October 10, 20223 yr Popular Post So..although I still have 4bft of Maple left.... 5' against the wall, 2' on top..the rest of this stack is Ash 1 x 6s, there are 8 planks, at 1 x 6 x 4' There is a 1 x 6 x 5' and two at 1x 6 x 6'.... Plan right now, is to set up to replace an OLD Chest of Drawers....that I made from scraps about 20-30 years ago...back in the Pole Barn Shop days... drawer fronts are 3/4" plywood, wrapped with pine.. Thinking something like this will look better? have to work around a couple bad spots...might use that maple for the top...or..the drawer fronts? we'll see...
October 11, 20223 yr Popular Post I'll take a ticket please. Asking for a friend, will there be restroom breaks?
October 11, 20223 yr Author Popular Post Waiting on the bench to get cleared off...and a Plan to be Delivered by M&S Express ( Moose & Squirrel) Might give the Tablesaw a workout, later....have 3 loads for the Laundry Detail..TODAY... Stay tuned
October 11, 20223 yr Popular Post 3 loads of laundry should add enough humidity to the dungeon to be unbearable. Take the day Steve. We can wait. Besides, isn't there a Guiness or two in the fridge? Or do you take them warm?
October 11, 20223 yr Author Popular Post Brits MIGHT like them warm....I prefer mine Ice Cold......Thinking an ice cold Tonic & Gin for later....
October 11, 20223 yr Author Popular Post Ve Haft Plan.. At least Page 1? Bench has been cleaned off.. Right down to the tool well... Then promptly covered back up... First 3 out of 8 1 x 6 x 4' planks...not the best of the bunch..might be able to cut a few Stiles & Rails out of these 3... Have to work around a few places.. This might take a bit of work...Middle one looks more like firewood... I think I can work around that...as for Laundry Detail... one in the washer, one in the Dryer....#3 has been postponed a day... Stay tuned..
October 12, 20223 yr Author Popular Post Laundry Detail is done...sawdust has been made... Between the Tablesaw and... Was a bit too toasty in the shop for hand saws...2 blanks to make 4 Stiles, I hope.. Even got a start on the Rails... Will need to haul one more plank to the shop...TOMORROW...I am worn out, right now Will work on the frames, first..and then see about the 8 panels I need to do.... Stay tuned...
October 12, 20223 yr Author Will take a couple days off...due to the Tablesaw getting a bit hungry... Got the 4 stiles cut to size.. Just a tad too thick...then got all the rails cut to size.. Width and length...also a bit too thick...decided to skin them all down to 3/4" thick..over on that tablesaw... Was down to just the last stile...started it through....was trying to keep it press against the rip fence Thumb was pressing down on the top edge...but..finger got a bit too far down... OUCH! Just nicked the end of the social finger...ploughed a groove right across the end...couple layers deep.. The iodine and the superglue burned worse than the saw blade did...Trip to Urgent Care Center...no stitches, but..OW!.. Will take a couple days off, I guess... Stay tuned..

October 14, 20223 yr Author Popular Post Ok...when I got back home, found that I had left the camera in the shop...went to go and bring it back upstairs....Then I remembered that old saying.. "If ya git thrown off the horse, get back up, dust yourself off, and git right back on that horse.." So..watching where I sat my fingers this time around...I finished up the last Stile...then reset the saw...had to set up for ploughing the grooves.. had a couple tools around to help out.. YES, I do indeed use a pushstick. Height gauge to set the blade to 1/4"...combo square to set the fence 1/4" away from the blade...and ran a few test shots... Push one through, rotate 180 and run it back through...second one to confirm...will run the rest of the parts through Thursday... Thursday: first set up is done. Move the fence to saw the center rib out...and it also took two trips.. some better than others..can clean up the stiles, later. the skinny middle rails? All 6 of them..since there will be a panel on either side of these..they get double the fun.. Reset the saw...removed the Overlay, as I was going to use the mitre gauge...with the fence as a Stop block...first try to mill a tenon..blade was way too high..lowered the blade, and try again..test fit.. The tenon will be down in a mortise, later. Got the rest of the tenons milled.. Will need that chisel to clean them up. So..how does that short tenon reach down into a mortise? we have ways...clip the corners on the rails..match the stiles to the cut profile... I will need to run the router table, this weekend. A small round-over will be going along the outside faces of both the rails and the stiles...so when everything is clamped up..the raised panels will be sitting in a picture frame...once the frames are glued up, intend to continue the round-over onto other places...like the curved feet... Stay tuned...
