for that stain, again...and a PIP? Remodeled finger grip.. Hinge and corner view.....didn't feel like having that knot hole out front.. better view of the front... Good thing this IS the bottom of the box... These boxes aren't all that big....ruler says it is 7"~ across the top... Need to go and shop for feet, and handles...in Bright Brass...and maybe a coat of varnish? Stay tuned..
April 2, 20197 yr You create more from a few scraps of wood than anyone I know... Your new mantra should be "no scrap left behind!" These will hold a lot of M&M's or Reese's Pieces...just saying.
April 2, 20197 yr Author Popular Post Got a couple of brushes today, and a package of "brass" letters that just stick on....wire wheeled the blacken brass handles until they shine...letters are one Box #1...waiting on varnish to dry on both boxes....then the feet and handles will get installed on Box#2....and it's letters..... Kick back nailed me again trying to rip a few more things strips...pine push stick took most of the damage,,,corner of it poked a small hole in the palm of the hand.. Got enough to make a bottom for a tray/tote.. 5 pieces. Not all that wide.. Or long.. Needed to joint the edges to do a glue up... Set them all on the saw as I went along....even had a few pieces for the sides and ends.. Even found a wider one, to make a carry handle out of.. Edges looked good...run a bead of glue, then moosh a strip into the glue a bit, repeat as needed...then a few clamps, and cauls.. Cauls are 2 pieces of pine..."top" and.. Bottom...to keep things flat....letting this and the varnished boxes sit a while, until things dry. Tote corners will be dovetailed together...tote handle will be as well...then nail the bottom panel to the frame...no glue. need to drill and shape a hand hold in the handle... Stay tuned...

Not good Steven...is the blade dull? Is it 40T or less? Do you still have the "zero clearance sheet" in place? If so, and not covering the full width/length of the rip, maybe it's causing a pinch. If so, can you make some type of splitter? Glad you're no worse for the wear. Pretty nice planing on the faces...look pretty smooth considering how shiny they appear.

Dave, we use two antennas, one aimed at Milwaukee, the other at Chicago. 92 channels, who needs cable or satellite?
April 3, 20197 yr Author Popular Post Roh-Kay, Raggy....Varnish is dry... Means I can get the rest of the stuff on #2 Box...Needed pilot holes drilled... Feet installed.. Lettering applied on both boxes... Handles are all in place.. Lids came out decently.. Boss gets her pick of the two....the other will go to either my Daughter's place, or a friend of the Boss's place. These need rubbed down, and maybe a second coat of varnish....while I work on the Tote.. Stay tuned

April 5, 20197 yr Author Popular Post Ok...still have a pile of scraps... Tray blank is out of the clamps. had an issue with squareness... One long edge was straight, the other had a slight curve to it...made it rough to square the ends... Then had issues with the four side pieces... had to joint the four, flip two end for end, and joint again.. Couple of them needed face-planed, too...Then start on that finger thing, again.. bandsaw doing most of the work...Butcher Sash chisel set the width, wider chisel to clean up.. getting there... Two done...I also got a blank for a handle shaped... Not sure if I'll use grooves for a grip, or just finger holes.... getting a bit "choppy", now...battery was running low so... I'll save this end for the next trip to the shop. Will also do a couple 1/2 laps...as this will get a couple "dividers"...6 compartments. Stay tuned..

April 7, 20197 yr Author Popular Post A little late-night fun, last night...after a nap from the Honey-do list.... Both dividers were way to thick...we have ways of thinning things down..marked the handle blank for two notches...halflaps Then marked the dividers, and notched them to fit.. Then stood this mess up, onto the end piece, and marked for the finger joints....ends were easy to saw out.. But the handle's mortises were chopped. Chisel has an arrow for a logo...Butcher Sash chisel.. the a dry fit, to see how much work needs to be done... eeehhhhh, might need a wee bit more work.. Stay tuned
