Chisel Case Project

Decided to build a case to stash a few chisels in...maybe keep them organized a little bit better?   Box that will be a Pattern of sorts..:ChinScratch:

ChiselCaseProjecttestpattern.jpg.1def25e27a4ed90ec1732ec82e49cdf7.jpg

Is just a smidge too small...so..:ChinScratch:

ChiselCaseProjectlidanddrawerparts.jpg.79ef7f18a066936e1422bb9fbf2e2c9d.jpg

I did have 3 of these in the shop...1/2" x 5-1/2" x 24" Pine...this third one will be a lid, and the rest of the drawer parts...:OldManSmiley:

First few cuts, were for a back, and two ends...:Cheer:

ChiselCaseProjectbackendsbase.jpg.70f3be336ec7185322ce3dcba6466179.jpg

The board underneath was from the second board..:ChinScratch:

ChiselCaseProjectbase.jpg.d9660de0a4ca734662e368a2990cb542.jpg

And will be the "Base" of the box....and on which the drawer will slide on.  :OldManSmiley:

Couple more cuts..

ChiselCaseProject2fronts.jpg.970963bf09335d1e950ac46a0db97c8a.jpg

Drawer front, and the front of the case...was trying to match up the grain..:ChinScratch:

ChiselCaseProjectmatchingthegrain.jpg.cabfd5e5bddab590dad7055a7a797cdf.jpg

Came close?   Turns out that 5-1/2" was a bit TOO tall...decided to lower things about 1/2" or so...:MachineGun:

ChiselCaseProjectallrippedforheightofcase.jpg.f4d7a6590764e1f2ff18280fa7abfd53.jpg

While making sure the fronts stay lined up...:OldManSmiley:

That was about it for today...my "Get&Go...got up and went..."  :SaluteandRun:

Next time in the shop?:ChinScratch:

ChiselCaseProjectstartonanend.jpg.530e1aaa46dd879a9ef180bb6113aeae.jpg

Have some joinery to do...starting with the ends....and connect them to the back..:ChinScratch:

ChiselCaseProjectpatternfortheback.jpg.8d272329a0af1b6ad4fd66b99b4e7c64.jpg

Then connect the front top...then a groove to house the floor of the top compartment...then drawer building 101..:Cheer:

Might take a few days?:WonderScratch:

Stay tuned..:cowboy:

I now have a sore left thumb.  did a test fit of some 1/4" plywood...:ChinScratch:

ChiselCaseProjecttestfitrebate.jpg.7af634fc501d491b9d1348f1ffbf49d7.jpg

So..IF you happen to be inside the drawer, and looking up..this is what you will see..Will glue the panel in place, later

Panel also need grooves to sit in..that line up with that rebate..:WonderScratch:

ChiselCaseProjectmatchedthegrainaroundthecorner.jpg.b5cc0aa602939ee7f843cfa6b25fc53f.jpg

B as in Back...F as in front, and T as in the top of the case..those 2 lines?  Are where a groove will be going.  Was trying to match up the grain so that it "wraps" around the case.:OldManSmiley:

I had just got the grooves milled when The Boss called.:ArguingSmileys:..wanting her Ruku fixed..new batteries. Had to stop the shop for the day, drive down and fix the remote.  Visit for a bit, then head back home...:SaluteandRun:

ChiselCaseProjectlayoutmarkings.jpg.12446604dc58f8fe2ea686164ca55cb9.jpg

This is the other end...:ChinScratch:

Need the grooves and rebate done first, to help lay out the dovetails...going to take a few very fancy cuts.  :WonderScratch:

Stay tuned..:cowboy:

Lay out work..:ChinScratch:

ChiselCaseDovetaillayout.jpg.6a6f5e4bf48bc616e067367ef43920a2.jpg

Need to account for that groove, so that it does not show...

Saw work?:Cheer:

ChiselCaseDovetailhandsaw.jpg.e398961c58f97e3121f033d620ce5655.jpg

Note the other essential tool?  The well worn shop stool.:DevilLaughing:.had to adjust a bit while cutting..

