As I went out to Lowes to buy some more Gold Plated Pine....

 

A 2 x 4 x 8'.....a 1 x 4 x 8', and a 1 x 8 x 8'.....$20.26  counting my Mil. ID 10% discount.     I could have driven the 28 miles to Menards, and saved about a dollar a board, but Menards doesn't do the Military ID discount.   And the gas for the round trip......Lowes is here in town, just 2 miles away. 

 

Letting the boards sit in the shop for a day, maybe.    Need to crosscut , joint, and glue up for a top.     Rip the 2x into four leg blanks.    I thought about turning the legs...until I looked at all the junk laying ON the lathe...might just taper two sides instead.   1x4 for the aprons.    I could even add a drawer, as I have some plywood  stock left over.   give it a day or two, and I'll start up the build thread, again...

Well, I'll keep the project story right here, then....

Since I have trouble just sitting still  when there is lumber to be sawn......

 

Marked out for three 1 x 8 x 27" long boards in that 1 x8......Had one nasty spot full of knots to work around.  6-1/2 SKIL saw to make the cuts.....Handsaw is out to get sharpened.

Laid the three out, only needed 17" in width.....so I resawed the third board into a narrower strip, or three....Needed to joint the edges..

Made a lot of fancy curlies..

Did both edges on the narrow board, and then..

Might as well do the wider boards, too.     Jointer is an Ohio Tool Co.  No. 0-7...same as a Stanley #7

Next, the "FUN" begins.....

 

Had to somehow set two pipe clamps across the bench.   had to raise them up a bit to clear other things.   Fought with one because it couldn't grip the pipe....pair of vise grips cured that..

One over, two under.   Sitting here, picking dried glue off of me.    Messy job.   Will TRY to let this set until tomorrow....then MAYBE I can get something done?

 

Legs will be a Shaker Taper thing, tapered on the two inside edges.   Might just use a handplane or two for that.    Undecided about adding a drawer, yet.   Would be on the narrow ends, if I do.     Trying to get a top that is 3/4" x 17" x 27" long.   We'll see how this turns out....stay tuned to this Batty Channel....

Like the tapered leg idea.

I never understood why people thought he could sing! This is more apparent around Christmas time when the local station switches to playing all carols. They only have about 50 tunes to play, and I'll swear 1/2 of them are the old Gene Autry renditions (awful). Singing cowboy, my butt!. Sorry, off my soapbox for now.

I have never really been a fan of his singing or hos movies- a real cowboy would not dress like that

Hate to tell y'all but all the westerns back then were like that. No movies were accurate on clothes nor weapons. Everyone did not have a Colt 45, and did not have cowboy boots and western style hats. Oh by the way chaps only came just below the knees. I like Gene and Roy so now off the soap box

I always wanted one of those revolvers that shot 20+ times without reloading. 

Trying to resist going to the shop today........need to get that panel out of the clamps, and set things up to make four tapered legs......must resist......

 

Well, IF I merely remove the clamps..no sharp edged items would be used....must resist..

 

But, if I do go to the shop....something else might get done......must resist...

Ok, here we go....I even survived a Monday IN the shop.....imagine that...the only thing that went "wrong"?   Batteries died in the camera...we have more..

Top is out of the clamps, needed to trim the end square.   Drew a line where the saw needed to go, set up a guide bar

Distance from the guide to the cut line, was the same as from the saw blade to the edge of the saw's foot plate.  Ran the saw along the guide bar

Looks straight to me...repeat for the other end....less wood to plane, this way

Slowly got down the #6c plane, to level the top, on both faces,  needed a bit of fine tuning...

Detail work with the smoother plane.   Set the top aside until needed again...we have legs to make..

There is now way I can run an 8' long 2 x 4 through the bandsaw.....needed to trim a few to 25"...

Saw was resharpened at a place that does about any edge tool.   Not too bad a saw, now, yes, that IS a nail sticking out on the end of the saw, prevents the saw from being pulled back too far.  Just an old finish nail.    I reset the resaw jib on the bandsaw, and ran three blanks through

Because I wanted a couple extra, just in case of an "Ah....shoot.." I saved the straightest of the middle off cuts.   Checked through the mess, and picked out the four best ones..

Motley bunch, look almost as bad as mine.....remember that offcut?

Well, it made a nice straightedge to draw a line with.  I marked a line, below all the knots at the top of the blanks.    Down at the other end, I marked a 3/4" mark.   Connected the dots..

