Keith, are those dead trees any good for lumber?

Herb

As far as I know, yes.   For a few years there was a quarantine against moving logs across county lines.   So the lumber mills stopped taking it.  Thanks to idiots, it did not do any good and within a couple of years it was in all counties of Ohio so I think the dropped that.

On their own, EAB will only move a mile or two in a year.   But it's spread from the initial port of entry, Detroit, much faster than that.    I lost both ash in my new yard and had two in the old yard that I had treated, but will probably succumb if the new owner doesn't keep it up.  In one year:

i know my ash would make good lumber if they were properly sliced, stickered and dried.   I honestly haven't tried to get anyone here.   There are all kinds of restrictions on fire-wood and ash moving across county lines, etc.

Never again...will I use a nasal spray.....burnt out the inside of me nose ( and THAT is a lot  to burn..) Played Phone tag all day today......retirement pay things needed to be fixed.    Finally got a wee bit of time for the shop...

Tipped the case backwards, so I could work on it better..

This way I could reach these three plugs, without having to kneel on the floor.....got out two tools to trim with...

Bevel down chisel, and something to "tap" it with.....then sand everything smooth as I could, and add a coat  of shellac...

Just got back home.   Spent just over $12 for 15bf of Ash.    All 4/4 x 6" w.....average 5' long.    10' was a bit too long for the van, anyway.

Going to let them sit and get warmed up a while ( me tooo) before I start using them....

Stay tuned....

Very good price...most around here runs about $1.50-$2.00 bd ft depending on how much you buy. One guy has CL ads at ~$1.25 bd/ft in quantities of 200 bd/ft+; usually 7/8" thickness but sometimes 1"

Wow...$.80 a bf ain't half bad. Wish it grew and died out here.

You been holding out on us...never seen this unit before or those two bits for that matter...I need to get out more:P I've got one very similar to it.

Nice touch on the cove even if you had to use electricity to do it.:D

Lower unit turned out very nice. Looking forward to seeing where you go on the upper.

I wish I had your get-up-and-go, Steven! But I DO procrastinate rather well! :D

Somedays, my "Get-up-and-go"   has gone up and went......

Today's little shoptime:     Hauled one plank to the shop this morning.   Crosscut it to length.    Set up the bandsaw to rip right down(almost:rolleyes:) the center...Was a bit too wavy....blade was tracking the grain, NOT the line... reset, and this time I followed the lines...almost.    Clamped one into the legvise

5a637b5a89704_jointerwork1.jpg.748c6d6fa9a7f9577b9d77186fd464ed.jpg

That big wooden plane is my jointer, for today.   Got both edges of this board jointed, then moved to a wider board..

5a637bce504fe_widerboard.jpg.91bd05bdc069acfe6f20f64b5e2acaee.jpg

Checked to make sure the gap-osis is gone..

no-gap.jpg.66f1bcf0730c1051e30fa8098e6c2600.jpg

Then spread some glue, and add a few clamps..

5a637c73d5d17_clampedup1.jpg.37265d2a0d9a5b3b816a32a7ddc146cd.jpg

One board is a hair thicker than the other....can be planed smooth, once the glue has cured...set this one aside, and repeat

5a637d1245c0a_benchclampjig.jpg.453ba3f03cbfa8090134514e97ef59ea.jpg

Added a piece to the rest....to help keep the board in place.  Finally got all the edges jointed for the second side

5a637d75e0aa5_glueup2.jpg.67e374ae22f85a2de67eb91e0dd16e7c.jpg

Will let this sit awhile......need to lay out for shelves, and see about a top.   Maybe tomorrow, I can clean these two panels up, and get them ready.

Shelves MAY get sliding dovetail joints.....not sure about the top, yet.   Once the top and shelves are installed, I can figure out how to build the door

Stay tuned..

This may get a bit long-winded....even more than I am, at the moment.    Spent a bit of time in the shop today....needing to get two bookcase sides S4S.

Had a few edges that weren't quite lined up....we have ways..

5a65298c49832_StanleyScraperplane.jpg.5438d88019362176c6ba0c380d59a453.jpg

Cuts on the pull stroke, this time.

shavings.jpg.1a2f371a0b38470db658aba661153261.jpg

Can also be push along.    Took that ridge right down.    I had some work for two other planes..

