October 20, 20223 yr Author Web Frame work, today...had a couple planks to rip down.. Looks nice, don't it? Note that red line? Hmmm, yeah...Rip fence set to 1-3/8" width..and see what happens. . Next...need 8 rails at 12-9/16" long..cross cut one end square, then cut to length.. Need to make a test piece/pattern.. Because I need 16 tenons milled... using the tablesaw... With the fence more as a stop block than a guide...next...need 8 stiles cut to 17-1/8" long.. Which then need a groove milled, so... Set this up to mill a groove..something like this.. And..make sure it fits the tenons...or, is it the other way around... Time for a little assembly? 4" needle nosed pliers saves me thumb...fine tune the fit on a few places...chisel kept trying to find a finger to "trim" too...5/8" #18 nail in each joint..trying to keep these as square as I can....hmmm... 4 web frames...clamped up to each other ...trying to even things out flat... Trying to close up any gaps, before the glue gets set in it's ways... These 4 frames are what the 4 drawers will be sliding on....they also are a place to attach the plywood back of the case to...and connect the 2 sides of the case....normally there would be a 5th frame...if for nothing else than a place to add the kicker for the top drawer....have come up with a different way Stay tuned...
October 21, 20223 yr Author After all that running around this morning...need to remove all of these clamps... Set them inside face to inside face..and clamp them back together...and see how they looked.. Edges needed to be jointed, until they matched up....as for the top of them... Could be a little bit better? Junior tried to joint the edges...he really did.. But..sometimes ya just have to call in the Pros.... This is what it was designed to do..besides making shavings.. Mutt ..vs..Jeff? Stanley No. 8c..or Millers Falls No.11....Got this edge pair all nice and straightened out...keeping things clamped together, flip this over.. And Joint this edges as well...beltsander took care of the top edges.. So, that should do this, for now.. Leave a few clamps in place, set this aside, for now....I did get out and set up one other plane.. Because when I decide which will be the back of the case...those will get a 1/4" deep rebate, to house the 1/4" Luann Plywood I bought today, to be the back of the case. As for kickers for the web frames? Resawn some scraps to 1/2" thick... There IS a fourth one.. These will get glued and screwed in place...they are what keeps a drawer from tipping down..they go under a webframe, to run against the top of the drawer below. Resaw? That reminds me..after about a week of hiding inside a bandage... Seems to be healing up nicely enough...note the floor? Working way too hard, for a Friday... Stay tuned...

October 22, 20223 yr Some fancy looking grain in those panels. This is going to be a reel purdy dresser, chest of drawers, Chester drawers, well a place to put someone's drawers
October 23, 20223 yr Author Popular Post Ever try to work in the shop, when things just want to fight whatever it is that you want to do... Saturday Fights Decided to plane the rebates to house the case's back panel.. had a lot of trouble getting the No.78 set up just right....and keeping it on track to where it needed to be....then, when I used the plywood scrap to check the depth settings... found a few places where the plane had taken a left turn...Hence the hammer, chisel and the router plane... I also found a few high spots, and the thumb found a splinter.. Somehow managed to get both rebates done...decided to layout for a sabre saw cut...got the tools out.. That compass was having "issues", after doing just one arc...fired it. Got out a better WORKING one... One laid out 3 more to do. Sabre saw is an all metal POWR KRAFT. Blade was having issues making the turns.. Spent a bit of time, getting all 4 web frames to match each other....Plan was to start installing them, now that the rebate is done...as they back up to the rebate, to allow a face frame out in front.... That WAS the plan...I thought it would be nice to at least pre-drill the holes....and countersink them a bit, hmmm... Glue and screws. Note the counter-bores are bit toasty? As for the drill bit? Burnt...Had a second drill handy...with a decent bit...until THAT drill decided to bounce off the shop floor...and snapped that drill bit right off. Tossed the remainder out, dug out another...drilled the holes anyway...and counter-bored them.. Have the bottom frame installed..the next one up pre-drilled..was getting tired of walking on a crunchy floor... Decided I had just enough "fun" for today...so I swept the floor, and called it a day....Some days are like that.. Stay tuned...
October 23, 20223 yr Author OK...getting mean, today....All-in-one drill ready? Found the other insert for the smaller screws, too...pilot hole drill ready? Kickers installed? Screws and glue...square to check things....second frame installed.. Again, a square to make sure it IS square across...once the other 2 frames are installed....needed to transfer the lay out lines across to the other panel.. Then flip side #1 over onto side #2...with a bead of glue on all the connecting parts..then drive a few screws...one frame needed to be pulled into place.. And then a screw to keep it there....then, somehow stand this entire mess up on the floor.. And see how well it will stand up on it's own 4 feet. Waiting on the glue to cure, now. Next up? A back needs to go on, and then a face made...and dovetailed in place...and then see about a top? Boss says I need to do a Road Trip..TODAY....taking the GrandBRAT back home.. Stay tuned...
