April 15, 20242 yr Author Popular Post Needed the case out of the clamps, Sunday.. As several items needed cut to size...like a blank for the lid..and a new Drawer front..and.. A drawer back and a pair of drawer sides. Sides got a dovetail lay out.. As the back corners of the drawer will be through dovetails.. Have to work around a rebate for that drawer bottom panel... As the panel will be glued in a rebate all the way around..I did get the plywood cut for length..waiting to find out the width, later.. Front.. and Back get a rebate along the bottom edge.. Plane in use? Craftsman No. 3720 (aka Sargent No. 79, Type 2) that a friend of mine Nickel Plated... Seemed to work out quite well..made a mess on the floor, too.. Was just starting the layout for the front dovetails..when both Brain Pharts, and Toe cramps hit...swept the floor of "Krunchies", and closed up shop.. Today being a Monday...( already cost me a NEW keyboard, @ 0100hrs this morning)...I think unless I get VERY bored this afternoon, shop will stay closed until Tuesday. Stay tuned..

April 16, 20242 yr Author Popular Post I did get very bored yesterday...so, after setting up the new keyboard and mouse...re-thought the front corners a bit....decided to at least try half blind dovetails... Pins were still done at 1/2" long, but once the were chopped.. I then trimmed 1/8" off the end...traced around the pins.. Note, these do not go all the way through...they will stop about 1/8" short.. All marked out...I had to slide this thing out quite a ways..so I could use the dovetail saw...saw at an angle between the 2 base lines ( nicked a couple) Then the chisels took over.. Some spots, just a normal chisel was enough..other spots, like back into those tight corners? At one time, long ago, this was a 1/4" chisel from Harbor Freight..was reground into a triangular shape ( and a bear to sharpen) that better fit into the corners.. Was soon able to do a dry fit.. So that this is what the front of the drawer will look like...then finish cutting the bottom panel to rough width.. Was a bit too tight...plane a bit off the long edge,,NOW it fits.. Glue and clamps then arrived.. there goes the Neighborhood...will wait until later today, to remove the clamps, clean up the dried glue...and see about a knob? Then I can work on that lid.. Stay tuned..

April 16, 20242 yr Author Popular Post Mine joined the "Airborne"...right after he knocked the glass over... Cleaned up the back of the drawer.. Along with both ends, and leveled the top of the drawer.. And around the bottom edges... And a test fit, or 2... Did not run it all the way in, yet... Glued in a strip to support a few chisels.. Drawer needed a knob..re-ground a short knob, and made it a little shorter ( A short Shaker Peg) then found the center of the drawer front.. Cordless drill to drill a mounting hole...glued the knob in place...watching how the knobs grain lines up with the front's.. Will work on that lid, next time in the shop.. Stay tuned..

April 17, 20242 yr Author Popular Post May have been a wee bit too much, yesterday..besides working on that drawer.. This was one of 3 loads hauled upstairs... And this one...because.. Things were getting ankle deep. and a LOT of scraps were building up.. These were covered up...need to be placed back inside the Saw til... Loaded this up 4 times...even stood "Fire Watch" With a cold Guinness in hand... Lot of the scraps were unused for a couple years... Starting to look a little better... so, today the legs are telling me to take the day off...even though I have about 1/3 of a can to burn, yet....with 25mph winds today? Windier than a Senator seeking re-election out there... Paying the bills, today, anyway...legs are too sore to go Rust Hunting... Stay tuned, Spring Cleaning comes to the Dungeon Woodshop