5a652a3021f93_twoplanes.jpg.159ac22211e7d212c74a8faa3e4511db.jpg

Trying to get one of thses case sides flat and square...this one was curved a bit..

5a652a87bf25f_jointerwork.jpg.38e3c3d0a3908acf8d80a4f299fd9e98.jpg

Finally got  this jointed straight, according to the steel straightedge.   Decided to set this on the other plank, and see how much needed trimmed down..

5a652b03cd3a8_twoplanks.jpg.d4e8adb866c427c762d01f7b4d32c2e3.jpg

Well..anyway, marked this out, and trimmed it down.    As you can see, there are a few dovetail sockets showing

5a652b70263ce_dovetailsocket1.jpg.95d6c6eb179a04717a9eef3c327670c8.jpg

Something like this?   Laid out three such sockets, and milled those..

5a652bbf58024_threesockets.jpg.5ff77c7939df9888459cd8f82abac1fa.jpg

Trimmed the second plank down, and worked it over a bit..

5a652c09063e4_faceplaned.jpg.f18c09ff1ef2a22f9119eafdebf20fdc.jpg

Until it was also S4S.   Then milled three sockets...AFTER I made SURE I was setting up on the correct side of the plank....had to set the fence a little differently, on one cut...

backwards.jpg.a1f032f38250e52c8f808013cfbfa14b.jpg

Backwards?   Maybe, but I did have to PULL the router through, instead of PUSH.    Once all the sockets were done, I could change fence types

5a652d080e4a4_newfence.jpg.a5c9296366b996413fbcba2232d9c503.jpg

And set up to cut "pins" to slide into the sockets....decided to pause....and work on a rebate, or two, as these ends will take a lot of work..

5a652d751615a_pinends.jpg.4264e3cf4e28dc44e8a2d3be25b82953.jpg

Leave these for later.   Set up a handplane..

5a652dd37d181_Stanley45.jpg.2a2a45e3cb29ce944defa5d2bed32e4f.jpg

That be a #17 cutter.   Everything is set up to mill a rebate to house a 1/4" plywood back....and have it deep enough  the edges will be hidden..

5a652e4cd0e83_rebate1.jpg.48dde81c3be9db28c512944e651dba28.jpg

Something like this?   I had a scrap of the plywood handy, to check the depth..

5a652eaa2f3d0_plywoodscrap.jpg.8dd485b6fdde0049acf8a8b8b7a8f9fd.jpg

Got one side done, and double checked a couple times, BEFORE I started to mill a rebate on the other panel....

5a652f11d072c_rebate2.jpg.15d7de8db62239c32168df3dc6dbca66.jpg

This panel was a hair thinner..had to re-adjust the fence on the 45.    White blob is a candle, that I rub plane soles with.

Had to keep sweeping the floor..

5a652fae257c0_messyfloor.jpg.70a707f44bd38831f12b432b5c81a50b.jpg

About this time, decided I had enough fun for one day.    Almost needed to turn a fan on....I swept the floor, turned off the worklight, and called it a day....

Maybe next time, I can get the shelves done, and installed?   Stay tuned

5a667c24992e0_setup.jpg.ead4e2461f4cbebb5327ebac32d557b6.jpg

5a667cad4cc40_endsdone.jpg.08973754e71f937e018a5bf3129900f3.jpg

Ran the router a bit more, got all the ends done....Then the hammer came out..

installed.jpg.9d47156ea8b6b9d015fbd1f78de5a317.jpg

No glue involved, just a press fit.   Still need to cut and install 2" wide fillers in the back of the shelves...

5a667d7b036e3_backview.jpg.d6a106361743cc2c9834692221938c9b.jpg

But, I can "handcut" the pins for these.    Need to do a glue-up for a top....cut a few scraps to attach the bookcase to the lower case.

Maybe work on the door by Friday?

I think this will do it, for one day..stay tuned..

Steve, I wish I had the patience to do what you do so well.

Just takes a wee bit of practice, is all.     I have plenty of time, anymore.

