Tomorrow is the 80th anniversary of D-Day. There are so few of the brave men and women who served in World War II left to honor their sacrifices to keep our country free. The Greatest Generation is almost gone. Our Patriot Turners- @StaticLV2 posed a question to our members concerning turning if you are a "Lefty". Specifically, dealing with hollowing out the bowl's inside. If you van help him, please see his post and provide some input- @Masonsailor has been building doors for a while. Paul got a chance to sneak over to his lathe to turn several of these door related items. Check out his post for the details! @Fred W. Hargis Jr posted his turned box for use to drool over. First partially finished and then completely finished- More information and descriptions at- And @Gerald finished up his work on an urn for his daughter-in-law's father. It is a beautifully done piece and a fitting resting place for a loved one. Gerald's post includes some process images and description of what he has done- A week or so ago, @RustyFN showed us some turned lidded boxes he made from boxwood. Rusty's friend does chip carving and he embellished the two boxes with amazing work- Check out Rusty's post to see the complete series of pictures from start to finish- Once again, our turners have come through with an amazing collection of work for our "ON/OFF" the lathe posts! Thank You!!! From "ON"- @Gerald and @calabrese55 worked on hollow vessels- Lots of great comments. Pick up where we left off last week at- And from "OFF"- @StaticLV2 and @kreisdorph created some amazing work segments and bowls- Here's the link to catchup with all the action- What’s Coming Up- https://www.neowta.com/press/kirk-deheer-demonstration-and-classes/ For The Newbies- Popular Woodworking made available several turning articles. https://www.popularwoodworking.com/projects/turn-your-first-bowl/?oly_enc_id=7454G3912223B7R https://www.popularwoodworking.com/tools/carbide-tools-unlocking-woodturning-potential/?oly_enc_id=7454G3912223B7R https://www.popularwoodworking.com/tools/the-woodturning-scraper/?oly_enc_id=7454G3912223B7R Expand Your Horizons- Craft Supplies USA has a nice tutorial for turning a utility box- It is just after the first of the month and the "4 Ways" collaboration videos were posted. This project was a little different as each turner made their own favorite project. Mike Peace- Richard Raffan- Sam Angelo- And Tomislav Tomasic- New Turning Items- Not new but I use this bandsaw blade for resawing inserts for my rolling pins. Thought maybe some of the other turners here may do similar cutting- https://www.highlandwoodworking.com/wood-slicer-resaw-bandsaw-blades.aspx?utm_source=Advertiser+Promotion&utm_content=FW+Dedicated+Offers&utm_medium=Advertiser+Promotion Also, last week we posted a new jig from Ron Brown's Best. @HandyDan noticed that one of Ron Brown's jigs was a hollowing stabilizer. Dan said he was unfamiliar with the tool. This is a simple design and has limited depth capabilities compared to the ones used by Tim Yoder or Lyle Jamieson Everything Else- Safe turning

I am overwhelmed with the staff at the Cleveland Clinic while receiving treatment for prostate cancer. They treat each patient with such care! I felt compelled to do a carving for the clinic, so I asked at one of my doctors visit if they thought the clinic would actually hang something I carved. The next week I was told ABSOLUTELY! So onto a design. I wanted it to be inspirational, but also keep religion out of it - only because there are so many different beliefs I did not want to offend anyone. This is what I came up with, I need to finish it by Wednesday as that is my last doctors appointment after treatment. Will post a picture when finished, and hopefully one of it hanging in the clinic. Hope it goes in the Taussig Cancer Center! Again, I start with a design in Photoshop, transfer the pattern and start carving. Decided to add a touch of color (first time I did this) and final picture is the finished product. I will be presenting to the Clinic tomorrow (Wed 9/4/2019) I received prior approval to present something and they agreed to hang it. Hope it is in the Taussig Center where I received treatment.

Here is another carving I am working on for a gal at work. She is Puerto Rican and always stops by my office to give me a short spanish lesson. I will be retiring in July and she asked if I would carve her a little figure to keep in her office to remind her of me - how sweet! Anyway I decided to do something more than a little figure - so I am doing The Lords Prayer - but in Spanish. Here is the progress thus far - the wheat on the sides are burnt and shaded, but I covered them with masking tape to protect them while I carve the rest of the piece. Will post again once complete.

With @IrishWoodCarver, @Steve Krumanaker, our new member @pdexter plus the works that @Dale Felice, @Smallpatch and others I'm probably forgetting are doing could we consider adding a Woodcarving Forum? It would be great to have a place specifically to showcase & share their work? Doing so might entice others who share these talents to join TPW or perhaps already here but not sharing.

Happy Birthday America!!! Thunderstorms slowly moving thru our area right now. The annual fireworks display may be postponed. @Gerald posted a nice looking platter he is currently making- He has had several questions and comment about the process and the wood grain. @HandyDan added a nice image of one of his turnings to help explain what is meant by "feathering"- @Smallpatch finished up the teapots he has been creating- Final comments are in his post- @Steve Krumanaker is perfecting his ability to add decorations to his turnings. He is learning "Chip Carving". Looks to me as if he has got the process pretty well mastered- His post shows his progress- I thought of Steve when I happened across a site that creates custom rolling pins. Steve has a neat shop built laser engraver. The folks at http://www.thisiscolossal.com/2015/06/new-laser-engraved-rolling-pins-by-valek-imprint-elaborate-designs-on-baked-goods/ make some neat designs on rolling pins- These could make some really fancy cookies! Mike Peace has a 2 part video for making brush lids for finishing jars. Part 2 is linked from his YouTube page- This reminded me of @Steve Krumanaker's honey jars. The Woodturning OnLine newsletter came this week. Their featured project is one by Carl Jacobson. His video shows a Yin Yang turned platter. The "New and Hot" sections, of the newsletter, has some interesting items as well. The entire newsletter is at- http://www.woodturningonline.com/index.php Woodworker's Journal posted a YouTube video by Ernie Conover on turning small hollow vessels. Nice explanations and demonstration- I had the chance to play a little, this week. Started a little turning blank for the August demo. I forget where I read about this trick, maybe Mike Peace or Rick Turns, about using TiteBond glue as a sealer. I sealed up the turning blanks after I cut them from the logs and none have cracked. I sealed this rough blank turning the same way hoping it will be fine until I need it. Safe turning

I have just about filled up both sides of mt practice block. I can see some progress but not doing anything I'd be willing to put my name on just yet. This is one of my early efforts. I had done maybe 10 sets by this time. Still pretty rough. This one is a iittle better and to my eye I can see some progress. Did this one just this evening. I would guess by now I've done at least 500 of these three corner chip cutouts. This is the best one so far. It's funny, I'll do one and think, "that's pretty good". Then, I do a few more and look at them as a unit and wonder, what was I looking at? There is so much junk and rough cuts. Getting better I think but still a long way to go. Steve

This may not seem like it's turning related but it is. I want to learn a little about chip carving for embellishing. I have some boxes turned and ready but thought it might be better to practice on some flat pieces first. Glad I did, it's harder than I thought it might be. I am finding it's a lot like turning in that it's all about technique. This is the most basic cut and probably the most often used in chip carving, the triangle. Going to take a lot of practice I think. I can see some progress from top to bottom but have a long way to go. Steve
