And of course it needed flattened a bit.. then set out a few tools.. Do a wee bit of Lay out... All set for tomorrow's shoptime.. Stay tuned..

March 22, 20251 yr Author Popular Post Backsaw was working fairly decently, yesterday... Black "Lines" are all saw kerfs ( helps to rub a candle along the saw's plate just above the tooth line ) Until.... This got in the way.. So... Move the piece down here, for the last few cuts, then a wee bit of chopping.. Outside face first, chop about half way down..flip over, and finish the chops... Went to transfer the pins to the tail board...Problem? Both the "Inside" face, and the outside face...needed to be a little bit flatter.. THEN I could do a transfer... And a * marks which is the waste....this time around, I use the Bandsaw to remove everything inside those waste lines, trying to leave the lines, as the more of the lines remain, the tight the joint will be... This is right off the saws...half pin on the left is a hair too snug... So, when I return to the shop, today...I fine turn the fit, as Ash does NOT compress the same way that Pine does ( it usually causes splits to happen...) Then I'll try to get the other top corner dovetailed... Bottom will be the Bottom Shelf of the case, and will sit in a dado like the other 2 shelves. That IS the "Plan" at the moment, according to The Single Brain Cell Sketch Up.... Stay tuned..
March 22, 20251 yr Author Popular Post Ok..fine tune a dovetail corner's fit....whether to do the tails.. Couple of, and a paring chisel...or/and.. Clamp the pin board to the side of the bench... And shave back to a line...just for a better dry fit... There, that fits a wee bit better.... Corner #2..... Lay out tools...and then.. Knife a line...back into the vise, but with something "extra".. Keeps the vise from racking...this time around, when I got near the Bandsaw, I stopped, and flipped the part around...and finished up the cuts ( you can see the Corner No. 1 pins down below)... Chopping block, this time around ( saves the top of me bench)had a problem.. Wasn't quite wide enough...we have ways.. Runway is now wide enough, but a bit short...so.. Instead of a "Tailhook" we have a Tail Block....all this just the chop a few pins.. need to then clear the deck...as, side #2 also needed to be flat...show face wasn't too hateful.. But, when flipped over... there was a problem... getting there...even tried a wide bodied smoother... That be my Stanley No. 4-1/2c, Type 11 .... Once both faces were flat, laid out the tail board...making sure everything lines up... And, knife the baseline...even though I almost always seem to abuse Baselines... Bandsaw to remove the waste...then a dry fit..... Corner #2 is in the vise...has a crumb or 2 holding out that corner... Had a floor to sweep up.. And then call it a day...Start time was around 1100 hrs...end time was 1345hrs... From here on out, it will be dados and rebates... Stay tuned...
March 24, 20251 yr Author Popular Post dados? Dados? Them grooves that go across the grain? Many ways to do them, about like everything thing else in woodworking.... But...I needed 6 Dados milled...4 @ 1/4" wide, and 2 @ 3/4" wide....decided to just use the Tablesaw and get them done...so...layouts? Spacing was according to the height of the DVDs...laid the marks out, then transferred them over to the other side panel...made sure they lined up... A few passes on the tablesaw later.. Test fits ...turned out, I NEEDED to flatten the Bottom Shelf a bit... Yes, I used both of these planes. was finally able to set both side panels aside.. While I decide how to attach a back panel to the Case...leaning more towards a rebate, instead of a groove.. Stay tuned..
March 26, 20251 yr Author Popular Post Guess I need to update this a bit? As there is now a glue-up sitting in the shop... Ya think? Problem is...I thought this WAS up to date....Did I lose 3 pages? Anyway, that back needed grooves to sit in...needed 3 grooves..wound up making a fourth one, due to being in too big of a hurry... This one...goes here? Nope... Had to go back and mill that groove on the inside of the top...as for the wayward groove? We have ways.. the grooves for the 2 sides, also had a "moment".. needed to avoid any blow-outs, as this will be part of a foot... 1 Dado needed cleaned out...floor was a bit too rough.. Was then able to cut 3 shelves to proper size...and do a dry fit... Needed to mill a couple filler strips, besides the groove hider..when the glue up happens, they will get glued in place... And, when the clamps come off tomorrow....that one and the one on top will get planed down flush... Had to run to Lowes, today just to buy a 1/4" x 24" x 24" plywood panel, that I only needed half of.. Get it cut to size and fitted... Bottom shelf is glued to the plywood back....Case was done ( so far) without any screws , nor nails..just glue joints... Letting this sit a day...1 hour of shop time today Stay tuned..

I think I see the problem. I think it’s the extra period between clean up and plane work. See if removing that “.” Makes it show up

March 28, 20251 yr Author Popular Post This morning's shop time, involved this plank. In search of some decent lumber..hauled it the shop.. As for that pile over by the Mitersaw.. It appears only the two 1x6s will be of any use... So, needed to trim things down a bit...and adjust a fancy saw.. Wingnuts to tighten the saw blade..mark a cut line..and.. Make a cut... Needed about 25" of 1 x 6..so.. Extension is out 2", in order to just miss a hinge.. Then got out a different saw (easier on the hands) Not the best looking end of a board? handsaw? Disston at one time knew exactly how to shape a saw handle...This is the Disston D-100...7 ppi, 26" length So, from that 25" long section of 1 x 6...this was what I could make use of.. These are 3/4" x 1-1/2" stiles and rails for the DVD case's door...which means I need to get a panel made... Cross cut those two 1 x6s...and see what I can do.. Could be a wee bit better, as I am NOT a fan of spring joints ( bad habit of springing back open?) So...we have ways Checked for gaps... About ready for glue, clamps and cauls? 1st 2 clamps were the "Unders" then flip over and apply the middle upper...then the cauls.. Letting this mess sit a day or two...while I decide on how to build the frame to house this panel.. Stay tuned..
March 30, 20251 yr Author Popular Post 2 hrs in the shop, yesterday...and only got 2 out of 5 tasks done? Task #1: Beads Set up the Stanley 45 with a #22 bead cutter. Fence is set to cover on edge of the cutter Set up a jig.. Run the plane for a bit..depth stop needed adjusting a bit Some of the trips, I was actually going with the grain.. That little knife? Was used to clear any clogs, when I wasn't going with the grain.. Yep...about 8 trips per bead...and I needed 8 beads... Next task...need a groove milled on the edge of each stile and rail..reset the cutter and the fence..for a 1/4" x 1/4" groove.. Attempt to center the groove There IS a fine adjuster for the fence.. Reset the jig for the parts to be stood up on edge, and not flip off the side of the bench Once a groove has started to show, I rub a bit of candle wax into the groove...and hold on tight Once I hit the depth stop ( had to reset it from doing the beads) I check the depth of the groove.. yep, 1/4" deep, checked that the grooves matched up.. And continue to make Maple Noodles.. Needed 4 grooves milled To go with the 8 beads...because, Task #3.. Will be to cut a Mitered, Half Lap joint....like these.. But, after 2 hours IN the shop...about all I felt like was to just sweep up.. "Clean up! Aisle #1!".....and call it a day.. Stay tuned... March 30, 20251 yr Author Popular Post Tasks #4 and #5? will involve this panel.. Needs the clamps & cauls removed, ends squared up, and both faces smooth and flat as I can make them... Then, set up the tablesaw to bevel the best looking face into a Raised Panel....the "other" face will get a Rebate...to better fit into those grooves, that I made yesterday... We'll see how today gets along...stay tuned..