October 15, 20223 yr Author Popular Post Calling today Freaky Friday ( spelling has been changed, of course ) Because after all that trouble to get 4 planks planed...you'd think I would have got the hint? Got home, sorted to get the best one of the 4 planks, and hauled it to the shop. Needed ONE plank to help layout the spacings of the rails... The rest can wait a bit.. Cleared off the tablesaw..and laid out a few parts... used that 5-3/4" wide panel to start laying things out...was going good, until I reach the bottom.. And, thanks to a foot profile..there wasn't enough room for 5-3/4"....more like 5"...maybe....grrr, reversed course, and worked my way back up to the top..and . yep, 5" panel will work. moved all of this over to the bench... Trying to keep all these parts ON the bench..is about the same as herding Cats....Cut the plank down into the rest of 4 panels...some needed wavy edges removed...but.. Need to haul another plank, when I start on the other frame...for now, this will do, to build one frame. Moved the tablesaw out of the way (barely) and bring out a different sort of "table" Shop-built stand, with a SKIL Router Table...with an all metal B&D 1/4" Router....the kind that take 2 wrenches to change a bit. It had a dovetail bit still in the collet..and the wrenches didn't seem too willing to work, today....Finally, after picking one or both OFF the floor for the 4th time...and NOT throwing the wrenches into the trash can...dovetail bit has been exchange for..something else Router table takes the same fence as the tablesaw...except, NOW I needed to bury a pilot..which took a chisel or two..and the bench vise... task was to run all the parts through this bit.. Some, more than once...the middle rails and the bottom rails were twice, top rails and the stiles just once rails, and.. Stiles...only on the outside face...don't need it on the inside of the case. Have the spacings laid out, edges molded...time to do a few mortises? Well, the last time this Mortise Jig was used, the parts were a bit thinner...had to adjust the spacings a bit.. Although I used the same square fro marking out all the 45 degree cuts... Something wasn't coming up just right...tried again..twice..was even getting worse... STOPPED..right there....checked on the dust collector.. On the way out of the shop. and called it a day. Maybe tomorrow..I'll just raise panels, instead...while I figure out what is going on... As THAT will not do. Stay tuned..
October 15, 20223 yr Author Popular Post Decided to try a different way, to get better miters on the rails, as the bandsaw wasn't getting it done, correctly...so Tilt the blade over to 45 degrees..use the mitre gauge to nibble a little bit at a time, until I like it...Make a mark on the top of that fence where to STOP the rail at...then run ALL the rails through....so that they will all be the same....then chop out #3 and try a dry fit.. Close...had a high spot... Rail #4? Made the mistake of cutting the recess on the stile over at the tablesaw..did NOT go well....about an 1/8" TOO WIDE ( will fill in during the glue-ups...so, time for the bottom rail..back to old school.. Mark a line, handsaw the line, chisel to remove the waste.. Dry fit shows where to pare a bit...red lines show where a foot profile will be cut..hopefully a lot better than this computer mouse can draw.. Full dry fit, for now.. Will use this stile to lay out the rest of the 3 ...and hopefully a lot better layouts will happen.. Stay tuned..