Ok, the "top" is in the leg vise, and a block holds the "foot"  up in the air.    A cambered jack plane to hog most of the waste off,  starting at the foot, and working back towards the top.  Layout line is on the other side, sorry    Got as close to that line as I could, then went with a long plane to finish it up..

So that a nice smooth taper from the square top to a skinny foot.   Rotate the leg blank, mark a second taper, repeat the above..

Should have a nice (almost) square foot...

And, two tapered sides.    (TIP:)   Keep track of which two tapers go where, along with mortises, as they both go to the same sides of each leg.   )

 

All I need to do, is mark the next blank, and repeat

I  could also bandsaw the lines...but I'd still have to run the plane to smooth them out.    And, as soon as supper is over, I might do a couple more....no rush?

Ok, tonight I am sitting here....soaked, sore, and quite worn out....and I even made a huge mess...

Tapering legs with a set of handplanes.....I did try once to use the bandsaw.....wasn't happy.    It cut a curved edge, that I still had to plane flat. 

Finally got all of the legs tapered..

Sitting with the tapers towards the inside of the stack.   Stick ( that wooden one there) is to hold the feet up.....

This is looking from the tops of the legs.    First three legs, didn't matter too much which two sides I tapered,  the fourth one, I had to check to see where the tapers HAD  to go. 

Made use of that #358 Mitre Box, to cut the three aprons to rough length...

Short one is a bit over 14" long, the two behind it are about 24" or so long.  I bought TWO 1 x 6 x 6'  pine boards today at Menards.   The Boss wanted to price a few things there, so I spent just over $6 for the two.   

This one had too many knots, but the one behind it was almost clear.    Had a couple, mostly in one spot. 

Got the floor swept up, Igor is still on "Vacay"....Maybe tomorrow, I can start some mortise & tenon work? 

There will be a "short" apron, but it will also be the front of a drawer.    Have had enough fun for one day....stay tuned...

Went and hid in the shop for a little bit, today

Thought I could get the tenons done.....and that was when the fight started...

Thought I'd set up the old Wards #78  to mill the cheeks....

A 1 x 6 is a bit wide for a tenon, notched these in about 3/4" from each edge.   Took the trouble to 1). set the spur

Did it without losing the bolt!    2). Set the depth stop..

Tried to get it at 1/4" deep.....and set the fence..

Noticed things were "moving as I used the plane.....Grrrrr  depth stop AND the fence were moving.   Had to find a better way to do this. 

Handsaw, and a chisel...worked, but needed cleaned up...

It did work, a little too well...decided to use the Stanley 358 mitre box instead.    I can set the depth stops on it,and they don't move.   A sharp paring chisel to peel the waste off...

Discovered all that,AFTER having to trash the one apron.   The shoudler plane almost peeled it all the way off... Not a biggie, trashed long apron will now be the drawer front.  

I somehow managed to get ONE plane to work the way it should...

The Stanley 45 was still set up for bead work.   I had to redo the fence, so it sat below the cutter, so I could get as close to the cutter as I could.   The idea was to add a detail to the bottom edge of the aprons..

If I can manage a way to clamp the legs, later, they will get a couple of these, too.   Plane liked to clog up, though..

after each bead was done.  Got the two long and one short aprons all milled, and tenoned.....time to chop a couple holes

Clamped a leg to the bench, got out a few toys for digging.....used a tenon tolay out for it's new home

Since this is the "first" one,I marked the leg and the end of the apron with a #1.    Got out the shop stool, and ...

This is what I have to chop.   This one was the easy one, the next one had a BIG, hard as steel knot right about in the middle. 

This was 1/4" by 3/4" deep.  Did a dry fit to see IF I was deep enough..

Not too bad.   That fancy looking tool? That be the "Gooseneck" chisel  I made a while back, to clean out the bottom of mortises...

Got the second mortise chopped, for the tenon on the other end of this apron....took a LOT of checking, to make sure I was digging in the right spot...finally, said the heck with it..

Spread some Elmer's around, grabbed a few pipe clamps, and glued things up.   Will let this mess sit a while.  Once the clamps are off, I can do the other long side. 

 

Maybe get to building a drawer by this weekend?   I had to use the #78 because the 45 still needs a spur.     It was ordered today, and even shipped today!    Dados will get done when it arrives.  Stay tuned, to this Batty Channel....