October 23, 20223 yr Don't you just love it when that drill bounced the last time and now no bounce and broken bit. I dropped a Jacobs with a expensive Forstner in it and broke the stem.Oh well life is too short
October 26, 20223 yr Author Back is now on.. Top frame was cobbled together.. Hand chopped socket for the tails to slip into... Kicker for the top drawer..was attached to the back rail, that also holds the top edge of the case's back panel..other end of the kicker? Counter-bored hole, will plug later..Rest of the front rails were also installed by dovetail.. Got the last of those done last night.. Then, this afternoon, removed the clamps, cut a profile along the bottom rail...with an old Sabre saw.. Before I could level all the rails to the sides of the case... Needed a mitre box... To make the corner blocks... Then milled the slots to attach the top of the case with.. Top is attached by screws in these slots...slot allow the top to "move" as the seasons change... Question now is...make the top next, or the 4 drawers next? Hmmmm...have to see what the lumber supply says... Stay tuned..
October 27, 20223 yr Author These were all cut from the same plank.. Top for the case needs just 3 of these.. task was to choose the 3 best...and save the 4th for a bread board edge blank Meh...trying to get the best grain match....trying.... Bread board end stock... needed to get the edges ready for glue....Moxon called it a "Gluing Plane".. Stanley No. 8c Jointer is what Stanley called it...first edge looked good, onto the next one.. No gaps? That "^" is to help line up all 3 boards.. got all 3 boards ready...made some cauls. while I was ripping the bread boards to width. Got up a brush for the glue, a few clamps and 4 cauls... And let this sit a day...as for the 2 blanks? I think these will do the job....edges needed cleaned up a bit.. We have ways.. . making some shavings.. And that will do for this morning's work session...Sea Food Noodle Soup for Lunch.... Stay tuned..
October 28, 20223 yr Author 4 blanks to make the fronts of 4 drawers....something to do while waiting on glue to cure...I needed one edge jointed, first..after they were cut roughly for length...so I need this one edge, so the others could be 4-squared off of it...kept track of which edge was jointed... With a big "J" on that edge...then the tablesaw to cross cut one end square...mark the other end to length...and cut that...then set the rip fence to rip a parallel edge on all 4 blanks... All 4-Squared, now....then reset the tablesaw to bevel the outside face into a raised panel Then reset again to make a rebate on 3 edges...took 2 different cuts...this is one...then set up to remove the waste on the flat.. The edge without the rebate is the drawer's bottom edge....3/4 Overlay is the term...got all 4 drawer fronts milled They still need a groove to house the plywood bottom panel....and they need half blind dovetails on the ends.... Today? Need to remove a few clamps and cauls..square a panel..add a tongue to both end grain ends...and install the bread board ends with a groove in the BB ends...without working too hard for a Friday... Stay tuned

October 29, 20223 yr Author Clamps are coming off, today.. Need to clean up the edges. a bit.. There are also 8 drawer sides milled up and waiting.. All cut for length, and sized to match the front of the drawers Need to dig out the router table Don't need that mitrebox, though. I DO need the router bit....and need to exchange it for a dovetail bit, but.. It all the way back in a corner....have a lot of things to move around, today... ( I just MIGHT have too many MitreBoxes?)
October 29, 20223 yr Author case work... Case work.. Case work.. Case work... Top shaped and attached..front.. And in the back... Stand this up and do the top's edges... Dug the router table out.. Changed the bit.. And re-did the start and stop lines... As I had a bunch of these to mill... 4 drawer fronts...5 sockets on each end = 40 cuts...most of the time spent was in moving the fence to the next spot/cut Drawer Build 101 is about to start..
October 30, 20223 yr Feeling the pressure with only 2 days left? Bandit's using tools with tails. We better head to our safe places. Edited October 30, 20223 yr by Grandpadave52
October 31, 20223 yr Author Tails were bandsawn..then the waste was chiseled out.. The "before"...and.. The "After" so, where do I set these fronts, after both sides were dovetailed.. No backs, yet...just the fronts and the sides... Getting there... One more to go... Almost seems a shame to have to knock these back apart, but... We have work to do.. Don't have the router bit to match this set-up...so.. Fronts and side get a 1/4" x 1/4" groove, about 1/4" above the bottom edge. The Pine was a tad better to do.. Made a lot of curlies.. 12 grooves is what I needed to make...wound up doing one extra...because one side was labeled wrong...so now it has two grooves.. I had thought about using the other 45... As I needed dados to house the backs of the drawers....after hauling a plank to the shop for the 4 backs...and cutting them to size...decided to use the tablesaw for the dados... 6 out of 8 dados...and... 3 out of 4 drawer backs.....so, where is the rest of the parts? Right here, with a bottom panel, waiting on glue to cure.... Been checked for square ( got lucky?) One down..3 more to do... Stay tuned...
November 1, 20223 yr Author Ah one.. And a 2 And a 3 and a 4 Need to be out of the clamps cleaned up , sanded smooth...and knobs installed...maybe this afternoon?
November 1, 20223 yr Author Ready for the PIP? Top view... Side view...still trying to find a flat spot on the floor...and... Had the plug cutter running, today, too... Edges of the drawer sides were rounded over.. Inside and out. dovetails have been spruced up.. Couple of the drawer bottoms needed planed.. To level things out... Corned Beef Hash for Lunch...then maybe a NAP?