ChiselCaseDovetailadjustonthefly.jpg.5e9a2407adc2b05cb0f3c4ba99dc93f6.jpg

Adjusting on the fly?   The tails will go off of whatever these pins call for.  :OldManSmiley:

Chisel work..:WonderScratch:

ChiselCaseDovetailchoppedhalfway.jpg.b00f0ea220ac4e62d47331ef80fda760.jpg

Chopped half way down, on the show face...to prevent blowouts from the other face being chopped..:OldManSmiley:

ChiselCaseDovetailpinsdone.jpg.5c97577ae03eb532992db8fb934c04fa.jpg

The pin with the groove, will be cut down to fit into another groove..chisel selection, today?:ChinScratch:

ChiselCaseDovetailchiselselection.jpg.84494c258be081df78534f17337964bb.jpg

There is a 24mm one down in the tool well, too.  Use these pins to lay out the tails, cut the tails while leaving the lines..chop out the waste..Dry fit?

ChiselCaseDovetaildryfit.jpg.639ff5d807d56b78802dc17ec4878ec8.jpg

There is no tail at the groove showing...Had to cut the pin down to match the groove.  And, chop out a bit of waste with a chisel..:OldManSmiley:

ChiselCaseDovetailrouterwork.jpg.45510ab23b7359958e66ecd22336a1aa.jpg

Cleaned up with a router.  :JawDrop:

ChiselCaseDovetailstilllinedup.jpg.dc9a83d8088b3a4c380d8ab62b6ef85e.jpg

Set up for tomorrow?

ChiselCaseDovetailtomorrowstask.jpg.7ac583e50946a3f2c5837f59352c30f6.jpg

ChiselCaseDovetailtrickyfront.jpg.2a4450f3f6598b435f91417fef150c92.jpg

There will be a couple dovetails here, but..:ChinScratch:

ChiselCaseDovetailacoverup...jpg.23820bc8add148dbaa771a1012e0a35e.jpg

I still need to cover a groove...Might just cut th black lines first, then lay out the pins...?:WonderScratch:

Stay tuned..:cowboy:

ChiselCaseDovetail3neededamallet.jpg.c2563482dd926ecf1544372eada530de.jpg

All 4 corners are done...:ChinScratch:

ChiselCaseDovetail3needscutdown.jpg.672fae4cbb1998fd6a10544668d33666.jpg

ChiselCaseDovetail3Fenceneedsmoved.jpg.a37435692132374962dbf84a0fb78bdb.jpg

ChiselCaseDovetail3panelahairtoowide.jpg.2aedeab2fb6aa5a8ed539af05a1d176a.jpg

Length was 1/16" too long...width about 1/8"...crosscut half a blade width on the tablesaw...the width?   We have ways..

Today was to be glue up day...didn't happen.   0400 Ser Uncle Charles paid a visit to BOTH legs...each calf had a baseball sized knot from the cramps...0430 I was able to relax them enough to get back to sleep...until 0800 again...so...spent MOST of today just trying to walk...was not working too well.

A very quick trip to the shop, and a very slow return....can't spread the glue because there are zero brushes in the shop to spread it with.   Trip to Harbor Freight to buy more.

between the driving and the walking....legs finally said enough...they hurt from the ankles to just above the hips...

Boss seems to be getting better..and grumpier, too.

Think I will hold off on the glue up, until tomorrow..after a few errands get run..

Stay tuned..

Ser Uncle Charles only saw fit to attack my left foot, this morning...so the Tonic & Gin seems to be working, again.

