How does one etch a mirror?

Gene, the process that I use is to create a vinyl decal that will be the stencil.    I have a vinyl cutter and use Adobe Illustrator to create/edit designs to be used.  Using the stencil I then sandblast the glass or mirror.  With mirrors the design can be done either on the surface of the mirror, or reversed and etched on the back side and painted.

I thought that I had posted up a walk through of the process, but that must have been on the Wood site a few years ago.  If you (or others) may be interested I can get up some pics and a step by step.  I actually have several "wedding mirrors" to do right now.  Most of the time spent on these projects are at the computer doing the design work.

Here are a couple pics of mirrors showing the difference between surface etched and back etched and painted.

The largest project I have done was a glass door for a gun cabinet.  The smallest are some 4 oz. juice glasses so far.

Those are really handsome, Cal. Thanks for the explanation. I'd be interested in seeing a walk through of your process.

Which brand of cutter do you use?

Edited by Gene Howe

Thanks Gene, I will start doing one up.

The cutter that I have is a US Cutter model SC.  While it is a "value cutter", it is not their cheapest.  I have been real happy with it - it has paid for itself several times over.  I have really "cut back" on my outside work with it now, but still keep it busy.

Now, the AI design program?  That has a heap of learning curve to it, and I still learn stuff with just about every new project I take on.

Thanks, Cal. Looking forward to your tutorial.

Count me in too, always wondered how that is done.

Herb

great news:  the guy who wanted my cherry bowl got it and loves it.  and i got a nice check in return.

and.... i mentioned doing a bandsaw box, so now he wants one of those too, his last name initial is the shape.  "W" in this case.  so i'm on the hunt for a good looking font.  might even fill it full of M&Ms when i send it.  i'll tell him those are actually W&Ws, you just have to turn them around a bit.

it'll be cherry too, with a Wenge accent.

i'll start on this this coming week.  already confirmed that i have the lumber in hand.

You could fill it with the blue ones and tell him they are double"V"'s.

just saying,

Can't wait to see that one, DAB. The W&Ws sound like a hoot, too.
