June 30, 20187 yr Popular Post Well...yard sales today were a bust......Was told by the Boss we could not go to Menard's today, to buy lumber...but..we could try at Lowes here in town....Yeah..Riiight.. Shopping list said I needed 1 x 10s and 1 x 8x...and 1 x 2s.....Showed the Boss the prices Lowes wanted....STICKER SHOCK! Lowes 1 x 2s? I could buy 3 at the price they wanted for ONE, and is was 2' shorter, at that! Got to looking through the racks.....found some glued up Pine panels....looking like they used to be part of a much longer panel...price was a bit better....and I didn't have to do any glue ups of my own.... Two panels for the sides. 3/4" x 12" x 36", and a panel for the top..3/4" x 16" x 48" Picked through, and found four of the best 1 x 2 x 6' boards they had, to build webframes with. Also dug around and found the best 1 x 3 x 6' in the rack.... Will go to Menard's at a later date, and get the parts for the drawers, and a plywood back. Spent $42 at Lowes...for 8 boards...sheesh. Before I can get anything done IN the shop, I need to clear the bench... Hmm....now you see them ( see anything you can ID?) Look quick.... NOW I can do a bit of work, here....need to get the mitersaw dug out, and ready.. And swing it back to 90 degrees...have a bunch of parts to make ( hope I bought enough 1 x 2s..) The plastic case? Somewhere in the shop..there are a few other of these bits....need to round them up and into the case...set of 25. Plan is to build 4 webframes...then sliding dovetails to join the frames to the sides. Then add a back and the face frame. Then see about a trip to Menard's for drawer parts. it is a start...stay tuned.

June 30, 20187 yr Author Got to thinking...decided a 12" deep chest of drawers would be to shallow.....will be adding a strip about 3" wide. Looks like I do a glue-up of the sides, after all.... Will see how much "trouble" I can get into, today......
June 30, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Had to stop..for lunch...and pick the glue off me fingers... Cut the 1 x 3 in half.... One section went here....1 x 3 is a tad thicker than the panel...we have ways.. Second half went here....then this mess was set aside with the first one...have more work for the Stanley Mitersaw to do.. Had four 1 x 2 x 6' boards....needed eight @ 25" long. Front and backs of the webframes. Which didn't leave a whole lot left over.. To get eight pieces @ 12-1/2" long....without the knots....gang cut a few.. Then went through the "stash" to find enough scraps that were long enough AND wide enough..... Had to use a couple chunks od Ash, too....one or two needed cut for width, all needed planed down.. We have ways....then laid out for a few tenons.. Had to set up Mitersaw #2.. Once I cleaned it off....set up the depth stops..again...then make a bunch of shoulder cuts.. Bandsaw to make the cheek cuts...had one done for this picture.... Yep, even with having to hand-crank the Bandsaw to start it.. Have to clean the shop stool off... Can't say I wasn't making sawdust... Maybe later today, I can get out the toys, and chop a few mortises? Open ended ones.... Stay tuned
July 1, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Was a bit too warm yesterday.....cramps were setting in. Now have Gatorade in the system....Lunch is settling in...may head to the shop in a bit.... IF I can get out of this chair.....stay tuned..

July 2, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Back into mine..now.....was about ready to start throwing things in the shop....closed it down at 6pm. Gloves..so I don't get cut on sharp, pointy objects Set up to do mortises.. Why the backsaw? Well, after I aly out the mortise.. The backsaw makes a couple angled cuts.. There was also about 5-6 "pulls" backwards with the end of the saw, then.. Chop a hole at the far end..... Turn the chisel around, and pop the waste out.....enough to do a dry fit.. Have to remember to mark both parts, so I can put these back in the same spot.. Something like this.....I get all four mortises done for one frame...time for glue and clamps, and.. two nails. Scrap iron is to curl any points that come through, back up into the wood...set one aside.. Actually, there are 2 frames in this picture...while I worked on #3....noticed these two were warped a bit...thought I could clamp them back to flat... SNAP! #$#@#$#@#$!! OK. One tenon snapped off. Was NOT in the mood to remake a part...got out more toys.. Jack plane to "level the playing field", a pilot hole drill, a countersink drill, and a small screwdriver....hammer was a "Just in case of.." Might as well do both frames. C clamp to keep things from moving around, pilot hole for a 3" long #6 screw. Countersink to get things flush...had to hold these back from the edge, as a 1/2" dovetail bit will be going along the ends. Got all 8 corners done, was going the do the four on frame #3...no more bullets, er ..screws, Hung #3 out of the way..cleaned the floor up, and called it a day....Maybe..Tuesday, I can get #4 done? Then run the router a bit. Wasn't that great of a day.....despite the fan set on "HIGH" still too warm in the shop... Stay tuned...the cussing has begun..
