Popular Post steven newman Posted May 4, 2023 Author Popular Post Report Posted May 4, 2023 Back between the shoulder blades has decreed that is is QUITTING TIME! task was to get 3 Rails ready... 3 rails, split ends removed...cut down to 48" length... Then mill a 3/4" long tenon on each end.. I also ripped things to width,,then the tenons could be cut... This is the Front rail, goes under the front edge of the seat,, This one goes at the back of the seat....a row of slats will connect it to the crest rail...which needed a shape bandsawn to it.. A bit rough? We have ways... Spokeshave! Was trying to remove a few high spots, as well as the saw marks.. Then turn this around, and do the other curved section... Edges that needed to be straight..needed jointed...issues with the No. 8c....tried Junior Jack first.. Resolved the issues with the Jointer plane( clogged mouth, chips lodged between the iron and chipbreaker) Then put it to work... Maybe tomorrow..I can lay out 6 mortises..chop a few...then see about a glue up of the end frames? Stay tuned... lew, Harry Brink, Cal and 5 others 7 1 Quote

Will do the other front post, tomorrow.. Need to add a kerf for a wedge,later... Task #2...lay out 6 mortises...to house the 3 rails in... Lay them out on one frame...then transfer the markings to the other frame's parts... Task #3....chop 3 mortises...to 3/4" depth.. With just a couple chisels... Both are 12mm wide...pencil came in handy, too...dry fit? Front rail..goes under the front of the seat.... Tenons on the rails will be trimmed down to 3/4" length...will be getting a dowel through them, anyway.. Figured it would be easier to chop these mortises out, BEFORE a glue up could happen...don't have enough room to chop after a glue up Task #4..glue one frame up.. Add the 3rd clamp.. pulling for square....front to back at the seat=19-1/4"...have to pull the feet in until front to back was also 19-1/4" Back is hurting, right between the shoulder blades....working to hard for a Friday? Popular Post steven newman Posted May 6, 2023 Author Popular Post Report Posted May 6, 2023 Bench Frame #2 is in the clamps... was the only way to set #1 on the bench #1 can stand on the floor on it's own.. There is a spot where 2 rails meet,,, That I will have to notch a bit....will notch the back rail... 90 minutes today..I am sore....tenon was sawn... with handsaws.... First pass with the Japanese chisel.. Hammer is a 24oz ....5 good whacks, move a bit, repeat.....takes about 4 passes to get to 3/4" depth... Depth checker...Narex was used to clean out the chips.... Kind of hard to do dry fits... When the other end is 4' away....once the last mortise was chopped, and a dry fit... Need to trim and square a few tenons.... I could start to glue this frame up...without any gaps...3rd clamp was to pull the feet square...19-1/4" at the seat, and at the feet..let this sit a day.. Next? Square up the tenons. then see about slats for the back of the seat... Stay tuned.. BTW....The Boss went and BOUGHT this other thing... steven newman Posted May 7, 2023 Author Report Posted May 7, 2023 Task for today: mill 15 slats, for the back of the bench....1/2" x 2" x 24-1/4" with 3/8" long tenons on each end... Rough sawn.. Set up to resaw to 1/2" thick.. So, now I have 15 slats ... just over 2" wide, and a bit un-even as to 1/2" thick... Flatten the cut side....a quick zip along the "bad edges with the saw set to exactly 2" wide..... The "cut-offs"? Stashed until the next Box Build Project...Need tenons on the ends.. All set up... He's about my height and towers over his wife standing, but sitting, they are the same height. So much for the DaVinci Vitruvian Man. Oh, back on topic. I had some ash that sat outside and it did not last long. Be sure to put on a good finish (or paint). At the house last week, I thought we were putting up siding as rough cut cedar, but the homeowner said it was white pine. Upon closer examination, I think he was right, he got it from a local (2.5 hour away) sawmill. Hope it works. Unfortunately, the prior crew seemed to put in too many screws to allow for the freshly cut wood to shrink without cracking. I hope it works OK for them. We have a mother and daughter at our church that define morbidly obese. I think the daughter is still gaining weight. Her upper arms are bigger than my thighs by a wide margin. Have to head back down there, and move the clothes from the washer to the dryer in a little bit....might take the camera along? I prefer the height of a seat to hit about the back of my knees...easier to get back out of a chair that way......so, when I go looking at new chairs for the house..I always check where the seat comes up to...too low,, pass it by... lew, Cal and Grandpadave52 3 Quote

Space between#13 and #15 was a bit wide....sat #14 centered between them...tools have been laid out.. 1/4" Witherby. Mortise gauge has been set to match the chisel... Hopefully, I can use the Mortise Jig...Maybe? Both frames...was test for with of slats....2" will be a tad too skinny....may try a bit closer to 3"? Supper tonight involved this guy.. Anyone know this guy? Might be a LOT of chopping going on, tomorrow? Maybe a bit of cussing, too? Going to be "fun" clamping down the Crest Rail... Stay tuned..( ear plugs may be a required item?) Bottom rail is done..15 Mortises total.... Aligned up the mortises to the Crest Rail... Lay out the new mortises... Was trying to find a way to clamp this TO the bench... . Then see how far I'd get... 6....before Ser Uncle Charles dropped by....and hit the hand holding the chisels.... Left hand cramped up too much to hold a chisel...Breaktime! when I started the clothes washer, today...it read 152 minutes.....when I had to stop for the cramps..it read 41 minutes remaining...busy day? Forgot how bloody LOUD this thing is...and, IF you pause even for a split second..there WILL be a burn mark...decided something else was needed. to do these edges.. Maybe something in a Cordless....hmm Seymour Smith & Son, Double Spokeshave? A little sanding, good to go. With the router table, I'd have to run each corner at a time..four trips like this... And..still have to sand things smooth,,and burn-free Spokeshave will do 2 corners at a time. Plus, I am not waking up the entire house, either....15 slats? We'll see... Stay tuned.. steven newman Posted May 11, 2023 Author Report Posted May 11, 2023 Snuck back down to the shop for a little bit last night...and completed 4 slats.....makes 6 so far..only 9 more to go... Will be yanking that router bit out, and seeing IF it can be sharpened...( the Carbide version in the shop has a bearing on it's end) Need to use the router on the 2 frames, and the crest rail.....Seat slats can wait a day....have to mill them first....and an Arm rest or 2...
