Popular Post steven newman Posted April 26, 2023 Popular Post Report Posted April 26, 2023 While Norm used Teak for the bench he built in the New Yankee Workshop....I just don't have his budget.....so.. I think Ash will do nicely enough...as this bench will reside in the Gazebo, instead of Russ Morash's Garden..... Need to clean off the bench in my shop, first...then some layout work for the 2 back legs....need 4 pieces, as I will be gluing the legs up from 2 pieces. have to figure a good height for the seat....to locate where to start the bend for the back of the bench.... Stay tuned.... Grandpadave52, KevTN, Cal and 4 others 7 Quote

Popular Post steven newman Posted April 26, 2023 Author Popular Post Report Posted April 26, 2023 Calm before the storm? (Currently figuring on 20" seat height...can always adjust it lower as needed..) Will need 3 items left out.. Spent most of the shop time wrestling... To get the bandsaw to where I could make a cut, without banging into other items in the shop..note the floor? Had to sweep things up..twice.... Will be cutting these up...after the pattern is done... 1/2 of one back leg....give me a bit... Time for ONE glue-up.... Tomorrow, the other back leg gets glued up.....was out of clamps, anyway.... When both back legs are done with the glue ups...will clamp both together and beltsand/plane until they match each other...while I work on the 2 front legs.... Stay tuned... steven newman Posted April 27, 2023 Author Report Posted April 27, 2023 Nope...got it from a friend of mine....he has had these planks in the barn for over 10 years, now... 14 planks, @ 1 x 6 x 5'......after I had to cut the down to fit IN my car... As 10' was a bit too long.... Along with a bit of Cardio..to boot.. lew, Grandpadave52, Cal and 1 other 4 Quote

steven newman Posted April 28, 2023 Author Report Posted April 28, 2023 Pictures from last night.. Will be a couple front legs? Needs a wee bit of clean up...BEFORE a plane is allowed to travel here...we have ways.. Cleans it right up....tried 2 different planes... Junior jack was...ok...but.. Clamped both back legs together...it was a bit too wide for Junior...so... Heft & Hubris..aka Stanley No. 8c..... Seemed to work quite well...on this edge...it is when I flip this over to do the inside curve, that I may need the Drawknife, again....and some new belts for the beltsander Drawknife is an 8" Fulton....may give the 6" Pexto a go, later... Shave Horse? Stay tuned... Cal, KevTN, Grandpadave52 and 1 other 4 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted May 1, 2023 Author Popular Post Report Posted May 1, 2023 Back legs are now done... Hardest spots to work on ....was at that bend in the road....(beltsander) and rounding the top to match each other.. Sunday...was work on the blanks for the front 2 legs... Had 2 planks in the shop for that.... Here are 2 of the blanks..the other 2? Are now sitting in the clamps. I also kept the 4 cut-offs.. Will glue these up into the curved seat supports for each end of the bench Waiting on 4 items..while the glue cures... Stay tuned... Cal, Gene Howe, Gerald and 2 others 5 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted May 2, 2023 Author Popular Post Report Posted May 2, 2023 Front legs are out of the clamps....they have a taper detail on the inside face... That needed cleaned up so they match each other... Hardest part was getting the curves to match up.. Then the front of both legs... Work in progress. Top of the legs will get a tenon, later...to attach the arm rest to.... Laid out a curve... While I was cleaning up the seat supports....as They needed to be squared up, and cut to length...then the curve was bandsawn.. Along with those tenons.. Bottom of the front legs also needed squared up. Was a busy Laundry Detail, today.....toes started to get cramps...decided to quit for the day... And do Mortises tomorrow... Moose & Squirrel did drop off a "plan" of sorts... "Page 1" I think? Stay tuned... Gene Howe, lew, Grandpadave52 and 3 others 5 1 Quote

Popular Post steven newman Posted May 2, 2023 Author Popular Post Report Posted May 2, 2023 In a bit of a rush...so... 1st mortise...wasn't staying still. so.. Moved things to the top of the bench...managed to get a dry fit...then transfer the lay out lines to the back leg.. This is right on the curve....was a bit tricky to chop down 1" deep...but... We getting there....yes, I used THAT hammer..dry fit... Then set it down on the floor.. Then tried a dry run with the clamps.. 2 mortises are done....have a bunch more to do....
