Been a while gents, started my new job and it has been a crazy ride.  I am learning more about data science than I expected and it is a STEEP learning curve so I haven’t had a lot of time lately to get out and make any sawdust…. until today…

My current project is a left handed split top rubou workbench made out of Beech and I had some time today so I was able to lay out everything and rough cut all the parts for the base pieces.  The wood has minimal moisture and has been in the shop for a couple weeks so I don’t expect a lot of movement but I will wait a couple days to mill to size.

I am still trying to decide a few things about the build like whether I want to do traditional square dogs or if I just want to say screw it and use round dogs for the whole thing.  One way is certainly easier only requiring that holes be drilled, but the traditional square bench dogs are definitely cooler IMHO.

Either way, this thing is going to be a massive, heavy beast of a workbench that will last pretty much forever.

Its going to take right about 150bf so if I am doing the maths right thats right at 12.5 cubic feet which puts us just north of 500lbs for the bench.  That should stay put pretty well :)

I don't think I told this story here if I did skip down to the break.

The other night around 3:00 I heard my bucket of peanuts get tipped other out in the shed. Shining a weak flashlight out of the window I could see a Big Black Bear Butt. I ran downstairs grabbed a pan and headed out the door. On the way to the, I picked up a new bundle of Solar String Lights that were still flashing. I turned on the lights of the barn and threw the pan across the concrete floor and out the door on the other, of the barn. He was startled but kept eating the peanuts. I grabbed the Table Saw and rolled it up to the open door as a defense measure and start throwing lumber at him. Now I have his attention, BUT I couldn't see because I forgot to bring a flashlight.

Back to the house.

I returned and started throwing more wood at it from behind the table saw. It didn't like that and with the very bright flashlight, it started to run down the hill into my neighbor's backyard.

All the bird food is now in a more secure location.

So this morning I let the dog out and as I stepped out the door I look at another neighbor's house across the street and there is a huge Black Bear, one of the biggest I've seen in the wild, his's eat bird seed from a can my neighbor left out.
I grabbed the dog and ran him in the house and grabbed my camera, but missed the shot.

A little later I'm on the back porch looking down feeding chipmunks from my hand when I heard a noise. I looked up the bear is about 15' away coming towards me. I stood up and yelled at him, he turned around and headed out to the woods.

All feeders, cleaned out, seed put away, neighbor says he'll put his can in the house. neighborhood notified.

He is a healthy/great looking bear

You DIDN'T insult your doctor!?!? :PullingHair:

Nope. He denied it, but tried to poison me with the steroid shot (celestone???sp) to stop the spread which was getting to my eyes, nose and mouth. Had a bad, bad reaction...dropped like a bag of dirt while writing the check for the visit...chin hit the counter before I collapsed in the corner...don't remember much after that...next thing I know I'm back into the exam room getting stitches, which by the way had to pay for too. I stay away from poison ivy, oak, sumac and Celestone. My chin appreciates the courtesy.

And a smart one too I would say :)  being able to use a flashlight and all.  "Not your average bear" :P

Get some pics up for us!

Jealous I am!  My 'bench' scoots south with only the Handyman. And the 14"? It hops!

Planing, scraping, a walk along the creek, shopping. TS to turn scraps into crafting lumber. Making a few give-away trays for farm market vendors and their kids.

This is the 'diagonal' after dusk TS trimming and dawn planing. Well better than 2 x 5 it is.

Beginning to suspect that. Seems to be a fairly common failure on this series GM products.

Been a busy night / day.  A while back I was gifted a 6” delta rockwell joiner that had seen better days.

Knowing my little benchtop joiner isn’t exactly up to the task of dealing with boards much over 4’ without all kinds of infeed/outfeed shenanigans I spent some time on getting the big joiner running correctly.

Took the whole thing apart, cleaned and lubed everything, waxed all the surfaces, set up the outfeed table correctly, set the blades correctly, set up the fence correctly and tuned it up on some scrap.  With all that done it works pretty well.

So this afternoon, I was able to get all the legs done and glued up for this insane workbench project :)

How many clamps do you need?  All of them…

Yep. The diagnosis is the switch. After everything else is exhausted. The dash has to come apart.

I am seriously considering upgrading this to a spiral cutter head.
