Went and hid in the shop for a little bit, today Thought I could get the tenons done.....and that was when the fight started... Thought I'd set up the old Wards #78  to mill the cheeks....

I always wanted one of those revolvers that shot 20+ times without reloading.

Snuck back down to the shop last night.....thinking  I would just, remove the clamps and get set up for today's shop time (IF any)

Somehow, other things were done, as well...besides cussing

58dd4533c68cf_beadwork.JPG.5b59a10a87abff4b51bae25f96ea54a2.JPG

Figured a way to add a bead to the outside corner of the legs....Stanley#45 didn't care much for that knot, though

Have to run the bead done one face of the leg, the rotate  the leg 90 degrees ( sounds painful...) and do the other face of the leg.

58dd45e5829fc_beadcorner.JPG.4be18f40f24d91c9b5feae5d1131ef9e.JPG

It is the same cutter that made the bead along the bottom edges of the aprons.   Then before I moved things for the next bead, I ran a smooth plane along the leg.    One or two faces were still a bit rough....not anymore.   kaid out and chopped, and fitted Mortise #3.....the got a start on #4

DSCF0001.JPG.c57e1efefa9e82f1a2e453cb0a51dea5.JPG

And got the usual suspects ready to go..

tooling.JPG.f7004da0916520811ab54e2ebe8e5c90.JPG

The 1" wide chisel is sticking up out of the rack in the background, right behind the red handled square.

As for the depth stops on the Mitre Box..

58dd4752afaeb_depthstop.JPG.a13e896b522243a163b436b718a97be2.JPG

That brass collar, I raise it up to limit how far the saw cuts down,  there is a second one around in the back.  Just an old mitre box..

58dd47c1cd6b2_mitrebox.JPG.d17d2c7cee3252387ba4d8686346c890.JPG

The little saw that has just been sharpened up....seems to cut pretty good, now.

Later, I'll try to get the other side assembly glued up.   That way, I can start on the narrow sides and a drawer....IF I get around to the shop....stay tuned

Ok, I got side #2 done and set aside.   Decided to work on the drawer today.....

58e04dfa4ccb8_setup.JPG.a47f9f0f506b87c4269133c7178358aa.JPG

Reset the Stanley 45 to make a few grooves.  Usual jig on the bench to hold things still long enough..

groovy.JPG.3365d87c3b9c45ad92d9054644d5393e.JPG

Those dovtetails are PITA to do..

dovetails.JPG.f306a21b9a34fe9952669e1887bd8693.JPG

Maybe, one day, I will get good at hand cut halfblind dovetails....this was my  second try, ever...

Went to cut a dado for the false back....long rods were still too short to use the fence.    After laying out and switching cutters, I tried something else..

The 358 mitre box neeeded it's depth stops set a little lower.   Then I cut two lines, one on each side of the dado.  I used a chisel to pare down just a bit, so the "walls" became the fence..

58e04fadf3327_dadosetup.JPG.f7d3639bc12a16b6edb0c117544acc57.JPG

Then ran the 45 a few times to finish things up...

dado.JPG.fb5f1aee516bbe92a325a96dcfe57cfa.JPG

Not too hateful?    There is a "rebate" all the way to the back of the sides.   Almost the same routine...saw down to make a wall.  This time, I could chisel 99%  of the waste off, then clean it up with the 45.

Had the grooves done, needed to cut the backs for height..

resaw.JPG.75b3a7ea1e57fae81970ef202190f6f8.JPG

Marked how much to saw off one edge....nice, but left a rough saw-marked edge, so, got out the plane..

58e050f077069_juniorjackplaned.JPG.2b9613990c4e200aad1952390f518181.JPG

Edge is now smooth and straight.   It helped to lay out the size of the plywood bottom.   Was able to saw a panel out...but the edges were a bit too wavy.   Set the panel into the end vise, and used that plane to "joint" the edges straight.    About time for Elmer to show up?

58e051850215f_clampforest.JPG.5facff8837faaa70e38b1f6c8746cb80.JPG

Took every single one of these type of clamps I had in the shop.    The two backs  were secured with screws and glue.   The ones clear in the back needed predrilled.   Why two backs?

drawer.JPG.504ad7080a2cb4e2c0138d6ed0ead2bc.JPG

Because there is a stash box in the back of the drawer.    Open the drawer about a foot, looks like a normal drawer....open the drawer  all the way out, and find what is hidden away...

