May 17, 20233 yr Author Popular Post Glue-up Wednesday... Front view. Seat slats will need a trim.. . First of 6 joints, to get 2 pins... I did indeed use a couple for one clamp.. Guinness Draught Stout is in use, now...
May 18, 20233 yr Author Test drive involved actually sitting my fat foundation down on the seat....not a sound was heard, BTW. Headed back to the shop in a bit...had to come back upstairs, cool off, Hydrate..and get the Camera Will be back with a PIP.....while I decide what flavour of finish to add to the bench... Stay tuned..
May 18, 20233 yr Author Popular Post Test drive? 235 pounds worth.. Tired? From un-clamping this morning to completion..one hour....About time for a Guinness? Arm rests were glued AND wedged.. And in the back... Other arm rest has a single screw...the second one here is to repair a split... Pins have been installed... There are 2 pins in this photo....yes, there are... Ok, move me out of the way.. Middle seat support details.. Random spacing..meh...no glue was used...(Boss is going to cover this seat with cushions, anyway..) End view? Details at the ends of the seat slats...( had to leave the arm rests off, more room for the drill) Once the seat was installed, THEN I could add the arm rests... Decided the "horns" of the back were too tall...shortened them by 2"...then used a second router.. To round things off...router table was used to round-over the seat slats' top edges. Construction is now done....needs a bit of sanding...the see about adding a finish.. Is the Ash table that has sat out in the Gazebo since it was built LAST year...and what I will be trying to match the Bench to. Stay tuned...

May 18, 20233 yr Author Stain has now been bought, along with 4 brushes....and a set(4) of nail-on foot pads...to keep the end grain feet OFF of the concrete patio... On the way to Lowes, stopped at an Antique Store....picked a couple $5 chisels....I think I am about done, for today BTW....Still have one plank @1 x 6 x 5'....and enough "scraps" to keep me in the Box Making Business for a while...

May 20, 20233 yr Great looking bench Steve. Time to load up a cooler full of Guinness & enjoy the bench.
May 20, 20233 yr Author Test run...(still IN the shop..) Lot of glare from the overhead lights....need to stain the ends...the back..and the underside Intend to add these to the feet... Keeps the end grain of the feet off of the concrete patio....feet last longer, that way... Have to stand the bench up on one end...do what I can reach...turn it around do the back and underside....then rotate and do the other end....Hopefully a Quart of Minwax "Gunstock" stain will be enough...
May 21, 20233 yr Author Popular Post Took a bit of work, and a Makita Sawzall...but.. The English Garden Bench is now out in the backyard patio...awaiting a spray on varnish...before it gets moved into the Gazebo... There are plastic pads to isolate the wood from the concrete. View of the back.... That RED slat was sapwood...Like a sponge, was unable to lighten it up...
