November 27, 20187 yr Popular Post Finished up my sister and brother-in-law's request. Wall mounted box. 3/8" red oak. Over measurements approximately 7.5" wide x 6.5" deep x 10" tall. Piano hinge and key lock. Golden oak stain and satin wipe on poly. Sometimes these little boxes are more difficult than the larger ones.

We tend to fool ourselves by thinking that it's just a little box, I can knock that out in no time flat. Then pride in your work steps in and you end up making something that's more than " just a little box". Nice work Lew. Edited November 28, 20187 yr by DuckSoup
November 28, 20187 yr Wonderful job Lew, as Bob said, those "little" things do take time, the miters are superb, you have your tools tuned so well! I had to do a double take on the first image, the prayer box looked as big as your Bridgwood planer! I thought at first, wow, they got a lot of prayers to offer!!! Thanks for sharing Lew, excellent work.
November 28, 20187 yr Author Popular Post @John Morris Thank You! The miters were a story in themselves. My old saw (contractor style) has worn trunnions. I had to make a special jig to pull the blade parallel to the miter slot when doing anything over about 15°. @DuckSoup Thank you! Sad part about this is that they could have purchased one for $33. The hinge and lock cost that much when the shipping was added.
November 28, 20187 yr Popular Post I made one about a year ago and used a hasp to lock it. How does that key lock mount? I didn't want to take a chance and mess up.
November 28, 20187 yr Popular Post Really nice, Lew. 1 hour ago, lew said: Sad part about this is that they could have purchased one for $33. The hinge and lock cost that much when the shipping was added. But it wouldn't be done by Lew and, not as nice.

Harry, I used this one from Woodcraft- I wish it would have been shorter (made for up to 3/4" stock). It sticks down inside a little bit farther than I wanted. My original thought was to get the metal "finger" to engage in a small slot on the inside of the front. Because the lid was slanted, I had to bend and amputate a portion of the finger so it would fit. At that point, I realized my talent for precise slot location wasn't going to hack it. I glued a small wooden stop/catch on the inside to engage the finger. Used double sided sticky tape to position the block until I found the correct location to hold the lid down and still allowed the key to turn easily.

November 28, 20187 yr see, that's a question i'd ask before i started sourcing lumber? I can pray directly to God, whenever I want or need to. I don't need to find a scrap of paper, and then a pencil, and then put it in writing and then deposit in some box far away. i'm guessing that my discussion of theology would last longer than it would take to just make the box.

November 28, 20187 yr Nicely done Lew. Meticulous detail on a "simple" box makes the craftsmanship stand out even more so. You checked all the boxes (no pun intended).
November 29, 20187 yr Thanks for the info Lew. Maybe next time I'll get one and play with it. I like the idea of using the strip of wood for the catch!
November 29, 20187 yr Popular Post Very nice job on that box! A number of years ago I made 2 offering boxes for the back of the church for donations and for prayer cards of requests. They have held up well. I also made a wall box similar to yours for the church office for the different ministry leaders to drop off payments for events or attendance cards and such. The tall boxes have 2 compartments with the top one with a lock for the donations and the bottom section for supplies of cards and other items. Edited November 29, 20187 yr by Allen Worsham
November 29, 20187 yr Author Popular Post @Allen Worsham Thank You! Those pieces are beautiful and I especially like the slanted tops. Several years ago my brother-in-law had me make something similar for their collection bag storage. Wish mine were designed as nicely as yours.
November 29, 20187 yr All and I mean all of you your work exemplies the talent God gave you. The reason for locks is that churches are often left open and unattended to allow anyone to pray. Unfortunately that also allows anyone to steal.