April 19, 20242 yr Author Popular Post Hmmmm...would this be called a Fire Box? Before I went out Rust Hunting today...a wee bit of shoptime... Lid work: Lid needs a rebate milled..like this one.. That way, the "lip" acts as a stop, for when the lid is opened..so.. Tablesaw to make a blade's width cut... Ends needed to be wider than the front/back ones..leave the board just like this.. And start on the end grain first...trick here, is to NOT nick the wall of the rebate, while doing the curved profile of the Thumbnail shape....then Turn the board around, and complete the profile...and hand sand to 220 grit...with the 2 ends done.. Lay the board down, and work on the front and back the same way...Note the shavings in the plane.. Was also trying to get a nice crisp corner detail.. With the lid done..I need stock to make the feet...so.. Ripped a 1 x 1 into 4 pieces...then set up a miter box & saw... Made by GEM...then move a few mitered pieces to the bandsaw... And bandsaw a profile on the non-mitered ends.. will glue these (and 2 more) to the bottom of the case, AFTER the lid is installed... As for the road trip, today? $109 for 2 items.. Iron is a Stanley 2-3/8" iron ( #4-1/2, #5-1/2", #6 and #7)..seems almost new..for $12? Got a 10% discount for the Union No. 41....and it still cost $90? Was out on the lookout for tools the shop doesn't have...and my Stanley No.4-1/2c, Type 11 could use a new iron... Took a LOT of photos, today...may start a thread about that "shopping trip" sometime? Maybe tomorrow, I can install the lid's hinges...and work on the feet a bit more? Stay tuned..
April 19, 20242 yr Author Look up one of those Union No. 41 planes at Jim Bode.....I did see one..for $148....... Somewhere around 1920..Stanley made these planes, BUT..Stanley ground OFF the Union stuff, and filled the void left with Black Japanning..and a Stanley Label...so..this one is from BEFORE the Stanley take-over... Legs ain't letting me move too well, today....was too active yesterday...even hurt just sitting...
April 20, 20242 yr Author Popular Post Was having issues while cutting parts for the feet...trace them down to.. Where the pieces will fold up...it is rounded over...and small parts like for the feet just roll over a bit...decided to complete the feet over on the Bandsaw.. These will be glued in place..4 corners, plus 2 spares, just in case... Hinges: Needed worked on, before I could install them.. Set up a metal working vise... Because these needed to be a bit flatter...the "Before" And the "after" ...then some layout work.. For the lid...and... And matching places on the case...needed hold downs.. . and a couple chisels.. Chop a bit...fit a hinge.. The rebate is clearance for the barrel of the hinge... This was the "easy" part....it was attaching these to the case.. Holding onto a screw, a screwdriver AND the lid, at the same time....and hope the lid shuts... Then decided on a different kind of "Test Fit".. 10 chisels? Plenty of room..closed the lid.. And let this sit a spell..while I run a few errands... Maybe tomorrow, I can ad the feet? Stay tuned..
April 21, 20242 yr Author Popular Post A wee bit of shoptime, today..needed to install some feet onto the bottom of the case...First had to flip the case over ( with the chisels inside?) Small nails and fat fingers...this was getting painful to use.. Even that cross pean tended to pinch a finger...so... We have ways Grab a nail with the pliers...start the nail, then hammer it home...adapted the nail set to better fit the nail.. Parts were sorted through..sanded to clean up a few spots..miters were tuned up..spread a bit of glue, and rub the part into place.. Nails are to act as insurance, for when the case gets scooted across the benchtop...can't use a nail in the front 2.. As by the time the nail gets "set", it might poke through into the drawer... Letting this sit a spell...tomorrow I can level the feet to match each other..a final sanding...and see how a coat of Witch's Brew turns out...maybe a coat or 2 of Amber Shellac on top of that? Stay tuned..
April 23, 20242 yr Author Popular Post Laundry Detail..so...feet got sanded level...until they no longer were "rockers" Witch's Brew Stain was a bit too RED..added the leftover "Special Walnut" stain to the can..and gave it a good stir.....set a plywood sheet on the top of the bench..to check the feet with, and catch any "Runs, Drips, or errors... Front view.. Opened up.. . End view...letting this dry overnight,,,then maybe a coat or 2 of Amber Shellac? Stay tuned...
April 23, 20242 yr Popular Post Love it!! The design of the drawer fitting into the cabinet is really neat.