July 3, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Need to get this Project done....soon. Got the fourth frame built today....and ganged it up with the other three. Then planed and beltsanded the sides until thel match Well..almost, anyway..got it clamped to the side of the bench for a reason... Time for that corded thingy, again. Called a router..right? Needed to change it to a dovetail bit, and add that fence... At least for the first cuts. The idea is to cut along the outside edges of the stack.. Make a pass down each side.. About like this. Then slide the fence a bit, for the second cuts... Then slide the fence until the bit is as centered as I can get it..and make the last cut.. Had to add an extra clamp, too. Tomorrow, I can flip this over, and repeat for the other end. Then maybe set up to mill the side panels? Need to add the kickers to the frames. Couldn't add them until after the milling was done. Once these are done, I can clear the bench and work on the side panels a bit.... Stay tuned....
July 3, 20187 yr "wood costs how much?!" yeah, lumber is not free, it costs money. likely way more than you think it should. so, no, having me spend 10 hours on something for you, and you paying me less than the cost of the lumber isn't going to fly unless i like you. a lot.
July 4, 20187 yr Author Well, when it for a Grandson, so he won't just toss his clothes all over his bedroom.....yeah...we can make do..... Got a bit done today.. Not pretty, but where these are going, doesn't matter....side these four aside for a while...got the panels out of the clamps.. Add-ons were thicker than the panels.. Hmmm, we have ways....set one panel aside, for now....and got out Old Number 8.. Got the worst off of this side...flipped the panel over....arms were getting tired, switched panels a bit.. No. 7c and the No.4....had a bit of tear-out on one end...decided to make that the bottom. Got out two cut-offs, to "stand-in" for a frame and it's kicker.... Need a space in the top, for the corner glue blocks....Large square to layout the four frame locations.. Going with 1 x 8 drawer fronts...spacings will be right at 7"...Got to the bottom....had a bit extra. Used 5" from the bottom of the drawer to the bottom of the foot Apparently, can used as a model, had a dent in it....used two Vintage saws.. Both B&Ds One might be a tad newer than the other....All metal one was for the straight cuts And the green plastic one for the curves.. Will fine tune that curve, before I trace this onto the other panel....Time for a straight edge.. More of an over-sized speed square. Needed to know the center point on the sockets I need to mill for the sliding dovetails. Also needed to know how far from the edge of the router's base the center of the bit is.. Then make a mark for the guide.. And set up the guide...checked with a square.. Clamps to hold the guide in place, and the panel in place...clamps are hooked onto the side of the bench.. One clamp, check with the square, then add the second one and make sure things didn't move....Get the router started up..push through, pushing against the guide at the same time....then pull back through to clean things out.. With any luck, cut will be in the center....move things down a bit, reset the guide.. And make the next cut....managed to get things about ready for the third cut...was getting a bit worn out....cleaned the shop's floor, and closed up for the day... And this wasn't even all of the stuff....what a pile of..... Maybe tomorrow, I can get a little bit done? Stay tuned...
July 5, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Work was halted in the shop...Uncle Charles (Horse) was paying a visit.....yeah, that kind of a day Managed to get the last two sockets on side 1 done.... I needed this light...camera hates it....got the #78 out.. Once I got the side clamped up.. Wards #78...something to pick stuck shavings out with, and a scrap of plywood to check depth. Even use that to set the depth stop with Made a mess on the floor...thumb was getting sore, too.. Between the #78 and the router....finally got this done.. Cleaned the floor...then promptly made a new mess.. Because the second side needed flattened out....4 planes...a #4 a #5 (cambered jack) a #7c...and i tried the #8..again.. Then laid the first side on top of this side.. Decided to trim the "top" of the second side...tear out was on that end...marked this for the saw...and marked the other end.. Marked where the dovetail sockets were.. Set up the speed square to trim the end.. SKIL 6" saw. Saw follows to guide.. usually gets a decent straight cut...green sabresaw was next.. Figure I can gang the sides up, and beltsander these to match each other.... Had a little issue with one edge not square...was affecting layouts on the dovetail sockets....Finally just measured from the ends... Got close enough...Also ran the 78 on this panel, as well. will let these two sit a day.. Cleaned up the mess one more time, and called it a day...calves were getting crampy....tomorrow, I can fit the top for length...the leftover from that will get resawn into kickers...Then MAYBE a little assembly work? We'll see...stay tuned Edited July 5, 20187 yr by steven newman
July 5, 20187 yr Steven I have a suggestion and it is something I do when I am using a dovetail bit... Since the dovetail bit is more expensive than a straight bit I first run a straight bit where the dovetail will be made...The straight bit will be the width of the narrow part of the dove tail cut. This way I am taking lots of the cutting off the dovetail bit and making it last longer. But I do use a flat guide attached to my router so I know both bits will be cutting in the same spot.
July 5, 20187 yr Author Last straight bit I tried this way....snapped off...No issues with the CMT bit...so far.....
July 6, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Power outage for a few hours today....put a crimp in shop work....other than a dry fit... If'n you be taller than 5'10", that bar clamp will nail ya..
