October 10, 20187 yr Popular Post Monday, I posted that I’m building a farmhouse table. Gene Howe requested that I keep y’all posted on the progress so here it is. The top is flat on both sides and I have made the skirt and stretchers. BTW, the stretchers are done but on in this picture. Everything is mortised and tenoned and I had to increase my mortising skills. The legs are 5” square and my mortifying machine only raises to 4 1/2” so I cut the mortises with a plunge router and chilled the ends. Speaking of legs, they were purchased and on leg was an 1/8” out of square So the mortise and tenon was “interesting”.
October 10, 20187 yr Very nice Ron. That is one beast of a table. I hope you have someone close to help you maneuver it?

October 10, 20187 yr after looking at the table.. I would put no less than four ''8's'' on the short side and seven on the long side.. I just wouldn't....

Great minds think alike. That’s what I had in mind. I’m also consisting adding a couple of braces across the skirt with 1 “8” in the middle

I wouldn't put an ''8'' in the middle... mere mortals won't be able to pick that table up so when it gets moved it will be shove/pushed/drug around which will be tough on the apron/leg joints so here's something you might want to consider... October 11, 20187 yr Hey Ron. Only 1/8th out of square? You just can't find quality like that everywhere. LOL Thanks for posting, this is going t be fun to watch.

I have seen brackets like the top picture but not the bottom picture. Are the wood brackets bought or homemade?
October 11, 20187 yr Both styles of bracing (brackets) have been around for a long time and either will work just fine on this.
October 11, 20187 yr the homemade version should have a key cut into it to receive the corner of the leg... your dado blade set over to 45° is just the ticket for this and the key way helps w/ fastening the bracket to the leg... not only do those brackets help the corner junction strength immensely they work hard at keeping the leg from getting ''laid over''when the table is slid around... note... use modified truss headed (see pic) or pan head screws w/washers to screw the brace in... if you use a full threaded screw, drill a clearance hole for it in the bracket... FH screws tend to split the wood when put under duress... think splitting wedge... instead of lagging the leg I use GRK or RSS structural screws... (4th picture)... you get strength w/o the risk of splitting the leg... Edited October 11, 20187 yr by Stick486
