Popular Post steven newman Posted June 4 Popular Post Report Posted June 4 Been ripping and a-cutting on a few planks...and a Project has been started... Some of the parts.. Then a few more parts.. Some other parts needed a little help.. So...we help it out a bit..with a bit of Cardio thrown in.. The goal was to get rid of all the wane, and BIG knots...and fuzzy edges... One plank used to be a 1 x 8 x 6'...took a while...but.. One board was rejected..wonder which one? Had a replacement handy... And..just to make the panel a tad wider... That "small knot"? might get shifted to the outside, and then sawn off.. Other parts.. 5/8" thick Soft Maple for the sides and back of a drawer...Ash for the 3 aprons and a drawer front...which leaves.. Needed for of these...to make tapered legs with...let them sit overnight, then... De-clamped them...set up the rip fence to just skim two faces...one to remove the glue lines, the second one was to skim of a face, to get rid of the "Fuzzies", 90 degrees to the first pass Passes #3 and #4..fence was reset to 1-1/2" width...and the other 2 faces were run through... Will have to trim the ends square..then decide which two faces to cut the tapers on... Until then.. I'll leave then clamped together. Need to joint a few edges... And get these 5 glued up into a top for a table.... Stay tuned.. Grandpadave52, HARO50, Headhunter and 6 others 7 2 Quote

Popular Post steven newman Posted June 4 Author Popular Post Report Posted June 4 Shop time this morning...tried out the new Tablesaw Blade.. While squaring up both ends of the leg blanks..so that they all match up.. Doesn't do too badly? Used the saw again, to trim the parts for a Table top panel to length... One of the cut-offs went sailing by my, hit the second step, and bounced back a bit...first dry fit? Not the best..try again.. Hmmm, will have to use a plane as a Jointer.. And, check again for any gaps left behind.. Getting there...worked my way through until I could try again.. Center board sticks up a hair..time for Glue, Cauls & Clamps And the other end.. Letting this mess sit a day or 2... Was a busy day? A Possibility ....had the shop fan set on HIGH.. Stanley No. 6c was plum worn out.. Stay tuned... Popular Post steven newman Posted June 7 Author Popular Post Report Posted June 7 (edited) Tapered legs...2 faces get tapers cut and planed..one corner gets a bead...so...easy way is to mill the bead first..on the best looking corner. Need a jig to hold things.. Block of scrap in the vise, at the other end is a small block.. The No. 66 is there to clean up the bead after the #45 mills it...I first run that #80 down the blank..works better for the planes.. Run the bead along one face, then rotate the blank. and complete the bead.. 2 done, two to go... Beads done..time to cut tapers..while leaving the beaded corner alone.. On the "top" of each leg, there are 2 "T"s...for taper/tenon..Lay out for the first cut..find how wide the apron will be, add 1" to that..and make a mark down from the "top" Down at the "foot" of the leg, leave 1"...next? New Bandsaw blade.. And make a royal mess on the floor.. Used an air hose to clean out the insides of the bandsaw.. First cut with the new blade.. And , use the cut-off to lay out the other cut.. And repeat for the other 3 legs.. All done? Nope..rested me up a day..came back to the shop this morning I think those 3 pipe clamps have been on long enough? then set the panel up on the tablesaw, for now.. Same jig, different tools.. Ohio No. 0-5 Jack plane ( because the Stanley #6c was too long) and a Stanley no. 4-1/2 Type 11 smoother... Goal was to remove any and all saw marks, and any "Bumps" in the road along the tapers Next, a block plane to add a slight round-over.. Repeat for the next 7 tapers...refine with a bit of 220 grit sandpaper...and that Stanley No. 80 Cabinet Scraper.. 4 done, 4 to go...all faces were sanded and scrapered.... Got everything smoothed down, time to sweep up the mess.. Was a very busy morning...90 minutes Thursday and Friday... I need a nap... Stay tuned... Popular Post steven newman Posted June 9 Author Popular Post Report Posted June 9 Ok...all the cauls and clamps came off that panel, this morning..clamped it down to the top of the tablesaw...theory was to use this.. And level the glue joints down....was NOT impressed....so, Olde School we go.. Ran this at a diagonal, where I could, then ran with the grain....got things looking close...decided to try the ROS, with 60 grit...all it did was stir up a dust cloud... Hmmm, how about this sander, since I don't have a beltsander at the moment.. Was my Dad's Craftsman "Finishing Sander". Fitted it up with some heavy-duty 80 grit paper...Sander was still set at "In-line" ...seemed to work pretty good..finished up by setting it to Orbital...I still had some high spots to level out...so.. Stanley No. 1204. Was Picked during the Garage Sales..sharpened it up, a wee bit of tune up...and a test drive on Soft Maple.... So..decided to see how it does on Ash... Didn't even bother to remove the Price Tag...just put it to work... My Cardio Workout for Sunday. Was a bit messy, today. Best looking face will be the "Show Face" for the Table's Top... Tomorrow being a Monday, not sure IF the shop will be open.. Stay tuned.. Harry Brink, JimM, lew and 4 others 7 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted June 10 Author Popular Post Report Posted June 10 Busy morning? 75 minutes of Mayhem ? Well, needed to trim the table top square...we have ways.. Tablesaw's Rip Fence is also a Guide for the Skilsaw.. Trimmed both ends.. Then during a lull while putting the Circular saw away... Got 3 aprons and a drawer front cut to size ( drawer front will get other cuts, later)....and I also cut 2 Bread Board ends to size Took a couple tries to get them to match each other... So...a CORDED ROUTER ......A Craftsman Router....with a Harbor Freight Bit To mill a way to attach the Bread Board ends... The bit? Didn't do a bad job, actually.. Operator error starting at a corner...next? Need to mill the matching grooves...and do a dry fit.. Before the glue and clamps arrive... Edge on the right will get jointed straight...this is also the underside of the top. Where I also mark out for where the legs and aprons will go.. Toes went into full CRAMP! Mode...so..that was it for the Tuesday Morning Shoptime....( have Laundry Detail this afternoon, stay tuned...) Handfoolery, Grandpadave52, HARO50 and 5 others 8 Quote

