Happy Star Wars Day!

Our Patriot Turners-

@RustyFN wins First Place this week for the most turning posts! First, he showed us a picture of one of his rough turned bowl blanks. This one had a pretty serious defect and Rusty was wondering if he should just pitch discard it,

Several of our turners had suggestions on salvaging/redesigning. Check out Rusty's post and see if you can offer some suggestions.

Next, he posted a turned a pen.

He tells us about the species he used-

And finally, a beautiful finished bowl-

Rusty mentioned how severely some of his bowl blanks warped. Several members offered suggestions on salvaging the blanks. What do you do to your warped blanks to avoid using them for firewood?

@Gerald showed us some pictures of some previously finished platters. Gerald's turnings are always spectacular!

Check out his post for more images and explanations on the finish-

For The Newbies-

Here's something from Mike Peace about creating bowl blanks. Mike reminds us to turn the pith out!

Carl Jacobson turned some really neat bottle stoppers. He uses the metal stopper from Ruth Niles and quite a unique material for the top.

Carl give the source of the material on the YouTube page.

Last week, Alan Stratton showed us how to make flowers. Those flowers were part wood working, part turning. This week he shows us how to create "fuzzy" flowers on the lathe-

Rust made his pen from wood. Craft Supplies USA has some new acrylic pen blanks available.

Everything Else-

Rick Turns list of YouTube woodturning videos from last week-

Been trying to create a new design for some kitchen turnings. The stuff I made many years ago is pretty worn from use. This was the original design

Picture55.jpg.8e2e39e5246cc0e3fdfb278ade2a4c90.jpg

I thought it would be neat to have something that incorporated the Celtic knot. I saw a video by Alan Stratton on how he added the knot to his segmented turnings with the use of a shop made jig. From his ideas, I created an adjustable jig for my use.

Alan started with already rounded blanks but for my use, square blanks worked better.

I still need to perfect the centering of the knot on the blank but the concept works. Next is going to be a new pepper grinder to add to the salt cellar and sugar bowl.

Safe turning

Thanks for the mention Lew. I think you could improve on an already great design by adding some curve.

Thanks Lew.  Enjoyed the yarn bowl video.

@Gerald Thank You! The curves were the first things I considered as the previous versions all were like that. These seem a little more “modern”, may go back.

@HandyDan Thanks!