October 16, 20223 yr Author Popular Post Ok...last night...clamped this assembly to the other 3 stiles. Inside face to inside face sort of thing..made sure they all matched up, length wise....then using the rails..and a square.. Marked layout lines across all of the other stiles...it just looks better when things are lined up the same... Stile #2: Removed from this mess, placed on the bench...use the square to lay out the miter cuts, and how deep to cut...then.. A handsaw...leave the lines..and a chisel or 2 to remove the waste, and pare to the bottom of the groove...then lay out for the top rail's mortise.. A few tools to do some chopping.. Doesn't take too long... Test the fit? Stile is a hair thicker than the rail...as for if things do not line up just right...we have ways.. Run a fine toothed saw down inside the joint... And check the fit again..sometimes , it is just a crumb in the bottom of the mortise... Kept working my way towards the "foot" A little rough? It is on the inside of the chest, a drawer will be the only one to see it. BUT, I think I might be getting the hang of doing these.. Maybe? Lastly, the bottom rail, again Last time, I used the handsaw... Then tried the bandsaw to remove the waste..meh.. A little too wavy...this time around..just a wide chisel and pare to the bottom of the groove.. Looks a little better...Stile #2 is done.. So...Dry fit the entire frame together,,,about like herding Cats..Maybe later today, I can start on Stile #3? Stay tuned..
October 18, 20223 yr Author Popular Post Side 2 is done...frame wise.. So..now I think I can start on raising the panels....once I get all 8 to size...I need to set up the Zero Clearance Overlay and tilt the blade to.. May be a bad sign? 13 degrees? Raised the blade up through the overlay, slowly... Fence is 1/2" away from the bottom of the blade.. Run all 4 edges through x 8 panels..makes for a large pile of scraps... Along with all the ones that fell to the floor...Next? Need a 1/4" x 1/4" rebate run around...first cuts.. After returning the blade to 90 degrees, set the fence to make a rip cut ...run all the edges through...waste side to the fence..next...remove the overlay.. Lower the blade a bit..and run all the edges through, again...this time, laying flat...results? For all 8 panels.....Then clean off the tablesaw...time to herd some Cats... This is about the 3 or 4th try...no glue, yet..just a dry fit....top and bottom panels were to wide....Wards 78 to correct that..try again.. Not quite there yet...Hmmm...stand this mess up and see what the problem is... Ok.. Panels are a bit too LONG....means I need to take this all apart...shorten all the panels...and try again....Side #2 will be following along...getting all the bugs out with side 1....I hope....Have Laundry detail today...will put me in just the right mood.. Cussing WILL be involved.... Stay tuned...
October 19, 20223 yr Author Ok...there is a scene in the Movie "The Longest Day" where the British Beachmaster comes upon a stalled Bren Carrier...and informs the soldiers to get it off of HIS Beach! "It won't start, Sir" "Hmmm, my grandmother used to say, anything mechanical, give it a GOOD BASH" And he thumps the hood of the Bren Carrier with his walking club...and the bloody thing starts right up..to everybody's surprise.... Well, Yesterday...I took assembly #1 apart...went all over the 4 panels...widened the rebates, thinned the edges of the bevels..try again...with a 24oz Ball Pean hammer at the ready...fit was just close enough, that I could brush on a bit of glue.. Seems one of the stiles had a slight curve to it...HAD..3/4" Pipe Clamp got things straightened out..was able to set this aside.. And start on the other frame....test fits...was having trouble keep things upright, so.. Where I could test fit the panels...couple needed an "adjustment" was finally able to dry fit the entire mess.. Too many gaps...take it back apart, Junior Jack and the Ward's 78 to correct the fit of each panel....again... F style clamps too wimpy? We have ways...let this dry fit sit overnight....one glue-up was more than enough ..."Fun" Today? Glued up the second assembly..was in just the right mood for it's worst...I WILL prevail! Camera tried to lock up...even hop off of the tripod...fine, go over there, and sit on a shelf, until your little tantrum is done... Assembly didn't want to come apart after the clamps came off...Ok...how about a "Good BASH"? Surprise...then I could go about adding glue on all the joints..and bash things back together...Was a tad out of square? Ooops, dropped that corner down onto the floor..NOW things are square. Large pipe clamp on the tablesaw..start to assemble things..a second large one was tucked under the other end... Until the joints closed up tightly...add a 3rd one in the middle, but on top of the mess... And 2 F style clamps in-between....all closed up...then have to move this heavy mess OFF of my tablesaw...and set it aside with the other one.. Where it can sit a day or two... needed the tablesaw back, had a lot of webframe parts to rip to width... Stay tuned..
