April 2, 20224 yr Popular Post Hauled the last of the Ash planks to the shop...took 2 trips...to get the 4 boards downstairs, and laid out on the tablesaw's top...2 planks were selected to provide the blanks for the top of a table..the other 2.... Will be for legs, and aprons...These 4 boards average 7/8" x 5-1/2" x 6'5" long Can't use the tablesaw to cut the blanks for the top panel...we have "other" ways.. Disston D-100, 26" long, 7ppi...Cardio Workout, anyone? Length of the 4 blanks is 33"....the 4 blanks would make a panel 22-1/2"....until I can mill them down a bit....wavy edges, tapered....one end would be 5-1/2" wide, the other would be 6" wide.. Something like this. have the four blanks clamped together, to let them get used to each other.... These were saw at the bench....was a bit rough to do....working on a 5' long bench...cutting up 6'5" boards Wound up clamping the plank across the width of the bench, down by the vise... I did have about 18 photos...somehow, in the processing..the computer deleted them all..even the Camera's card That "file" does NOT exist, now? Had to go back to the shop, and take these 4 new pictures.. There is a Plant stand, made of a bunch of sticks....that sits in the front window.....cats on Squirrel/Bird Patrol keep knocking it over, spilling planters everywhere...this table is replace that stand.... Well it IS a start..stay tuned

April 3, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Ok...might have a case of Gremlins in the Photo Section in my computer....That MIA File? Has returned as if nothing happened Went to the shop this evening ( had a hard time coming back up the stairs, though) and went to process the new photos....and there was the missing file, with ALL it's photosHmm...had to finish editing a few, that did not get done last time...plus the "new" photos...Bushed.. Okay, see how it goes THIS time...these are the 4 planks I had to carry to the shop.. About 6'5" tall... Plopped down on the tablesaw..Handsome Devils, ain't they? Tried to lay one on the bench.. A tad bit long? Managed to get a bad end sawn off.. And the first of 4 blanks for a table top.. 33" long..7ppi does cut fast, but a tad rough...Started clamping across the vise, seemed to saw better...used this one to layout the next cut made 2 cuts, as both ends were a bit ugly...set the 1st blank down on the best section left.. Cutting my way through the 2 better looking planks...gave me 4 pieces to mill into a table top Still trying to get a decent pattern with all the grain. Tonight's little trip? I wanted the top of the tablesaw cleared..as this will be the next task.. Fence is about 5-1/2" away from the blade...as a start..as I am a bit too wide.. Need to narrow things down...18-20" width, maybe? Cut a few loose, split ends.. So, how good does this saw(yer) follow a saw line? Not too shabby? Checked with the square.. Splitting the lines BTW...made a bit of sawdust, today... There are now enough blanks to mill a top, 4 legs.. And enough for some aprons, too.. Long aprons by splitting that bottom board,,then short aprons from the other 2... There was a section best described as...TRASH... Connect the dots...looked even worse on the other face.. MIGHT rip a stretch out for and end apron.. Stay tuned
April 4, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Laundry Detail this evening...means a trip to the basement...might as well do a wee bit of work.. This time, with the tablesaw....have a few edges to straighten out.. And this wasn't the worst one...Set and reset the rip fence..3 passes..best edge against the fence at 5-1/2" width..one barely got cut...next, set to 5" even, place the just ripped edge against the fence, and try to keep the board against the fence on the way through...meh..reset to 4-3/4" run the first edge through...then stack the 4 blanks together for a bit.. There are 4 blanks for legs to be ripped down,,, Each board yields 2 blanks and a skinnier blank for later Trying to match the grain by just folding the pairs over... Laid out the 4 blanks for the top, again... Trying for a decent grain match up...will know more once the Stanley No.8c gets done with these edges....Just MIGHT need a bit of help, when glue-up comes around...one end IS a bit busy.. Thinking about a 1-1/2" wide bread board end? There was a couple glue-ups done tonight.. First one...the second was while I went back down to take clothes out of the washer, and into the dryer...I even used a roller to spread out the glue... Legs..1-3/4" x 1-3/4" x 20"...with taper the 2 "inside" faces....Mortise & Tenon to connect them to the aprons... May draw a BIG "V" across the blanks for the top...to keep them in order...and stack them back up...waiting on the Dryer to get done, right now.. Stay tuned..
April 5, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Was only going to the shop to take a photo..or two..was NOT intending that any actual WORK was going to be done... (Famous Last Words..) Anyway..the photo I was going to take.. Somewhere, under there, is my tablesaw...4 leg blanks, waiting on their turn... Had a choice tonight, of which plane to use... Somehow..No. 8 won out over #81.. Shavings? Hmmm I did haul a fancy straightedge to the shop, Showing it has a high spot on both ends. Gap in the center...make a few more shavings... Getting to be work..to get 2 edges to match.. No gap...top board has a slight bow to it, is all.....nothing holding it there...slight "spring" joint... That was as far as I got...although.. From the looks of these other 2 boards..still a lot to do..before any glue,clamps or cauls get used.. This stack is just sitting there...not even braced up.. Just don't sneeze... 2 edges done..will see about the other 4...some other day... Old Heft & Hubris, Stanley No.8c,type 19..I think...10 pounds to push around. Stay tuned....cussing is about to begin..
April 6, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Just could not get back to sleep, after that 0300 "P Call!" So..... Jointed both edges of Board #4...then worked over Board #5..until.. I get a single shaving the length of the board....then...glue..clamps..and cauls... Trying to decide which face will be the show face... New lights in the shop...no longer a dimly lit Dungeon.. I did forget to turn the shop fan on....so, now I am soaked...might have done a bit of work....from 0500 to 0615Hrs...maybe I can get a nap in, before Lunch? Stay tuned..