Decided to get a little bit done, this morning, BEFORE Lunch..hauled a board to the shop.    Squared one end.    made a mark 26" from that end, and made a crosscut.     Turned the board end for end, marked 26" from the cut end.....came out just before a huge knot.....lopped the knot off.   Laid the two blanks side by side, to see how they will look

5a676abd0d74c_twoblanks.jpg.c7aa407ad84a49005c174f386274b8d9.jpg

Not too bad.....had a few gaps along the edges

gappy.jpg.308b54e7e5b356bc6a8d5d98f3b619fe.jpg

Marked a "show" side with a "V" to keep things lined up

5a676bfa1e258_Vmark.jpg.94931387549ecd1602c4ce00826fca55.jpg

Then got of the toys to dress the edges a bit

jointers.jpg.bad888287e7c2f74961e885adf98c44a.jpg

"We have ways...."  worked both edges, until I was able to spread a bead of glue, and add a few clamps..

5a676c7f7cc1f_gluedup.jpg.47a637bae915c1ea880487fda80b9baa.jpg

Will let this sit a while....break for Lunch.     Need to haul more boards to the shop..AFTER Lunch..

This will be the top of the bookcase....need to build the face frame and the door, next.....

Stay tuned.....

Hauled one board to the shop, after Lunch.     Decided to use 3/4" plywood as filler strips along the back of the shelves...Bandsaw was acting up....got  three fillers done, including a dovetail pin on the ends....a spot of glue, and drive each home..

5a67d1e8664ae_Fillerstrip.jpg.5ecf959d534111805fd11e0cb34e6b7b.jpg

Tried to resaw parts for the face frame....at 1-1/2 wide.....bandsaw was acting like it was falling apart....had to stop ( it had stopped cutting, anyway)

Blew up all the dust, found the lower drive wheel was loose.....reset it back to where it was supposed to be.....threw the old blade away, installed another, sharper blade,    And finished the cuts....

5a67d2d52a72e_wavyparts.jpg.2b54cda623c1d7d0bc909cea5d6835e8.jpg

Removed the top and set it up on the bookcase, to get it out of the way......set up a way to joint the edges..

5a67d342e6310_jointerjig.jpg.04175dada1a731d38cbc45aee6475a59.jpg

The one c clamp is held by the end vise...the other c clamp?

5a67d3973ba26_bigclamp.jpg.55d2d240b26a98bacb91f250a9591d46.jpg

Well, there is a block screwed to the bench, as a stop.    C Clamp to keep things from sliding around.   I jointed the two long Stiles ..

5a67d40694844_jointedrails.jpg.bbaee4b49eb77c859efdaa1b850e87f5.jpg

And then the shorter rails....Then did a bit of  lay out work, to find out about cutting these...

tenons.jpg.8dd6d8d66df46cefa050fe38f603b1fe.jpg

Rails were 3/4" too long.  Then marked for the tenons,   trimmed down a bit.   Got out the mortise jig, and chopped four mortises

5a67d4dbf25fc_mortisejig.jpg.2f3df48ff73404dbc31f662a24f0f881.jpg

About this time, that hammer thought my thumb was the top of a chisel...

Ring finger picked a splinter up, under the finger nail...legs were cramping....lovely day..

Got all the mortises done, somehow....and spread some glue around ( including all over my fingers..) and added a couple clamps..

5a67d5acf0a2a_clampedup.jpg.0d0d7596ae09b1685d58b27dbce87c00.jpg

Decided to stop for the day.  IF you look in the background of the last picture..you will get an idea just how tall this thing is...

Maybe, if things  turn out better...I can get the face frame installed, and maybe the top?    Top may need trimmed for width...might try tomorrow afternoon?

Stay tuned..

Hmmm.....Had to add a thin strip to the outside edges of the face frame.....Top is out of the clamps, edge details added, counter-bored holes drilled.

5a6a24edebcbf_topdetails.jpg.e393e155a2dfb4f17c130d76aca4aa90.jpg

Face frame was also drilled, and counter-bored.....then installed along with the top...

installed.jpg.409fcf986d12e48c905f59cd2a7bcba3.jpg

Added a couple cleats....

cleats.jpg.706458e1f05e183e022f4c83a436295b.jpg

Then attached the bookcase to the cleats..

attached.jpg.bcdc7f38ef183dabab8549244a64c478.jpg

Still need a plywood back made.   Turn this tall drink of water around for a PIP..

Need to start working on a door for the Bookcase part.   Going to be a tall one...Stay tuned
