I've been dabbling with Greene and Greene techniques and features for boxes about a month now. I really enjoy it. I have also made a number of boxes using the Shou Sugi Ban techniques. So I decided to experiment making a box incorporating both these techniques. I started my making a box out of Pine and Cedar with box finger joints first as shown. This is a dry fit. No glue yet. I then started "pillowing" the finger ends Next I loosely tacked on a plug to see how it would look. I decide to take the risk and move forward. So I bought square hole punches from Lee Valley. Once I got the punches, I started making square holes as shown on all four corners of the box. It was alot of work. I Shou Sugi Ban burned the Top (lid) Here's a view showing the brass hinges installed. Note how the box is contoured to lift the box off the surface. This is called a "cloud lift" There are several variations of this G&G technique. Here's a corner shot Here's the box open with my gent saw placed in it. Hope you liked it. Thanks for looking! Cheers!! MrRick

Cherry Box
steven newman posted a gallery image in Small Crafts, Boxes, Picture Frames, and Lighting
From the album: Simple little Cherry Box
front view, showing the brass plated latch -
Went and bought the latch today. And even some holders. The holders had bolts,, need to go and buy some screws for them. About like the "tabs" you turn to replace a screen in the screen door. Will adapt them.. So, I got out that little No.6 eggbeater, and drilled some pilot holes. Had to use the smallest #1 Phillips screwdriver I had handy to drive four screws... I think this will just have to do. i did try to get a better picture of that lid. Camera kept trying to say it is yellow.....adjusted photo to show it more like what it really is in colour.. The only sap wood I had in the shop was either Cherry or Walnut. Might have gotten a little of each. Cherry heartwood for the center stripe.

From the album: Box for a Stanley 45
Front view, showing the fancy grain. Handcut finger joints. A copy (as best as I can) of the box Stanley made for their No.45 combo plane. Old box is now a shelf sitter, due to all the breakage done by the uSPS.. -
I think I can call this one done? Was going to throw out the old case for a Wallie World Dremel wannabe, decided to save the latch, at least. New brass screws to install it. Smallest screws I had, they would have to be phillips. One coat of Poly Gloss is now dry Used the block plane to dress this high spot down a bit. Open sez me? I think this will do for now.....

Got this thing almost finished, waiting on the BLO. Second coat is on. Hinges are on have a latch installed on the front.. made a rack to hold the bits in place.. Merely notch some metal angles, then screwed them in place. Test fit to make sure the bits would fit. Old chisel to adjust a couple for width. Drawer liner mesh to cut down on the rattles. Side view. Grain looks decent enough. lid will actually stay opened, on it's own... Got MOST of the bits in there. Will just have to do, for now. Waiting to see how many more coats of BLO I'll need...