April 6, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Changed out the T-8 florescent bulbs to the new T-8 LED.. plus hung a brand new 5500 Lum. LED over the Drill Press....48" 2 bulb, from Harbor Freight. Almost need sunglasses down there, now.. Need to change out a sanding belt....leg blanks have glue lines to clean up....BEFORE a plane can be used.. Edited April 6, 20224 yr by steven newman

April 6, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Got 2 naps in...had to take the Boss to Wal E World... Legs are 4-squared.. Measured down from the "top" 5"...make a mark Down at the foot, 1" from the otherside..connect the two dots.. Long straightedge helps...then over to the "Tapering machine".. Saw the line....then beltsand the saw marks...will hand plane smooth when the bench is clear... Awaiting the plane....slat to show off the tapers...and that will do, for today.. April 7, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Ok, in order to clear the bench, need to clear a spot to sit the table top at. Still had a chore for the tablesaw.. Needed to mill the 4 aprons, first...Clamped so that they will stay straight...for a while...move these off of the saw. Remove all the big clamps..leave the cauls on the ends...and then haul this thing away.. To where it can just sit...out of my way. The "B" side? Going to be "fun" flattening this thing.... Back to the bench...teamwork was needed... Leg tapers needed planed smooth.. Making shavings..Teamwork? well the flats needed a bit of work, too.. So...both planes got a workout.. 4 legs, plane all 4 sides of each leg...whew.. Thought I could set up the Stanley 45 as a bead cutter...even had a chunk of scrap to test the set up... Has one too many "Quirks" made doing a leg a bit..rough....problem was centered on that fence.. Lowered the fence...moved it in to cover the outside quirk...backed the cutter off for a lighter cut..start at the far end, and work back towards this end. Might just work....maybe later today, I'll try again...resting up the right leg, and cooling me off...had worked up a sweat in the shop Stay tuned...still doing leg work

April 8, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Once I got the Stanley 45 set up RIGHT.. Takes 2 "passes" to form that bead...compare to the first attempt.. The top right one....which will be on the back of the table, now Legs done...aprons next.. Reset the fence, as I needed just a single bead...test fit... Still have the longer aprons to do.. Had to reset the Mortise jig...as the legs are a bit too fat... Remove 2 screws, so one "jaw" is loose, clamp the clamp and the jaws in the vise, re-install screws in their new locations, and then flip over.. Jig gets secured to the bench, right over the bench's leg ( no bounce, that way) slide the part into the jig, and clamp the jaws tight. Mortise tools? That be a Mortise Marking gauge, set to the width of that 6mm Mortise chisel....that Gene Howe sent me. Trying to decide whether to do Tenons first, or mortises first....we'll see. Those double beads on the legs, looked better, after a hand sanding.. Resting the knee up...was a LONG day today..before I try any shop time...went "shopping" today.. $27 ...from 2 Antique stores...in Urbana, OH...... Stay tuned
April 8, 20224 yr Popular Post Table is progressing nicely. Great rescue on the "finds". Not much rehabbing for you though. Chisels a little spiffing, flatten the backs then fine tune the edge they'll be ready to go on the table. Knowing you, it's taken me longer to type this than get everything ready to work. Shoot, betting they're already done.
April 9, 20224 yr Author Popular Post A bit busy at the moment, to do any more rehabs....and sore. I managed to get maybe an hour IN the shop, this evening..... Long Aprons needed a bead... To match the short aprons. Then the show edges were jointed/planed... Trying to blend the bottom edge and the beads into one curve.. Hmm, just a little bit more....then do the short aprons the same way....noticed a problem with the shortys one end was nasty looking, not even close to square, in any direction...we have ways.. Nice Cardio Workout....other end was fine...cut the other apron to match this one... Laid out for tenons on the short aprons....needed to made the shoulder cuts...where else.. Then back to the bench...wide chisel to try to pop the waste off... Clipped both ends...and this will be the tenon...2 done, 6 to go...then chop 8 mortises to match.. Stay tuned...Hope I can just hide out Saturday afternoon....IN the shop
April 9, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Start time this morning..1100 hrs....quitting time was 1300 hrs.... First off, moved the table top to the bench...use the tablesaw to mill the rest of the tenons.. Then set up the jig.. And a few toys...clamp the first leg in place.. And chop out a mortise..until tenon fits.. Rotate the leg..and repeat for the other side of the corner... Dry fit? First corner is done..next.. Hadn't even touched this..yet. Good thing that is on the inside of the corner... Chop it out, anyway...more dry fits.. Ready to turn the corner with the other long apron..Diet Mountain Dew BREAK! Ok..4th mortise of the day. and yet another dry fit.. Turned the corner, long aprons and this short apron...4 mortises chopped.. That stick? will get dovetail on each end, once it is the right length...then fitted into a socket in the top of the long aprons a single 1/2 blind dovetail in the center....both to secure the center point of the top, and keep the long aprons straight.. ( more chopping ) Area between the shoulder blades was hurting, knee was protesting...time to stop for the day...not too bad, for 2 hour's work?
