Our Patriot Turners- @Steve Krumanaker is the master at turning birdhouse ornaments! He can see these awesome little houses in the most unlikely places. Check his post for more images and what species he used for these. What's Coming Up- An update on the Fall 2025 Vendor Showcase from Tod Raines and Cindy Drozda. The link for registration- https://streamyard.com/watch/UEPASfQYUjg2 This Friday, October 10, 2025, Cindy Drozda's Tool Talk The YouTube link- https://www.youtube.com/live/nBjS2woRNJU?si=RERI2OapWi-VleUQ For The Newbies- If you have tried turning with a tenon and had the tenon break, Mike Peace shows us methods of salvaging the turning- Expand Your Horizons- Tod Raines' presentation from last Friday focused on making wooden jaws for a four jaw chuck. The wooden jaws are less prone to damaging the turning. Some good instructions on making the jaws. Live demonstrations can have their share of "oops" moments. Fast forward to the 1 hour mark and see the "mistake" and Cindy's comment just before the excitement. Richard Raffan turns a bowl to salvage it from splitting. What caught my eye was the way he used a shop made jig to hold the turning to the lathe while he created the bowl feet. Simple but affective. Very near the end of the video, just past the 22 minute mark Turning Time With Easy Wood Tools- Easy Wood Tool Demonstrations for next week- https://charlestownewoodturners.org/ https://www.woodworkingshop.com/woodworking-extravaganza?srsltid=AfmBOortMTJHpUxUpUHBQ-n1P3ZiLX628bhOnkhPrfM6A1VkMsyPRgZg https://www.woodcraft.com/pages/store/appleton?srsltid=AfmBOorIkkkEMwjeU3Lbt8FM8cpQrFyH4Fo_3TsmDTe1pw77kLx_nVsy https://www.woodcraft.com/pages/store/lexington https://www.woodcraft.com/pages/store/oklahoma-city Easy Wood Tools negative rake cutters were developed for turning acrylic and hybrid blanks. ONE DAY LEEFT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Our Patriot Turners- @Gerald started a new topic for our turners! I hope we can make this one as popular as the one @RustyFN started for showing what's on our lathes! So far we've had two members add items. Let's make this topic sail to the "Most Posts" list! Our other continuing topic of "What's On Your Lathe" also had activity! @RustyFN and @forty_caliber both added some of what they are working on! Check out this post for more images! @forty_caliber also posted a nice little "catch-all" bowl. I think these bowls are so useful. Not too large to take up a lot of space but large enough to hold most small items. Great for pocket dumps! See more images here- What’s Coming Up- Click on the images for links to more information and registration Well, it happened last week, but if you missed it, Cindy has posted the video- For The Newbies- How fast should I turn is a question we often hear. There really isn't a hard and fast rule. Ron Brown has some thoughts in this video "short"- Mortice or tenon to attach the bowl to the lathe. Ask 10 woodturners and you'll probably get at least 15 different answers. My personal choice in a recess and use it to incorporate the foot. Here's what Kent Weakley thinks about it- Of course, if you don't have a chuck, there are other ways to attach a bowl blank to the lathe. Sam Angelo shares his thoughts on some methods of securing that blank- Expand Your Horizons- It's just past the first of the month and the videos from "4 Ways" is available. This month Richard Raffan, Tomislav Tomasic, Sam Angelo and Mike peace each turn their version of a natural edge bowl. Tim Yoder turns a beautiful Flame Elder platter. He eve uses some of his Easy Wood Tools in the process! It is not too soon to start thinking about making Christmas ornaments. Alan Stratton creates one that is out of this world! Craft Supplies USA has an idea for something that the ladies in your life might enjoy- New Turning Items- Ron Brown has a new Ladle Chuck System- Safe turning

Not a subject we have talked about here but we all need exposure to the latest with the crisis. Our turning club (Magnolia Woodturners) had a IRD last Thursday with Mike Mahoney , world renowned turner. The IRD is a method of doing remote demos and allowing interaction via Zoom and other social platforms. The demonstrator does not have to travel and everyone is at home. In normal times the viewers can be in a group. This method of viewing a demo can give you a better look at what is going on that being there in person. We had 50 persons including Mike present for the 3 hour demo. He uses his videos and fast forwards to teaching points then draws on screen. It is a very effective teaching method. There are now a growing core of demonstrators turning to this method of demo . Benefits for the club are that we can share with other clubs and even club members who cannot get out can be present for a demo.