Letting the glue do it's thing tonight, might be a bit worn down.   Stay tuned, mortise day is coming back into the shop.   Need to get this base assembled, then make some guides for this fancy drawer to slide on.  Wood guides, of course.

OK, I'm starting to get worried...Is "Shop Cat" still on the payroll? I haven't seen him in a while...

Oh yeah, nice work on the drawer today too considering your  "plane break."

Same time, same station tomorrow???

Shop Cat has other Priorities ,  he IS a TOM cat, after all.   His "stand-in" doesn't like it too well down in the shop, prefers to sleep all day on the top step.....right where I have to step.

Depends on the GrandBrats.....I might need to go and hide out in the shop...maybe take along a few Mountain Dews, in case I need one..

Ok, got the drawer out of the clamps today, needed the bench space for a plane rehab.    Got that out of the way, and the plane put in the til...

Clamped the drawer into the vise, and cleaned up a few glue ups..

58e152ca213c7_cleanup.JPG.f99c5ba32367924526e1489a30ac8259.JPG

Have to make these pretty, after all.   Got all the sides, smoothed up, Front needed flattened, one side needed planed to match the other so they'd sit level...sat the drawer aside..work needed done..

58e153965690b_bigmortise.JPG.ba300bae4eddee68c4dd3a70e0355c12.JPG

needed two of these chopped...yep, right through a knot..

58e153ecd3b6c_testfitlarge.JPG.817b97ce55ac123456e672df18e275ad.JPG

This was the one that didn't have the knot in the way.   Got both large mortises chopped and fitted, then a couple little  chops..

58e1545984090_littlemortise.JPG.9ceafc8ac5d723934da10774dc9b679d.JPG

This one wasn't to bad to do, and fit

58e154911c8f8_litlefitted.JPG.6934127f0a254e2afbd956e862e997cc.JPG

But that second one was a bit rough..

58e154e8b5322_little2.JPG.f4147d22251b28c402e11596806247be.JPG

Dang knots.   Got ot chopped out anyway, wasn't pretty, but once things get glued up, not going to show.....Need two fancy mortises/sockets..

socket.JPG.40b5211655a8944610133ae86ca00747.JPG

Something like this?  Top rail above the drawer opening, gets a dovetail connection done.   Had to figure a way to saw the sides, and still see where I was sawing at..

58e1560605b50_sawwork.JPG.63a1ea949cd952ad46eb9ea6d089de7f.JPG

Saw to do the sides a bit, then a couple of chisels to dig out the waste, then a test fit..

58e1568e418b1_fitteddovetail.JPG.73c7ff25207f46295087e8eae97e296c.JPG

Got    both of these done, decided to dry fit the entire mess, to see how to clamp it, Jed...

58e156d308193_dryfit.JPG.05729879883e055de67871c8951cbf9f.JPG

I could also made sure that the drawer would fit.....it does, but I will have to raise the drawer guides up a hair, to make the gap even.

Need to go and buy a new bottle of  Elmer's....old one's spout broke.

Just a day in the shop.....might need a few extra hands when the glue up gets done.....stay tuned

That is some really great work

You are either getting better at this or using better materials.

Well, after a bit of cussing and fussing ( who...me?)  glue up somehow occurred in the shop..

58e1b0b29a10c_gluedup.JPG.e5b42c838071e85d8a5c559c120a90aa.JPG

I checked the diagonals....it is square, diagonals match exactly.....lucky.    I checked the fit of the drawer, again....not so lucky, drawer would not slide in....got to checking the sides of the drawer....yep, bowed at the bottom edge on one side, and in the middle of the other......Jumbo Jack to plane the sides down, trying NOT to hit the dovetails on the ends...

got two corner blocks made up, and two more ready to cut out....

58e1b1a36212b_backcorners.JPG.5136ba9011254e789cf845966667598c.JPG

trying to work around the inside corners, and do a dovetailed connection to the tops of the aprons....need to let the glue cure, before I go banging on things, again.

