When the weather breaks in 6 months or so, I'll envoke my Six Sigma training to steal shamelessly the design for my two "79" refugees once they get prettied up. Right now they're wrapped in blankets trying to keep warm. Like yours, I have one depth stop & fence between the two.

December 1, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Or..shelves... Between errands and honey-dos....did not get to the shop until late, today....about 1540 hrs...then the battery for the camera quit about 1710hrs....so did shop time....still..about 90 minutes to get SOMETHING done...maybe? Goal today was to get some hinges installed...involved a chisel.. For some strange reason..I started with the lid...marked where the hinges will go, 3 taps on the chisel to set the depth..then peel the waste off... Pilot drill and a ratcheting screwdriver to install...repeat for the box.. Once the lid was "hinged".. Next..a latch was dug out of the spares box...had to find 2 matching latches, one for this box, one for Box No.2... Then see IF it will indeed latch.. I also wanted to at least plug a few holes, mainly in the lid's corners.. Had a strip of Ash about the right size...cut for length, and installed.. May do the sawdust and glue to fill in that little hole,,,holes at the bottom corners of the box...intend to get some Brass Corner plates, to also protect the corners.. Sharp corners have a slight round-over, everything been sanded to 220 grit, for now....will wait on Box No.2 to get this far, before seeing about a finish... Stay tuned..
December 2, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Camera battery now charged back up...a better view of that closed case.. I stopped off at Menard's on the way back home...and bought a couple of sets of Brass trim for the bottom corners...maybe dress it up a bit? I did try that Bishop No. 10 saw out... took 8 full strokes to go 1/2" down...and.. There is no fuzz where the blade comes through....unlike the fuzzies left by Disston No. 4..... Square for scale reference ...this is the strip of Ash I used to make plugs with...with one laying there... Both of these are Stanley made. Both have the SW markings. I was a bit off, when I called that marking gauge a No. 68......(put yer glasses on, Roy!) Seems it is actually a No. 65.....a Stanley No. 68 has a broom handle, and is a "Gent's saw" May see about a little shoptime, Thursday? We'll see....too tired today... Stay tuned.. December 3, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Better picture of the Box No.1... That will be getting some Brass.. In fact, both boxes will get these on the bottom corners.... Those pins I sawed the other day? Well, the board was clamped down, outside face up... Baseline has a "Knife Wall" made...and ready to chop about half way down..then flip this over,, And, get the inside chopped...Usual Suspects for the chopping... Next, stand the pin board up, inside facing the inside of the tail board,,,sharp pencil to trace around the pins.. Finish the layouts by marking the waste areas... Bandsaw does a much better job at these, than I do...DAMHIKT Remove the waste. I tried to saw on the waste side of the lines, leaving as much of the line as I can...then a dry fit... Don't worry, those pencil marks will sand right off... Rinse and repeat, to get corner #2 done... Along the way, noticed the label on the end board,,,and..it will NOT pull off....we have ways aka Stanley No. 70, shipping label scraper...this is the job it was designed for..so.. No problem... Spent 90 minutes IN the shop..had Honey-do items to also get done, according to the Boss...I did get a couple clamps pre-set.. Nice to have these ready..when glue-up time gets here...2 done, two more corners to go.. Stay tuned..
December 3, 20214 yr Popular Post So how are going to decide which 3720 gets the finger joint box and which gets the dovetail box. Asking for a friend.

December 4, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Corners #3 and #4 were done Friday....timed the corner work.....a Finger joint takes about 15 minutes to complete a corner....the Dovetailed corner takes about 45 minutes...I'm getting slow in me old age.. Starting to look like a box? may work on a bottom for it? Laid the plywood panel in place, nicely centered...trace around it, and then used a combo square to even the lines out a bit Time to get a plane out...so it can help build it's new home.. Reset the fence to what I need...used the leg vise to hold things still, long enough.. First pass, showed the vise needed a "helper"...then proceeded to make a few "curlies"... Then check to see how deep I needed to go...using that plywood panel... That should do it? Then, do the other three? Long sides weren't as wide as the ends, reset the fence, again..then see how all 4 turned out.. Have a plan for those exit holes.. Does the plywood fit, once the case is clamped up tight? This IS the bottom, after all. can adjust to close the gaps on the ends. flip this mess over..and see how much I need to trim the pine panel...allowing to fit in the grooves, too.. Marked out...Tablesaw to do the cuts.... Now, about them holes in the bottom corners... Twould be hard to fill with a plug? We have ways.. Uses 3 screws..set of 4. Bought a set for each box.. One TINY screw on each side of the corner, and then one up into the plywood bottom...kind of dresses things up a bit? Leg Vise: LONG ago, I rived a 2 x 6 slab from a 6 x 6 Sycamore beam....had an older pipe clamp I could also use...original bench is long gone ( friend of mine uses it for his Atlas Lathe) but, I kept the leg vise...for the "new" bench... ) Have even replaced that pipe clamp once (worn out the first one..) Old leather nail pouch to line the jaw...might replace that, someday? End vise is a Craftsman, with added Oak jaws.. About that Marking gauge? Seems the marking head was on backwards?...and the cutter was kind of dull..fixed both... This is how the Stanley No. 65 SW is supposed to look like..BTW, there is a small screw in the beam..that prevents the head from sliding off the other end...removed that, and the head can slide right of, get turned around, and reset....Small flat needle file to sharpen the cutter... Start time yesterday at 1030 hrs...area between the shoulder blades said quitting time at 1345 hrs...longest stretch of shoptime since... Maybe later today...I can plough some grooves? Then rebate around the Pine panel so it can fit those grooves? Stay tuned..

December 5, 20214 yr Author Popular Post 2-1/2 hours in the shop, today...panel for the lid needed to be a bit flatter.. We have ways, Millers Falls No. 9, Type 4...made a mess on the floor... That I had to sweep up, BEFORE I could go to the next task.. Setting up to plough some grooves...Stanley No. 45, Type 20 ( SW, Made in Canada)#12cutter The shorter ends were done first...forgot to double check for depth...fixed that on the longer sides.. later, I had to come back and re-cut one groove.. first inch or so of this groove was too shallow..ran the 45 until it was fixed, and the panel sat better.. Grooves done..time for more rebates..once I finally figured out what size to make them.. AND, which face to make them on...That be the Ward's/Stanley No. 78..as at least it's spur can be used. Was supposed to LEAVE that line... Just getting the two end grain rebates done,...took a few other planes...test fit going on..and was where I found out that one groove wasn't deep enough... Got everything fitted up...Happened to remember to mark on the OUTSIDE of the bax, WHERE to saw to split off the lid...then time for cauls clamps, a brush and the glue bottle.. Since the plywood bottom panel get glued in place, is the reason for some of that Forest of Clamps.. Let this sit a day..before I try to remove them clamps.. Stay tuned..
December 5, 20214 yr Popular Post Coming along nicely. With all this work (& clamps) needed to house two duplex planes, I may just buy a new pair of tennis shoes and keep mine in the box the shoes came in
