Finished painting the new mailbox. It'll go up today. The old one had been knocked off so many it couldn't be straightened any more. It would seem a simple matter but it had to be decorated with specific characters. My lettering ability has severely diminished over the years.

I've been working on the "Christmas Shoe Box" cars. Got those finished and delivered last week. Fun project and for a good cause. Made close to 100 this year!

Well, I have this little end table I'm finishing. It took me almost three years to build it, maybe less to finish it. This was a plan in the Wood Nov. 2015 issue. I started it when that issue came out

I just delivered a primitive lamp stand for a lady in our bible study.  She gave me a picture of one that her sister had and asked me to duplicate it.   It was a porch post that they cut off.  Here’s

Lew,

I gave up after the fifth mailbox, and post were knocked off.

I just put the address number on the new box with those stick on numbers.

Some years it takes waiting until the spring thaw to find the missing mailbox, and broke off post.

One year it was buried in the snow 50+ feet down the ditch from where it belongs.

They refuse to do so.

I live on a state highway, and they say entering/exiting creates a safety hazard.

I was given all kinds of excuses too...

then it became a chess game...

months later - the mail is delivered to the door...

where do the deliver your packages to???

Our driveway is at the beginning of a turn lane to a county road.

It's the only place the state would allow it to be put when they widened the state highway.

If the package will fit into the mailbox they put it there, if not we get a notice to pick it up at the PO.

At least the driveway entrance/exit is directly across from a crossover separating E/W traffic flow so we can go either way without having to first go the wrong way and then crossover.

We live within the borough, narrow street, first house after a turn. They get my mailbox but I get their expensive, fancy multipurpose mirrors

I managed to build the doors for my utility building and get them installed. Wasn't thinking much about photos, but I will take photos of the installed new doors as soon as I can. The old doors were assembled using screws.  I was able to disassemble them and save most of the plywood. The rest of the wood was cut for use as firewood in the shop.

Thank you all for the comforting words, I know there are quite a few folks here who have been through these events as we get older, we start to see the other older ones in our circles leave us. I lost a good part of my immediate family tragically about 24 years ago leaving behind myself and mom and dad (only ones left), seemed a lifetime ago, and it's been really quiet since, very calm, I think the man decided "ok, this family done had enough, we'll let em rest for awhile". But now as I look around, mom's pretty old, dad's pretty old, so things may start to get interesting again. Mom and dad have been apart since I was a toddler, and since they've gotten older, I've had to do a little dance to keep up with both of them having their own issues and problems and doc appts. and this and that. Dad don't drive anymore so I need to drive up the mountain and get him off of there and take him down shopping for food and doc appts. and what not, and take him back up and make sure he's ok. Mom needs attention too, and it all gets a tad overwhelming. Got a little story that snapped me out of my grumpiness and slapped me in the face.

I went up the mountain on Friday to retrieve my pops, and bring him back down for a doc appt and food shopping. I'm tired, after dealing with my aunt passing, and I'm a little grumpy but holding it back well, putting on a great show for Dad, after all, he put up with my BS for years when I was younger, gave me shelter, gave me food, gave me love, and gave me friendship when I was at my wildest, he was there all the way to the point I joined the ARMY and got my s!#t squared away. So after the doc appt I take Dad to the grocery store and we are shopping for his inventory, he's 85 and as you can imagine, as an 85 year old bachelor, we spent a lot of time in the TV dinner department (I've tried to get him to eat healthier, but at his age and with his health issues it's good he's even eating anything), as we are standing there looking at the inventory of TV dinners, this big man came wheeling his cart by, basket full of TV dinners, he was in impressive size and in his 60's, and he smiled at both of us, and he looked at us both kind of nice, with warmth, and he passed us about 10 feet away and he turned back with a smile and looked at me and asked "you're here shopping with Dad?" I said "yes sir I am" with a smile, and he launched into a story of his own dad he used to take shopping and how much he missed him, his father passed away recently, and he stated "I used to love shopping with my Dad, I miss it a whole lot, I loved being with him and hanging out, enjoy your Dad while you have him", I stated thank you sir, I will and have a wonderful day. It didn't hit me till I got in the car what just happened. An angel of comfort was sent to me and shake me up and out, and to get back in the game with my folks, and to enjoy and appreciate their presence. And I will, and I am. Me and Dad left an hour later with about 30 TV dinners, a 2.5 gallon jug of ice cream, cereal boxes, oats, bread, and about 10 big bottles of coke, that should all last him about 4 weeks, when I'll run up and pick him up again, and enjoy a day with my Dad.

Friday on the way back up the mountain with his groceries in tow, we had a great talk, we even talked man to man pragmatically about end of life wishes, and he was completely open and fine with it all, and we joked around and we also had a chance to talk about Aunt and memories with her. All is well.

Sorry for the long winded post, back to woodworking now!

John, doing for them does get tedious at times and is nothing to be ashamed of.  It just does.  The important part is the fact that you are doing and not giving up.  Been there and loving the memories.