Might have gotten one part reversed..

58e1b2373c937_draweropening.JPG.ff8a59ef7759a31b2f891a01dd74a674.JPG

Notches in the top rail were supposed to go to the inside....too late, now...

I think I have have quite enough "fun" for one day....watch for the Bat Signal,   same time, same Batty channel...

Didn't want to, must resist....ah the heck with it...might as well go to the shop....

Needed to remove the clamps, anyway....though that would be it for the day.....nope....Had to fine tune the drawer front a bit..

58e2c3e404061_planework.JPG.9907de8d222865f675e13b8a5179ae88.JPG

As it had a slight "curve" in the front...Results?

shavings.JPG.1c9425b912838698e92e39914328b878.JPG

Not too bad, for a jumbo sized jack plane?   Decided to make some corner blocks....plain ones, no dovetails..needed to pre-drill some holes..

58e2c498eed5e_pwrkraftdrill.JPG.0dc1681d48e5da034cb37d1a66fc5293.JPG

Ganged all four blocks up..Hey, it IS a vintage drill, from Montgomery Wards... A through hole then a counter bore...

counterbored.JPG.85ad63158d8bb759ab9a87ba29f81d40.JPG

Maybe this is where KREG got the idea?     Installed with glue and screws..

58e2c5511baa7_cornerblocks.JPG.8e7ed3b0da2dc0ac5d4a1c3329437edf.JPG

needed a kicker to keep the LONG drawer from tipping down.  1x that was a hair too long, glued in place friction fit..

kicker.JPG.3e8fed505c8a5d06180e63df6f519fdc.JPG

Top part of the drawer system....Needed the runners and guides, and a stop block..

58e2c635cc558_drawerguides.JPG.810be7a3c18947823b275d949cb29f64.JPG

Thin scrap, glued and nailed to guide the drawer.   A 1 x 1 screwed and glued for the drawer to ride on, And that little block way back there, to keep the drawer from going back too far.

Drilled the kicker for three screws, and drilled a slot into the corner blocks..

58e2c6dae6bcf_slotsandholes.JPG.c8a3b4f7e47fdff4d646578522f79906.JPG

Just drill through the corner blocks, then rock the drill to make the slot..

while I was working on the drawer guides, noticed the non-beaded corners of the legs looked a bit to  plain...we have ways..

spokeshave.JPG.2854241cdcc3d69301b85217e5ecb091.JPG

ran this around to get some shape going, then sanded smooth... I rounded the corners of the top...top was big enough without any breadboards added.

58e2c7d99737b_roundedcorner.JPG.73e5e2266b03fcc1d58814277715903c.JPG

So, what holds this fancy top in place?  First I set the top on the bench, "good side" down, then added these items..

58e2c838425cc_topisattached.JPG.e37f28340aa03efbdc334675de106127.JPG

No glue needed.  Screws in the slots will move with the top, center line will stay put....Time for some "Brew"

58e2c8b348d70_Brewedup.JPG.613c14b41a6fe847d23ea6116c82c7fc.JPG

Left the table on it's top, and applied the first coat to the undersides, legs and aprons.  Left the edges of the top alone, needed a handhold to flip this

58e2c93dbb25b_brewedtop.JPG.b546e91e873cbb4e82c0727c6123c99f.JPG

So I could  do the top and it's edges.   Needed a knob for the drawer...made one from an old finial that happened to have a threaded insert....Cut the skinny part off, and round the rest a bit

knob.JPG.147dcb313f22ea1ca8a7ad02cff9379a.JPG

So..about time for a PIP?

PIP.JPG.23db7e70572519c0154df1541f477aff.JPG

Has a bit of glare off the top.   Drawer is slid out a bit, to allow the front to dry.  Will let this mess set a day....MIGHT be Project Worthy?

That looks REALLY FREAKING AWESOME!!

I really enjoyed the journey to get to the final result.

Really nice Steve. It was fun following along. I think you've about got that hand tool thing down pat.

No might be about it Steven. IT IS a worthy project! And not only the table, but the journey you took us on. I truly appreciate every episode. Thanks...

BTW...still haven't told us what goes in the "secret" compartment...:P

Then it wouldn't be a secret....
