The Pantry

The HVAC and repiping are done and I won’t have much to do with the roofing so she gave me the next project. The pantry is in dire need before the shelving collapses and hopefully a fairly quick project. It will involve a lot of maple for the components with 3/8” mahogany edge banding. Lots of pullout shelves and lazy susans. I snagged the maple two days ago but will still need two sheets of 1/2” ply for the bottoms of the pullout shelving and three sheets of 1/4” ply for the backing. The hardware is a lot of drawer slides and lazy Susan bearings. I included pictures of the existing pantry.

With all the stuff going on around here the pantry is moving slowly. I managed to get the sanding of everything done and all 300 pegs glued in on Sat and then yesterday put the first coat of finish on

  • Going to be a nice upgrade, Paul!   One note, from experience with built in Lazy Susan storage, if something falls off (and it will) it always lands at the farthest back corner.

You’re right about that Lew. I make my lazy Susan’s using Shaker pegs on the perimeter spaced about 2-2 1/2” apart. They look great and also give your fingers something to grab.  Paul

Paul, from some of the posts I've read drawer slides are a little hard to find right now...at least certain types. Better make sure you have the needed hardware located before any demo. But it will be nice once you get it done!

A quick Google search shows lowes, HD, Ace and several local woodworker supply stores have nearly any type, style, size and, brand you want, on hand. Of course, that's  in Tucson. But, that's just a few hours from Vegas.:D

A little work done today. Glued up two of the vertical panels. These panels are heavy so I will be doing all the rabbeting and dadoes with a router.

The last two days I’ve been trying to get the horizontal shelving for the lazy Susan’s done. Kind of tedious but they are coming out fine. Next will laminating up the blanks for actual lazy Susan’s which is pretty much the same process.

Got a fair amount done today in the shop. Still working on prepping all the components for the carcass. They have all been run through the planer and now it’s down to sanding and routing. I will hopefully have them ready for assembly Friday.

Today I got some time in on the pantry. I started cutting out and sanding the lazy Susan’s. One of the difficult parts of making them is getting the edges sanded. I decided to mount them on the lathe to try and make it a little easier and quicker and it worked very well. Most of the time is spent using the Shaper Origin to do the cut out and the holes for the pegs.

Busy day in the shop. All the lazy Susan’s are cut, sanded and ready to glue the pegs in. That won’t happen until right before the installation. To hard to store with the pegs in. The bases are also cut and sanded. Hopefully tomorrow I can begin assembling the carcasses.

We managed to get two of the carcasses together. We will finish up tomorrow. It’s warming up here. 90 today. The roof is still underway. They have the felt down so they are slated to begin laying the tile on Tuesday.