Ok it is over and turned out very well. For background our club has scheduled Jimmy Clewes twice before this weekend and both times the weather caused cancellation of his flight. Well in January 2018 I saw him at the TAW Symposium and scheduled again. Through all the planning and communication finally he was here Friday. We had a great turnout Saturday for the demo and have six new members for the club. Had a great time and all our video and sound equipment worked flawlessly. What Can I say I was responsible for getting that done with some help we made it happen and every time we do this we will get better. Jimmy did four pieces and we all learned something. Today was the hands on and we had 8 people turning . We did a colored rim platter and a scorched ash bowl with lid to be completed in home shop. Needless to say we created a lot of compost or bedding material. Yes everyone had something to take home to work on finish. Overall it would have been worth twice the cost.

Cold and windy today, a great day to be at the lathe. Unfortunately computer repair calls kept that from happening! Our Patriot Turners- @DAB and @Woodbutcherbynight added some really nice additions to last week's "Wednesday's..." DAB posted a sweet cherry bowl- And Woodbutcherbynight is preparing a nice looking hand wheel for a project- @Steve Krumanaker is preparing for a demonstration he will be giving to the woodturning club to which he belongs. One of the turning items he will show is a "Knitting Nancy". Steve describes his preparation and topics in his post- @Gerald continues to keep us up-to-date with his new off-center lathe chuck. Gerald talks about which lathe tools seem to give the best results in his post- What’s Coming Up- Woodturners Wonders has posted their 2019 Symposium schedule- Click on the above image for the link to their site and products. For The Newbies- We recently posted a video about keeping the lathe Morse Tapers clean. Mike Peace added another video with more information concerning various accessories that can be used in conjunction with the Morse tapers Expand Your Horizons- I know that @Steve Krumanaker turns some bird houses and even creates tiny birds to occupy them. Recently Mr. David Reed Smith made available a tutorial for making his version- Mr. Smith's approach to any project is always unique. You can read the tutorial at- http://davidreedsmith.com/Articles/Birds/Birds.html New Turning Items- Woodturners Wonders has a new, small, air powered sander- Check out the details at- https://woodturnerswonders.com/products/pro-mini-variable-speed-random-orbital-sander Everything Else- Rick Turns has the December YouTube woodturning videos summarized- The Woodturning OnLine newsletter arrived this past week. One of the articles had a simple little lathe project- The tutorial is here- http://www.stevefreemanonline.com/2017/01/tooth-pick-holder-shape-mushroom-wood-turning-projects-beginners/ The entire newsletter is at- https://www.woodturningonline.com/ I finished up a late Christmas present. It was the bowl I had been using as a test for the Wonder Weave sanding screens. It is finished with beeswax and mineral oil combination. I found that I need to make/buy better sanding devices for the inside of bowls. I have a 3" pad- but it doesn't do well on the inside of the bowls at the bottom corners. I've made some sanding balls (from Mr. David Reed Smith's tutorials) that use sandpaper but was thinking of something that I could test the Wonder Weave products. Need to think on it. Safe turning

Berea is an interesting town -- lots of artisans, including Kelly Mehler, Warren May, Will Bondurant, Charles Harvey, and a college that offers free tuition in a work-study program (with woodworking a significant part). If you go, look around town and have a meal at the College's Boone Tavern. It's right off I-75 about 2 hr south of Cincinnati. Nearby is a nice Shaker Village, also. https://www.lie-nielsen.com/hand-tool-events/USA/208