Popular Post steven newman Posted June 10 Author Popular Post Report Posted June 10 Laundry Detail, this afternoon...so...Tenons got done... Wasn't so much the spacing of the fence...it was the height of the saw blade...took a few tries..was looking for a 1/4" thick tenon that was 1/2" long/deep...then Stand it up and clip the ends a little bit... One tenon almost done ( yes, I do Tenons first, then size the Mortises to the tenons) 6 tenons done, almost...( Drawer doesn't get any..) Have that little area right there, that needs pared away...so.. Trimmed it flush...Aprons also needed a bead along the bottom edge...so.. Had 2 Long Beads to do...same bead as is on the legs..just half of one, is all...bottom of aprons do not have a bead. Just where a Bead will show... Short bead...Clear the work area....and.. Set up the Mortise Jig...for tomorrow...unless I get bored tonight... Stay tuned.. Harry Brink, Fred W. Hargis Jr, Gerald and 4 others 7 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted June 11 Author Popular Post Report Posted June 11 We have work to do... have 5 more to do... Then see how to fit in a drawer's parts...so that the drawer front matches the sides... Test fitted last night, while awaiting the Laundry to finish up... Stay tuned... Popular Post steven newman Posted June 11 Author Popular Post Report Posted June 11 Ah one, And a 2.. And a 3... And a 4... Dry fit the back end... Seeing IF I have enough clamps...checked to see how the blank for the drawer will fit.. Need to rip a strip off the bottom and top of the drawer front, to make runners, and dovetail the 2 strips into the legs... Set the mess down on the floor, for now.... Next Task? Drawer Building 101... Stay tuned.. HARO50, lew, Grandpadave52 and 2 others 5 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted June 13 Author Popular Post Report Posted June 13 Needed some parts milled first....Drawer Front was ripped so that I can have a matching lower Divider. Hauled a 1 x 6 x 6' Soft Maple plank to the shop...needed to cross cut and then rip a few parts to size.....Lengths, Widths, Thicknesses... Need to make the parts for the Drawer Guides.. And wound up like this.. Something for the drawer to ride on, and ride against... Drawer parts...2 sides and the back... Needed cut to lengths needed....then.. They needed ripped for width, to match the drawer front...and the back needed a trim to match the drawer front... It a start...the 2 sitting over on the Shop Stool? They will get mitered into corner Braces, that I use to both square up the base during glue ups, but also a way to attach the top to the base.. Tablesaw was a bit busy, today.. So..come Quitting Time ! I moved the Tablesaw back to it's "Home Station", swept the shop floor, and moved the base to a place out of the way.. Stay tuned... steven newman Posted June 14 Author Report Posted June 14 Needed to mill parts for the drawer a little bit better.. From this, to.. This...with the tenons milled to get glued into the legs. Drawer sides and back.. None were the same thickness, they also needed ripped to match the width of the drawer's front... And, the thickness was all the same.. Roughly 1/2" thick...Drawer front will stay at 3/4" thick. Top divider and the Corner Braces needed to be the same thickness as well...Corner Braces? Start with a stick of Soft Maple...make a bunch of 45 degree cuts.. Done on the Bandsaw, so I had to take my time...these go into each corner.. They get glued in place when I glue up the base...clamp? We have ways. #6 x 1-1/4 screws...countersunk, too.... I need to come up with a way to add a bead, to match the rest of the aprons, along the bottom edge of.. Of that bottom Divider....Might be a bit rough to use the #45 on it? We'll see.. Dungeon Creek, due to all the rain this evening.. Left the fan on low...hopefully the floor will be about dry, tomorrow? Next up? Need to detach one table leg..take it to the bench's Mortise Jig..chop 2 small mortises..then repeat for the other front leg...and MAYBE try for a glue-up? Stay tuned.. steven newman Posted June 14 Author Report Posted June 14 had 4 tasks on today's schedule in the shop..got the first 3 done, at least.... Task #1...mill a bead: Jig... Double check that is the correct corner... Appears to be...then, run the Stanley #45 a few times.. Until a bead appears..Task #1 is completed... Task #2....chop 4 mortises....remove one front leg for the dry fitted base...lay out 2 mortises, and proceed to chop and fit.. One done.... Second one done...replace this leg with the other front leg,, and chop a few more holes... Then, a dry fit of the whole mess.. Task #3? Before I can glue this mess together...I need the corner braces made ready... Drilled, countersunk, added the screws, these are ready to go... Task #4.....everything is ready for a glue up, except....me. Does the term "Screaming GIs" ring a bell... IF I can get THAT under control, I might try a glue up later this evening..we'll see. Stay tuned.. Handfoolery, Harry Brink, lew and 1 other 3 1 Quote