Brushes to spread the glue around..:ChinScratch:

ChiselCaseGlueupNewBrushes.jpg.fe43a32200de2c412e08ded9274554d8.jpg

While I was there...picked up 5 new sanding belts, for less than Lowes wanted for a single belt..:JawDrop:

ChiselCaseGlueupnewbelts.jpg.31b9caa0283f044da4ea7e767d349894.jpg

Just under $9....you can see the old one under them.  On those glue brushes..I crimp the end of the handle down flat on the bristles, that way they don't "shed":OldManSmiley:

Before the glue, I needed a chisel, or 2...:ChinScratch:

ChiselCaseGlueupbusybench.jpg.b4e7a3d8ce9565bbccf90b1238be0f7c.jpg

As one corner needed pared for a better fit..and..we are off ( or so I have been told )

Needed a couple cauls..:DevilLaughing:

ChiselCaseGlueupCaulsasneeded.jpg.f9ac8fef5f80ac313acfa98e1a6af07c.jpg

On this end, other end was fine..those C clamps?:WonderScratch:

ChiselCaseGlueupclampedthefloorboard.jpg.e801774f48fff2849e40376353e80ff7.jpg

The front edge of the floor board is getting glued into a rebate...was easier than trying to nail it in place..:ChinScratch:

Checked one end for square-ness.:OldManSmiley:

.ChiselCaseGlueuponeendsquared.jpg.1f6dab9b43626bf92293a4743dd227c8.jpg

And might as well check the other end..you never know..:WonderScratch:

ChiselCaseGlueupbothendssquare.jpg.7f24aedb6b664b8cfead97fa52b6740b.jpg

Well, how about that..both ends are square?

The glue up and I will be doing the same thing, the rest of the day...sitting.:Tapping:

Stay tuned...base, lid, and a drawer need to be done...not sure in which order, yet..:cowboy:

ChiselCaseBaseandcleanupbackcleanedup.jpg.ef53c6a7e98ef14fc240462acef60bba.jpg

And the front, too....ends were cleaned up..

ChiselCaseBaseandcleanupendsdone.jpg.17d57e42ea7e83c0689d2b0c2f5500c0.jpg

and the top edges were leveled..:ChinScratch:

ChiselCaseBaseandcleanuptopleveled.jpg.abb4f9f8a4e680e3e6b6a61328b50f87.jpg

That old Stanley No. 3 was getting a workout today...:Cheer:

Next...needed to flatten the panel that will be the base..:SaluteandRun:

ChiselCaseBaseandcleanupflattenthebase.jpg.e2d4287091b6b96ac9b05a7153cb4a8c.jpg

Had to do both faces, too...was beginning to wonder who was getting the workouts...that plane, or me?:WonderScratch:

Paul Sellers did a "thumbnail" edge on his, so..start here..:ChinScratch:

ChiselCaseBaseandcleanupstarthere.jpg.2caad949b771085adba4e1578cdb4a07.jpg

Establish a 45 from the center, then roll the plane down to a stop line...do the end grain ends first..rotate..:OldManSmiley:

ChiselCaseBaseandcleanupshortendsdone.jpg.903d17f8b6004e03377a8773496bf4ab.jpg

And do both the top and bottom edges..of both of the ends..rotate again...and do the long grain edges..

ChiselCaseBaseandcleanuplongedgedone.jpg.9a4b4936075f864e850aaae0d1f59259.jpg

Each edge then get hand sanded, with 80 grit, then 220 grit. :JawDrop:  Tools?

ChiselCaseBaseandcleanuptools.jpg.35b0105fa049b91b81502b8cba42ca1e.jpg

Spokeshave where the grain allowed.  Square to mark the stop lines.  A No. 80 was used on flattening the flat areas..:OldManSmiley:

Next? spread a bit of glue..:SaluteandRun:

ChiselCaseBaseandcleanup3rdhand.jpg.703f025b44a2ec29b60013dcab31bccb.jpg

A caul to help out along the front..where the glue was just on the end pieces...vise was a 3rd hand...around in back..

ChiselCaseBaseandcleanupbasegluedinplace.jpg.6e87266484378ec738889d99e16112ad.jpg

Clamp on each end, and one in the middle..Mallet to adjust alignments..:OldManSmiley:

Will let this mess sit a spell, and me too...

I wonder IF that old plane gets cramps in it's toe?  :DevilLaughing:

Stay tuned..:cowboy:
