March 2, 20188 yr Popular Post Today I’m finishing up the floating shelves. All the holes are drilled for the brackets to slide into the shelf. I left a couple of them up so you could see how they go in. The brackets are predrilled for the stud location so they will be mounted on the wall and slide the shelf in and the there is a screw the goes into the bottom and lines up with a hole in the rods the keep the shelf in place. Now it is finish sanding and putting a clear finish on. So what’s on your weekend agenda? Share your projects and pictures of your weekend plans. Whatever you do, have fun and be safe.
March 2, 20188 yr Not sure what I'll get into. Right now we are experiencing pretty gusty conditions. Lots of power outages, trees down. Also waiting for the appliance repair guy to show up and fix the washing machine.

Also waiting for the appliance repair guy to show up and fix the washing machine. We have had almost 19” of rain the month of February. I was talking to the golf course superintendent that is about a mile from my house and that is what he has recorded at the course. It is suppose to be dry here till Monday and then rain again. Can’t walk in the yard without burying up.
March 2, 20188 yr Popular Post We have two of these same topics going today. Can they be combined? Friday AM I completed the two nightstands by adding felt to the bottoms of the legs and setting them in place. The Mrs. wanted the lower parts painted and then considering painting and staining the tops, settled for staining them to match the floor in the bedroom. I actually think they look pretty nice. I have started a second set for the other upstairs bedroom, these will be made from red oak and stained. Both sets are made from lumber harvested in our yard, SYP and red oak. After looking at a few hundred pictures of nightstands and end tables on Pinterest, I drew up these plans to fit the space available. I think it was last Sunday when our daughter called and asked if I could do a quick project for her to give as a gift on Saturday - tomorrow. I am on track to having that completed for her. Waiting for some silicon caulk to dry on it right now before I "button it up" and call it done. I will post up a pic of that when I consider it done, but here is some of the design work.
March 2, 20188 yr Popular Post Thanks Lew & Stick. It was almost a perfect match! When I tested it on the oak it came out way to brown - but on this SYP it amazed me. It darkened just a bit when I put the shellac and poly on, but it is still very close. And after I looked at the pic, I realized how close the match was in the blanket chest/toy box sitting off to the left. That was a project my son & I made for our daughter's Christmas in about 1995, IIRC. That was built from NYW plans and the lumber was recycled from some heavy plank pallets I salvaged from a John Deere construction equip. dealer and floored with 1/4" cedar closet planks. James would have been about 7 or 8 when we did that project. That would have put Elizabeth at about 4 or 5 and she has said she does not want the lid to be replaced or refinished, she wants it left "as-is". I expect she will take it with her when she gets a large enough place of her own. Edited March 2, 20188 yr by Cal
March 2, 20188 yr @Cal, combining the two would be my job but I haven't a clue as to how to get it done. Maybe @Ron Dudelston or @John Morris knows how. Hint, hint.

March 2, 20188 yr Going to wrap up all that I can (waiting on some hardware) for my under extension table storage. Then I am going to start a new tool cabinet for my planer and rigid spindle/belt sander.

March 2, 20188 yr Working on getting finish on shelves for consignment shop. Painted the bottom of shelves white to reflect more light onto product. Plan to spray poly this afternoon. Got the BOC bowls ready to finish and may get to that also today. Got a range meeting tomorrow .
March 2, 20188 yr Not much on the agenda...can't seem to shake the cough portion of this cold...frustrating, annoying and tiring. May try to do some yard clean-up; wife's Jeep needs oil/filter changed & serviced. Need to start doing some hands-on "design" and layout work for my oldest grandson's Pinewood Derby Racer...haven't done one of these for over 57 years. Apparently the "sport" has changed a bit based on You-tube research. @John Moody...what size screws/lag bolts do you use to hold those brackets to the wall? Just curious. @Cal....night stands turned out VERY nice. Toy-box is pretty cool too and obviously is becoming a family heirloom. I assume the gift you're making is going to be etched into some form of glass(ware)?
March 2, 20188 yr Popular Post House sitting/puppy-sitting until tomorrow night, when the Boss gets back home. tried a bit of shop time...did not start out too well.. Guess what fell to the floor..handle first.....hmm, since it was going to be an "ugly day" Might as well use an "Ugly " saw....film at 2300 hrs...

March 3, 20188 yr Popular Post @Grandpadave52 - you were kinda sorta correct... it did involve etching some glass. A mirror actually, which measures 11" x 14". The frame was made from red oak, the mirror is surface etched. It is a gift for a little girl named Daisy...
March 3, 20188 yr @Cal, that's really nice. That 2 piece frame and finish really sets off that etched mirror. Daisy will love it. How does one etch a mirror?
March 3, 20188 yr @Cal...how cool...very appropriate for that young lady. I like the frame & finish...Arts & Craft era look
